Chapter 25: Irredeemable
After dinner at the school canteen, Kent couldn't help but feel a bit nostalgic. It seemed unlikely he would get to enjoy the school's big pot meals again. Just then, his phone buzzed, and a message came through on the class group chat. The class monitor, Chen Yuan, had posted an announcement for a graduation party that would be held in the classroom that night, requesting all members to attend.
Kent thought back to his own graduation party in his previous life. Time passed so quickly, and it was a reminder of how relentless time could be.
Back in his dorm, Kent quickly packed his things. Now that he had the system at his disposal, making money seemed easy enough, so he decided to leave behind most of his less valuable possessions. In the end, all that was left in his backpack were two books, a few changes of clothes, and everything else was discarded.
He took one last stroll around the campus. The narrow lane was filled with dappled shadows from the trees, and the moonlight filtered through the leaves, casting spots of light on the ground. It felt so serene, and even his mood seemed to calm as he walked.
He wandered for a while, lost in thought, when suddenly he felt the urge to recite a poem. He softly murmured to himself, "This moon is not the same as before, what night is this? I send my longing through the snow, pity the lonely ghost!"
As he finished speaking, he heard light footsteps behind him. He turned quickly, only to find a familiar figure standing in the distance, where the dim light shone softly, smiling with a charming, seductive air.
"Didn't expect you to write poetry," came a sweet voice, accompanied by the sight of Zhao Mengxi. Her slender figure and long hair cascaded down like a waterfall.
Kent rubbed his nose awkwardly, thinking to himself, Is this some kind of fate between us?
"I don't really write poetry, I just made it up," Kent waved dismissively.
"Are you lonely?" Zhao Mengxi didn't seem to mind his response and directly asked, "What does 'pity the lonely ghost' mean?"
Kent hesitated, not sure how to answer, and finally said, "I once read a saying, 'A lonely ghost, a lying mouth, initially it's hard to understand, but as you experience life, you begin to realize. No matter how busy you are or how much noise surrounds you, there is always a place in your heart that remains lonely, untouched by anyone, and if others notice it, you make up lies to cover it up, afraid that anyone might see it."
"So..." Zhao Mengxi fiddled with her hair, smiling lightly, "Are you expressing your feelings of secret love? You want to confess your longing, but you pity yourself as a lonely ghost, afraid to be rejected."
"Uh..." Kent was at a loss for words. Her interpretation did seem to make more sense than his own.
However, in relation to the first half of the poem, what Kent truly meant was his longing for his past life, where on Earthstar, he had felt completely alone, without anyone to share common ground with.
"Who... is she?" Zhao Mengxi seemed very interested in the topic and asked spontaneously.
Kent smiled awkwardly and shook his head, "It's graduation soon, and we'll all go our separate ways. Life has its own way of turning out, and maybe everyone will change. There's no point dwelling on it, so I'm a bit sentimental. In the future, life might get lonelier. I just want to embrace the present moment a bit more. In reality, I don't have anyone special."
"I see," Zhao Mengxi misunderstood again, "So you're a person who's sentimental, lamenting over the passing seasons. But this kind of thinking is a bit negative. It's probably because you haven't had close friends around you for a long time. I think you should find a gentle, caring girlfriend. That way, you'll live a much happier life and grow more mature."
Kent internally wanted to cry. Why did she always steer the conversation toward this? He was starting to feel embarrassed by how much concern Zhao Mengxi was showing for him.
"No, I'm still young. I'm just managing to support myself. If I add the responsibility of someone else, it'll be a burden," Kent said firmly, making it clear he wasn't interested in discussing the matter further.
"Is that so?" Zhao Mengxi covered her mouth and smiled playfully, her beautiful eyes gleaming, "You have a strong backer, yet you insist on being independent. It's hard to understand."
Kent's expression froze. What does that mean?
Soon, he understood and sighed with a bitter smile, "The external and internal aspects of life aren't really related. If you rely too much on others, you risk becoming addicted to that dependency. So, unless absolutely necessary, I prefer to be self-reliant."
"That's an interesting perspective," Zhao Mengxi said with a smile, her eyes sparkling with admiration. "You seem very independent."
"Now that we've talked so much about me, it's only fair you tell me something about yourself," Kent said.
"Me? What's there to talk about? Everyone already knows everything about me. I have no privacy. Even if I sneeze, it's reported in the news," Zhao Mengxi sighed, looking frustrated.
"That does sound pretty dull."
Kent, a straightforward single guy, promptly dropped the topic and glanced at his identity wristband. It was nearly 9 PM, and the graduation party was about to start. He quickly said, "Sorry, I have to go to the class graduation party."
Without waiting for Zhao Mengxi to reply, he swiftly left.
Zhao Mengxi stared at him in surprise, her eyes wide as she thought, What is this? I thought this was a perfect opportunity for us to get to know each other better. How could he just leave?
"Ha, he really is a hopeless case. Irredeemable," she muttered coldly, leaving as well.
...
When Kent entered the classroom, he was greeted by a familiar sight: desks pushed together to form a large circle, with snacks like peanuts, fruits, beer, and fried chicken scattered around. He immediately spotted a seat in the corner and decided to quietly watch the event unfold.
Soon, all the students arrived and found their seats. Yun Xiaoxiao, with her bright and captivating eyes, immediately spotted Kent.
"Zhou Yun, can I take this seat?" she asked sweetly, addressing the student who was about to sit next to Kent.
Zhou Yun, who had been about to sit by Kent, was gently tapped on the shoulder and heard Yun Xiaoxiao's soft voice. He immediately withdrew and left without a word.
"Wow, you really know how to pick a spot. Just so you know, tonight's main focus is on you," Yun Xiaoxiao teased, moving her chair closer to Kent, so close that he could feel the warmth of her soft skin.
Kent's face turned slightly red. He felt a bit flustered and warm inside.
"It's fine. This is just a graduation party, a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. We're all the main characters tonight. As for me, I just want to quietly enjoy my snacks," Kent said, flashing a smile.
"Well then, how about this?" Yun Xiaoxiao whispered into his ear, holding a small, delicate pink package.
Kent looked down, his ears turning red. She was... so forward. This was way too much! This was crossing the line!
