Chapter 44: The Phantom Worm Spirit
The Bullhorn Mountain Secret Realm was undoubtedly beautiful, so much so that it felt like a sightseeing trip—a refreshing and pleasing journey.
However, Kent was fully aware that this was a secret realm trial, not a leisurely tour.
Sure enough, once all the students from Saint Stone High entered, Mr. Eight God instructed everyone to take a break.
Twenty minutes later, the ten mentors each led their teams toward Bullhorn Mountain.
Along the way, Mr. Eight God said, "The dangerous native beasts in this alternate space have mostly been cleared, so even for you, it shouldn't be too hazardous. But we must still stay vigilant, as even software can have flaws. What was cleared by humans doesn't guarantee all dangers are eliminated."
"Our trial goal this time is to capture a small native beast called the Phantom Worm Spirit. You all must have heard of it."
Kent and the others nodded. The Phantom Worm Spirit was a specialty native beast of the Bullhorn Mountain Secret Realm. Before coming here, everyone had searched for information. This creature wasn't very large or high-level, about the size of an arm, usually at level 10 or so, with a maximum level of 20. It primarily fed on plant leaves, possessed intelligence, moved quickly, could climb trees, burrow, swim, and even had jumping abilities. It would still be quite challenging to capture for students like them.
The Phantom Worm Spirit was valuable both for breeding and medicinal purposes. It was a key ingredient in some high-level potions. A single one could sell for 100 credit points, and if it came from the Bullhorn Mountain Secret Realm, it could fetch up to 300 credit points.
Of course, if it were dead, its vitality would be lost, significantly reducing its value, and it might not be purchased at all.
At this point, a student asked, "Mentor, will the Phantom Worm Spirits we catch belong to us?"
Several of the common-born students immediately perked up at the thought, since this could be quite a profitable venture.
Mr. Eight God shook his head and said, "The Bullhorn Mountain Secret Realm belongs to a four-star inspector. It wasn't open to the public in the past, but this year, they unexpectedly allowed us to use it, and only for this year. As you can see, this place is quite suitable for your trials—it's not too dangerous and offers an opportunity to test your skills. The scenery is also quite nice; you could consider it a bit of a vacation."
"Our school has borrowed this realm for free. We cannot let you all take the Phantom Worm Spirits for nothing. Fortunately, that four-star inspector is very generous. They will buy back any Phantom Worm Spirits you catch for 150 credit points each. I hope you all value this opportunity and don't entertain any unnecessary thoughts."
Upon hearing this, most students smiled, finding the four-star inspector to be quite benevolent.
As for the identity of the four-star inspector, it wasn't something they cared much about; their social standings were too far apart for them to even consider it. The inspector was a figure they could only look up to.
Kent felt something vaguely familiar about the term "four-star inspector"—he thought he had heard it before, but couldn't recall where or when.
Zhao Mengxi, however, had a sudden realization. She glanced at Kent, who looked puzzled, and couldn't help but smile lightly.
After walking for about ten minutes, they finally reached Jade River, a clear river that wrapped around Bullhorn Mountain. The river was about three meters wide, with calm waters reflecting the sky's bright colors, creating a spectacular view.
In the river, small eight-legged turtlefish swam leisurely.
Above the river, there was a suspension bridge made of iron chains, two meters wide, with several iron chains suspended in midair. Walking across it caused the bridge to sway slightly.
Crossing the bridge marked the official entry into the foothills of the mountain. The upper half of Bullhorn Mountain was covered in snow, while the lower half was dense with forest. There were no clear paths, only small trails left by native beasts.
Following one of these trails, the group ventured into the mountain. It didn't take long before they spotted a Phantom Worm Spirit darting away swiftly from a tree branch, vanishing in the blink of an eye.
Indeed, it was a cunning creature, making it difficult to catch.
After traveling for about half an hour, they reached a flat area.
Mr. Eight God scanned the surroundings and said, "We'll set up camp here today. You can freely form teams to carry out the trial. Remember not to stray too far, and if you encounter danger, signal immediately with a flare."
The group immediately chose their preferred spots and began setting up tents.
Kent selected a spot with a good view of the sky. Just then, Zhao Mengxi approached with a light laugh. "I knew you could set up tents. Help me out, will you?"
Kent rolled his eyes in exasperation. "So you're getting close to me just to make me work? Nice plan. Alright, it'll cost you 100 credit points per time."
"You're really asking for too much. The total cost of this tent is no more than 500 credit points," Zhao Mengxi pretended to be angry.
"I'm totally overcharging you. What are you going to do about it?" Kent laughed. "You're all spoiled, not used to working with your hands, so you come to me to buy service."
"Oh... So you're selling your help." Zhao Mengxi chuckled, covering her mouth.
"Come on... What do you mean 'selling'? Your mind's all twisted." Kent laughed in return.
While bickering, they quickly set up two tents. After a short rest, they prepared to set out.
The goal of this trial was to catch as many Phantom Worm Spirits as possible. The results would be ranked, and there was an incentive. It was said that high-ranking students could have their achievements listed on their applications, potentially boosting their chances of being selected by their first-choice university.
Mr. Eight God watched as the students formed their teams and left. He sat on a tree branch near the camp, taking out his phone to watch a downloaded video, enjoying a rare moment of leisure. Normally, leading a group was much more exhausting, but this time it was much easier.
Kent and Zhao Mengxi were both confident in their abilities, so they decided to act alone, each accompanied by their summoned beasts.
Kent chose a direction and set off with Wukong. Although Wukong was only level 10, it was incredibly nimble, moving swiftly between the trees, jumping and leaping with joy.
Before long, Kent spotted a Phantom Worm Spirit resting on a large green leaf. It was just within reach.
Kent immediately slowed down and stealthily approached.
Although Garfield had been released, thanks to its high loyalty, Kent could still share its abilities from a distance.
He was now moving as silently as a cat, quickly closing in within ten meters. He planned to close the gap and make a sudden leap to capture the creature with his bug-catching net.
However, the Phantom Worm Spirit was extremely alert. It opened its eyes just as Kent was about to strike, let out a strange cry, and swiftly jumped away.
Kent wasn't about to let it escape and chased after it.
But in the dense forest, his movement was hindered, and he couldn't move fast enough to catch it. The Phantom Worm Spirit soon disappeared from view.
"Damn it… It's so clever. I was so careful, and it still noticed me."
Kent felt a bit defeated. Did this mean that even with Garfield, it would still be tough to catch?
He could imagine the frustration of the other students. Some of them were probably cursing under their breath.
However, there was a chance that those who teamed up to encircle the creature might have better luck. And with their summoned beasts, they could increase their chances.
Just as Kent was thinking this, Wukong jumped onto his side, holding a struggling Phantom Worm Spirit in its hand, grinning widely and showing it to Kent.
