Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Going Public with Sylvia
Nathaniel Fu pulled her into his arms and closed his eyes.
The Next Morning
Nathaniel woke up and instinctively reached over to pull her into his arms for a few more minutes of sleep.
But his arms met only empty sheets.
Celia was gone.
His eyes snapped open, all drowsiness instantly gone. Why did she always get up so early?
Her scent lingered on the pillows and sheets. He realized—perhaps with a bit of alarm—that he had grown increasingly reliant on the subtle fragrance she left behind.
Just then, his phone chimed.
A message from Sylvia:"Good morning, hubby~ Did you sleep well last night?"
Nathaniel's lips curled slightly. He replied with two words:"Very well."
Another message followed:"I have something to ask you! Tomorrow is my dad's birthday, and the Su family is hosting a celebration. Will you come?"
Charles Su's birthday. If Nathaniel attended, it would be a public acknowledgment of his relationship with Sylvia.
Sylvia quickly sent another message:"Is it awkward for you? If it is, never mind. I'm just really happy right now and I want the world to know how lucky I am."
Nathaniel raised his brows and replied:"It's fine. I'll be there."
Meanwhile, Celia received a call from Sylvia.
"Celia, about the jade pendant—you want it back? Well, it's not with me. Two years ago, it was included in my dowry. It should be somewhere in the Fu household now."
Celia's heart sank.
The Fu family estate was enormous—how was she supposed to locate something so small?
How had the pendant even ended up there?
The situation was getting more complicated than she anticipated.
Later that day, Fu Yingying pulled Celia out for a shopping trip. As the two strolled through the mall, they unexpectedly ran into familiar faces: Sylvia and her best friend, Lisa Xuan.
"Well, well," Lisa said with a mocking laugh. "Look who it is—T University's infamous ugly duo. One has a birthmark, the other a scar. What a perfect pair."
Sylvia's crooked nose had mostly healed, and with recent success and attention boosting her confidence, her skin glowed with smug satisfaction.
"Lisa, don't be mean," Sylvia said, feigning kindness. "They already look like that, no need to make it worse."
"You're too soft, Sylvia," Lisa said admiringly. "A true angel."
Fu Yingying had kept her true identity hidden, which meant she'd endured more than her fair share of ridicule from Sylvia and Lisa. But not today.
"Ugh," Yingying said, pinching her nose. "Where's that awful smell coming from? Oh, right—it's from the 'kind-hearted fairy' who forgot to brush her teeth."
Sylvia's expression changed instantly. She took a step forward, glaring."Fu Yingying, you—"
But Celia stepped in front of Yingying, blocking Sylvia's path. Her clear gaze held a cool smile.
"Sylvia, let me give you a piece of advice: be more respectful to Yingying, or you'll regret it. She's Nathaniel Fu's favorite niece, after all."
Sylvia scoffed."Hah! Yingying? Nathaniel's niece? Please. She's not even worthy to shine my shoes."
Then she flipped her hair and proudly tilted her chin."Do you see what I'm wearing?"
Around her neck hung a dazzling blue diamond.
"This is the Polaris Star," Sylvia said, her voice dripping with pride. "A one-of-a-kind necklace worth hundreds of millions, gifted by my mysterious billionaire boyfriend."
These days, Sylvia was riding a wave of success. With the Polaris Star hanging on her neck, even her snobbish relatives had softened. Invitations from socialites and high society poured in.
She was the new darling of the elite.
"Celia, let me tell you this: at tomorrow's party, my boyfriend is going to make our relationship public in front of everyone. You'll see then what real love and status look like!"
