Chapter 29: Chapter 29: The Abyss Within
Kai's doppelgänger lunged, Rift energy crackling around him like a living storm. In the eerie void within the Titan's body, time seemed distorted. Kai barely had a moment to react before their swords clashed, sending waves of dark energy rippling through the abyss.
"You again?" Kai muttered, pushing back against his opponent's strength. "You've really got to find a new hobby."
The doppelgänger grinned. "And you have to stop resisting your true nature."
Kai gritted his teeth. He had no time for this. He needed to get to the Core, but his dark reflection stood in the way. Every time they fought, it felt as if the Rift itself was testing him, pushing him toward something he didn't understand yet.
The doppelgänger moved with unnatural speed, disappearing and reappearing behind Kai in a flash. A blade of shadow slashed at his side, narrowly missing as Kai twisted away. He countered with an explosive burst of energy, sending his opponent flying backward, but the clone merely landed gracefully, unfazed.
Kai wiped a trickle of sweat from his forehead. This isn't working. He was fighting himself. How could he win against something that mirrored his every move?
His mind raced. Think, think. He needed a way to turn this around.
Then, he saw it—the Core pulsed, sending another wave of Rift energy through the abyss. His opponent had flinched slightly, reacting to the same surge.
That's it.
Kai lunged forward again, but this time, he wasn't aiming for the clone. He dodged past him, racing toward the Core.
The doppelgänger's expression darkened. "No!"
Kai reached out, Rift energy surging through his hands, and grasped the Core's surface.
The Rift's Judgment
The moment Kai touched the Core, the abyss exploded in light. The energy around him twisted, unraveling, as if the very fabric of the Rift was being rewritten. He felt an overwhelming force pulling at his mind, flooding his senses with whispers, visions of alternate realities—different versions of himself.
One where he had embraced the Rift's power entirely, standing atop the ruins of a shattered world.
One where he had fallen, consumed by darkness, nothing more than a mindless entity lost within the void.
One where he had never fought at all—and watched everything he loved burn.
His breath caught. The Rift wasn't just trying to destroy him.
It was trying to reshape him.
The doppelgänger screamed in rage, his form beginning to unravel, merging with the Core itself. "You think you can fight fate?!"
Kai gritted his teeth. "No. But I can choose my own."
Gathering every ounce of energy left, he drove his sword into the Core, pouring his will into the strike. The Rift shattered, the abyss folding in on itself.
Return to Reality
With a gasp, Kai's body was expelled from the Titan, tumbling onto the battlefield. The massive creature let out a piercing wail, its Rift energy collapsing inward as it began to disintegrate.
Luna was the first to react. "Kai!"
She sprinted toward him, catching him before he hit the ground. Seraphina and Elias weren't far behind, their eyes wide as the Titan crumbled into dust, its form dissolving into the void above.
Kai groaned, his head spinning. "That... sucked."
Luna smirked. "You did it, idiot."
Seraphina exhaled in relief. "The Titan is gone. The Rift is… stable. For now."
Elias adjusted his glasses. "But for how long?"
Kai sat up, rubbing his temples. He knew one thing for certain.
This war was far from over.
