The Billionaire Unwanted Wife

Chapter 9: CHAPTER 9

Amari gave a small, composed smile and gently corrected him, "Ex-wife."

Even someone as calm and collected as Mr. Haskel was visibly taken aback. "Ex-wife?" he repeated, eyes narrowing in surprise.

Amari lifted her hand slightly, as if formally introducing herself. "Mr. Haskel, I am Luna. This is our first official meeting. I hope we can understand each other clearly moving forward."

Indeed, they had met several times before—back when she was known as Mrs. Clavel.

But this was the first time they were meeting as strangers, as professionals, with Amari standing in her true identity as Luna.

Mr. Haskel shook her hand with a measured smile. "Then tell me, Miss Luna… why did you and Mr. Clavel divorce?"

Before Amari could respond, Lea jumped in, her voice laced with irritation. "Well, let's just say that while he was eating from one plate, he was already eyeing another. Mr. Clavel couldn't keep his attention where it belonged, Miss Luna—"

"Lea…" Amari interrupted softly but firmly, signaling with her eyes to drop it. There was no need to bring their private life into this meeting.

Turning back to Mr. Haskel, Amari's tone shifted into something sharper and more composed. "Mr. Haskel, we both understand how critical this case is to Alexander's. This isn't a trivial matter. You may choose not to trust Amari, the ex-wife of Sebastian Clavel. But you cannot question Luna, the attorney. I have no reason to tarnish my own name, especially not for something as petty as personal revenge."

Mr. Haskel's expression darkened for a moment, as if weighing her words. But then, surprisingly, he let out a quiet chuckle.

"Well then," he said, leaning back in his chair, "Clavel has Attorney Lee on his side. And in my opinion, aside from Miss Luna here, no one else stands a chance against him."

Attorney Lee was known in legal circles as a legend. An undefeated powerhouse. Many lawyers feared going up against her, and for good reason. Some even referred to her as "the second Luna"—not knowing that the real Luna had been hiding in plain sight all along.

It was exactly for that reason that Mr. Haskel had made every effort to track Luna down and get her on his team.

And now here she was.

The timing may have been unexpected, but it couldn't have worked out better.

Lea smiled and nodded. "That's right. Even if Attorney Lee is one of the best, she's still human. When it comes to raw skill and instinct, only Luna can rival her. And honestly, with everything at stake in this case, there's no logical reason for Luna to be spying for Mr. Clavel. Why would she need to gather information from you when she already knows how he thinks?"

Mr. Haskel tilted his head slightly, as if mulling over the logic. He nodded slowly, showing partial agreement, but he didn't rush the conversation.

"You make a fair point," he said. "In that case, shall we… enjoy the meal first?"

With that, he motioned to the server to bring out the food and poured wine for the table, introducing each dish with an oddly polite air, as if they were all old friends gathering for dinner.

Amari didn't hesitate. She picked up her chopsticks with elegance and looked straight at Mr. Haskel. "Had I known you were this charming and hospitable, I might have invited you out myself earlier this morning."

Mr. Haskel laughed, amused by her boldness. "Back then, whenever I saw Miss Amari, she was always with someone else. There was never a chance—not even a sliver—for Mr. Clavel to be absent. But if I may ask… weren't you two in love? What made you suddenly decide on a divorce?"

He picked up his wine glass and smiled playfully. "Would you care for a drink, Miss Luna?"

Amari shook her head gently, her smile never fading. "No, thank you. Drinking isn't great for one's health. Besides, I heard Mr. Haskel doesn't have the best stomach either. Let's focus on eating instead."

Mr. Haskel chuckled. "I didn't expect you to be so concerned about me, Miss Luna—and I'm surprised you know about my sensitive stomach."

Amari paused for just a second, her hand still on her chopsticks, but she didn't respond. She simply gave a cool, elegant smile and resumed eating.

She didn't eat too fast, nor did she linger—her movements were graceful, measured, and quietly dignified.

Mr. Haskel, on the other hand, ate like a nobleman—slowly, with deliberate motions. Every gesture of his exuded the refined grace of someone who'd grown up surrounded by privilege.

Lea, however, could hardly focus on the food. She kept glancing at Mr. Haskel nervously, trying to read his face. Was he really convinced? Was he still suspicious?

Finally, after Amari set her chopsticks down, Mr. Haskel looked her in the eyes and said, "This is the first time I've had a meal with Miss Luna… and I must admit, I'm surprised."

Amari gave a composed smile. "No need to worry. I'm sure President Haskel will have plenty more surprises in the future."

He raised an eyebrow at that, his curiosity clearly piqued. "I'll be looking forward to them."

Lea cleared her throat and took the opportunity to shift gears. "Well then… now that we've eaten, may we finally discuss the real purpose of this meeting?"

Amari turned to Mr. Haskel, her expression calm and businesslike. "I've reviewed the details of the case thoroughly. I'm satisfied with the compensation and benefits you're offering should we win. I believe everything is acceptable, and there's nothing more to negotiate—except for one additional condition."
