Chapter 37: Wild Giant Bear
The trial lasted for a week—not too long, but not too short either. It was essentially like an internship for combat summons.
For those who adapted quickly, it was like a fish in water—getting along fine. For those who didn't, they were simply unsuitable for becoming combat summoners and would be better off staying in the city, forever gazing up at the blue sky and white clouds outside.
Kent, however, felt a wild call, a sense of freedom, and a desire to charge forward.
This vast world, this enormous battlefield, felt like the kingdom of kings and the land of heroes. A surge of fighting spirit arose in his heart, a hidden urge to break free and explore.
Of course, that was just a thought. With his current abilities, to put it bluntly, he was utterly unskilled.
That night, they arrived at an open area, about thirty miles from Microglow City. The surroundings, while part of the city's outskirts, had been cleared of any dangerous monsters. There were no large, terrifying creatures in sight, which made it safe enough for combat summoners to rest.
They also discovered a few motorcycles and an off-road vehicle, all of which were broken and useless. These vehicles, worth several thousand to tens of thousands of credits, were tools used by combat summoners for traveling long distances or making rapid assaults.
In addition, there were traces of large cargo trucks—used for transporting goods, resources, and the carcasses of monsters. These massive creatures, whose bodies held significant research and nutritional value, were simply too difficult for human labor to carry, so large trucks were needed instead.
With so many people having passed through here, it was rare for any monsters to venture in, which made it a popular camping spot for summoners.
That evening, all four hundred students from Saint Stone High arrived at the site and set up camp in designated areas. Instructors, with students in tow, took turns standing guard to prevent any night-time monster ambushes.
Kent, unable to sleep, lay on his back, gazing up at the night sky. The starry sky reminded him of his past life when he lived in the countryside, and the mountain sky back then had been just as mesmerizing. Now, under this sky, here and now, the sight of the stars still stirred deep emotions within him.
He couldn't help but wonder if this world's stars were in the same sky as Earth's, or perhaps part of the same universe?
Lost in thought, Garfield suddenly nudged up next to him, shrinking in size to sleep by his side.
Suddenly, the shrill sound of a whistle broke the silence, causing everyone to stir. Students and instructors alike rushed out of their tents, only to see a signal flare rising in the distance.
Under the bright light, a massive, mountain-sized ape-like creature stood—at least forty meters tall. Its body was strong and wild, and its eyes were as large as lanterns, shooting out beams of blood-red light. It was a six-legged bear, its fur gray and stiff, like sword blades. Standing upright, it took heavy steps, each one covering nearly ten yards. Its approach was menacing, and it sent a chill down the spine.
Kent looked around. His first group of classmates were nearby, and Instructor He's face had changed. He ordered, "Assess the situation, and prioritize keeping everyone safe."
Even the instructor was visibly shaken by the creature's presence, confirming how terrifying it was. The monster's power was undeniable, and it was bold enough to single-handedly attack such a large group of humans, which frightened many students.
Zhao Mengxi, her face pale, instinctively looked for someone to rely on. The only person who appeared calm was Kent. She called out, "Kent, are you scared of such a huge monster?"
Kent nodded lightly, "Of course I'm scared. I'm pretty sure even the instructors aren't a match for it."
"Ah? How do you know?" Zhao Mengxi asked.
Kent suddenly realized that, aside from him, none of them had the ability to scan and read monster attributes. They could only sense a monster's power based on its aura, but with the distance still several kilometers away, it was hard to make an accurate judgment.
"I just know. Otherwise, why would you ask me and not the others?" Kent teased. Then he said, "Don't worry, if things get dangerous, stay close to me. I'll definitely protect you."
"Oh… what's this about?" Zhao Mengxi rolled her eyes. "Others would take this chance to flirt, but you're just randomly confessing? Well, I'll follow your advice."
"Hmm, I'll protect you. If you lose even a hair, I'll kiss a crab's mouth."
"Kiss a crab's mouth?" Zhao Mengxi thought he was unreliable now. "Shouldn't it be 'fall on your sword to apologize?'"
"Damn, losing a hair and needing to die for it? Is it really that serious? And by the way, is your hair really that precious?" Kent said in frustration.
Zhao Mengxi didn't know how to respond. She realized she had been dragged into a trap, engaging in idle banter when there was danger right in front of them. She silently regretted it.
Kent observed the increasingly close giant bear and quickly scanned its attributes.
Monster Name: Wild Giant Bear
Monster Rank: Low Golden
Monster Level: 42 (Lord Level)
Abilities:
Unstoppable charge.Innate godly strength, capable of shifting mountains.Swallowing vortex, able to kill prey from a distance.
Weaknesses:
Eyes. The bear's eyesight is average, though it has a keen sense of smell. Its massive eyes are its most vulnerable point.Rage. The bear has a fiery temper, and if provoked, it will not stop until it kills the offender.
Kent felt more at ease. Although this wild giant bear was a low Golden-tier monster at Lord level, it was only capable of handling about five or six Silver-tier Lord-level monsters. And most of the instructors' summoned beasts were at the Silver-tier Lord level.
"Come on, let's find a good spot to watch the battle," Kent said, his spirit reinvigorated.
He grabbed Zhao Mengxi's hand and pulled her toward a nearby tall building.
Zhao Mengxi froze, instinctively trying to pull away, but then decided against it, following him instead. Their summoned beasts—Space Flame Beast and Golden Cat King—followed closely behind.
Kent shared Garfield's high-jump ability, and within a few leaps, they reached the top of the building, several dozen meters high.
He set Zhao Mengxi down with some force, then looked around.
"Zhao Mengxi, isn't this a perfect spot to watch the battle?"
Zhao Mengxi didn't respond immediately, her face flushed with embarrassment. She had never been held like this before, especially by a male. But looking at Kent's oblivious expression, she couldn't help but feel a mix of annoyance and amusement. She briefly questioned if she had become unattractive.
Taking a deep breath, she finally stood beside Kent, gazing out at the battle below.
All the students had retreated and gathered in one area, preparing for battle. Even Leng Zimu had set up a mortar, ready to fire.
Kent's lips twitched. As expected, the wealthy students were always playing around with whatever they wanted. The sight of them using such expensive equipment was rather envy-inducing.
Zhao Mengxi seemed to notice his gaze and proudly said, "What do you think?"
Kent was momentarily stunned, then saw the wide variety of weapons and equipment laid out on the ground—everything from hot weapons to cold ones, including a small missile launcher, the kind that could destroy a bus with a single shot.
"Impressed?" Zhao Mengxi asked, smugly.
Kent subconsciously nodded in agreement. "Really… You're truly the daughter of General Zhao. They've prepared everything for you. Wait… is this missile launcher a banned item? It's hard to get your hands on one. Did General Zhao really give this to you?"
