Chapter 125: Giving a Rabbit
The two children were very enthusiastic and chattered away, eagerly explaining things to her.
"I'm not lying, it's true! This is all what my mom told me. If you see Wu Da in the village from now on, you absolutely must avoid him. Don't provoke him, or he'll get angry and beat you up, whether you're a child or an adult!"
Zhao Zhitong listened in astonishment. The other child eagerly added, "Wu Da is really a crazy person, and a bad one at that! He spends all day doing nothing productive, just fighting, causing trouble, and engaging in petty theft around the village. He even angered his own father to death! After that, he ran away from home and didn't even attend his father's funeral."
"He's also terribly unfilial to his mother. His mother was so good to him; she always protected him whenever his father beat him. But not only does he not take care of her, he even badmouths her to others. In the end, the Wu Family removed his name from their ancestral records and kicked him out. Now he lives all alone in that dilapidated hut by the burial mounds at the foot of the mountain. See? That broken bamboo house over there, surrounded by graves. It's so gloomy and terrifying!"
As they spoke, the two children shuddered, as if genuinely frightened by the thought.
Just as their excited chatter reached a peak, footsteps sounded from behind. Turning, they saw it was Wu Da; he had returned.
Unlike before, he now carried a wild deer slung over his shoulder and held two wild rabbits in his hand.
Despite the load, Wu Da walked effortlessly, reaching them in just a few strides.
The two children who had just been badmouthing Wu Da turned pale with fright. They quickly lowered their heads and huddled by the roadside.
Zhao Ya and Zhao Cheng were also terrified, pulling Zhao Zhitong towards the side of the road with them.
Only Zhao Zhitong remained completely unafraid. In fact, she stared intently at Wu Da—or rather, at the game he carried.
She had never seen a hunter return with their quarry before, and the sight of someone carrying a deer and two wild rabbits was utterly fascinating to her.
Wu Da had been walking down the mountain looking straight ahead, his face expressionless. But as he passed the children, he sensed a pair of eyes on him.
It was primarily Zhao Zhitong's gaze, so intense it was hard to ignore.
He glanced over and saw a fair-skinned young girl with large, dark, sparkling eyes fixed not on him, but on the game in his hands.
Her eyes possessed an extraordinary clarity, a limpidness he had never encountered, making him pause involuntarily.
When Zhao Zhitong saw him look her way, she offered him a bright smile.
It had been years since anyone had smiled at him. Startled, Wu Da subconsciously opened his mouth, "You..."
His voice, likely rough from disuse, was low and raspy, grating on the ears.
The two village children, already guilt-ridden for speaking ill of him, grew even more frightened when Wu Da stopped. Hearing him actually speak, they shrieked and fled down the mountain as if for their lives.
Their baskets, filled to the brim with wild berries, overturned as they ran. RATTLE! Fruit scattered everywhere. They paid no heed, focused only on their mad dash downhill.
Zhao Cheng and Zhao Ya were also badly frightened.
Zhao Cheng wanted to pull his two sisters away, but his feet felt as if they were glued to the ground, too heavy to lift. All he could do was stare at Wu Da, on high alert.
Wu Da glanced at Zhao Cheng, then looked away, apparently deciding against speaking. He lifted his foot, ready to continue down the mountain.
Just then, Zhao Zhitong suddenly piped up, "Big Brother, did you catch these rabbits and this deer all by yourself?"
Her voice was clear, with a sweet, childish lilt that was very pleasant to hear.
Wu Da paused. He looked back at Zhao Zhitong and, seeing the young girl gazing with interest at the game in his hands, he nodded.
Zhao Zhitong blinked, then pointed at the rabbits in his hand. "Big Brother, are these rabbits for sale?"
She wanted to buy some meat for her mother and father; they had been working so hard lately.
Zhao Cheng, shocked by Zhao Zhitong's boldness, broke out in a cold sweat. Nevertheless, he bravely positioned himself in front of his sisters, ready to protect them should Wu Da suddenly turn violent.
But Wu Da didn't fly into a rage. He looked down at the rabbits in his hand for a moment, then suddenly moved towards them.
Zhao Cheng was so scared his heart leaped into his throat. He stared at Wu Da, stammering, "You... don't come any closer..."
Before he could finish speaking, he froze.
Wu Da hadn't attacked. Not only had he not attacked, but he was holding out one of the rabbits to Zhao Cheng. When Zhao Cheng, stunned, didn't take it, Wu Da placed the rabbit on the ground and said in his hoarse voice, "For you."
Then, he turned and walked briskly down the mountain. Zhao Zhitong called out, wanting to give him money, but he didn't stop.
It took Zhao Cheng and Zhao Ya a long moment to react. "Why... why did he give us a rabbit?" Zhao Cheng finally asked.
Naturally, no one answered his question. Zhao Zhitong had already squatted down to examine the rabbit.
After a moment, Zhao Cheng remembered to scold Zhao Zhitong. He put on a serious expression and said, "Little Sister, that was too dangerous just now! How could you talk to him? What if he really had flown into a rage?"
Zhao Zhitong blinked at Zhao Cheng. "Big Brother, those are just what other people say. Rumors like that are the least trustworthy. You should believe what you see with your own eyes, not what you hear with your ears. Tell me, did he fly into a rage and hit us just now?"
Zhao Cheng and Zhao Ya both shook their heads. It was true. Wu Da hadn't flown into a rage; he'd even given them a rabbit.
Zhao Zhitong shrugged. "See? Rumors aren't trustworthy, are they?"
Zhao Cheng nodded, feeling his sister had a point. But then, a sense that something wasn't quite right nagged at him. It wasn't until they started walking down the mountain that he realized what it was.
He immediately said to Zhao Zhitong, "Little Sister, you're too sly! I almost fell for it. Even if, as you say, rumors aren't trustworthy, the rumors *do* say he's very dangerous. How could you approach him so recklessly without first making sure he wasn't a threat? What if the rumors *were* true? You could have been hurt!"
Zhao Zhitong, who was delightedly examining the rabbit, heard this and grinned. "I just knew he wasn't a bad person."
Zhao Cheng didn't understand how Zhao Zhitong could be so certain. When he pressed her, she just giggled and wouldn't give a clear answer.
In the end, he could only shake his head helplessly. I'll have to watch her more closely in the future, he decided silently. Can't let her act so recklessly.
As for why Zhao Zhitong was so certain, it was because of what Grandpa Bai had told her. Grandpa Bai had said there was no malice in Wu Da's eyes. Furthermore, when Wu Da first passed them and noticed the children's fear, he had deliberately walked closer to the cliff edge and quickened his pace. This, Grandpa Bai explained, showed he wasn't a bad person. As for all those rumors, there must be a reason behind them, then, Zhao Zhitong mused.
