The Apocalyptic Command: A Military Isekai LitRPG

Chapter 61: Fat Digger Hunting

Quagmire, with a quick step-by-step from stable to less stable ones, made sure that if it ever collapsed, he would hold onto something hard and unmovable, which is typically rocks that are embedded into the ground. With each step taken, another look and glance from side to side, and each one is another thought and calculation into the mind itself. With precise thinking and calculation, he was able to make way further down, and eventually, given enough time, he was able to arrive at the bottom of the gigantic hole that sank earlier, due to the caves further in collapsing.

Upon arriving down the hole, almost immediately, he scanned the surroundings, all the while activating eagle's eye. This allowed him to scan and focus through the smallest opening and possible loophole that an enemy might use at a later date.

Once he was sure that it was clear, he retracted his eagle's eye. With it, his time that was slowed down earlier became increasingly fast, and soon enough, it was back to normal as if nothing had happened earlier. As usual, it was a bit unsettling to Quagmire, but he did not mind it much. After all, it is an ability that somehow enhances or changes his body, and so that was just his body's way of adapting to the changes.

Upon retraction, he took a quick scan through his surroundings, and took a sigh of relief once it was finally confirmed. The task that he has set out to do this time is to investigate the ground that has collapsed and to try and see if there are other open pathways that the ghouls could take advantage of. Finally, to end it with hunting the fat diggers that were collapsed. It must have been just temporarily unable to move, as with its body, unless its head is fully crushed or shot and penetrated, it will be moving.

With a glance from the side and into his pistol, he pushed back some of his more irritating thoughts into the back of his head and continued further into the path he was walking on. As he was walking, he proceeded to sharpen his ears. He listened for movements and observed dark spots for sudden movements, as he could not see those areas very well. His heart was beating, he could feel it, his body could feel it, the thrill and heat, it excited him, and at the same time, he wanted to give up.

Although he loves the feeling of thrill and excitement, he usually fears those. As with all things in life, nothing is perfect, and if there was something positive, there was also a negative side to the coin. He knew if he was feeling something like this, then that only meant one thing: he was doing something risky. He enjoys them, but is it right for him to do such a thing? After all, he has much better things to do, and giving this job to his sons once they grew, or have them help him, or even just accompany him, would be much better than this, but hey, no pain, no gain, he guessed.

He figured if he wanted to be always ahead, he needed to take the lead first, no matter if there was some kind of penalty to it or whatever. Moreover, this kind of personality, even if dangerous, would be a good lesson and trait to be passed on and a good example for leadership and taking the initiative in warfare.

After all, in modern warfare, those who have the initiative always win, and as much as possible, it should be passed down to the very lowest level, such as the common soldiers. They need to have independence yet be rigid, fluid yet organized, as they say. That is what initiative is, which is also the reason why commanders of the modern era give a lot of vague orders, as this would allow for more open interpretation and use of strategies and tactics.

Basically, in a sense, you take this fortress, but it is up to you how you will do it. Here are the resources you could use for your task. It invokes creativity and therefore innovation, much better than the rigid warfare of the past with all those corporal punishment and so.

All the while reminiscing about his old time in the military of the old world he used to belong in, Quagmire's ears suddenly perk to the sudden yet subtle sound that echoed before him.

Upon hearing the sound, he quietly lowered his body and slightly brought his pistol forward, but not upward; he needed to have some room for other movements, as he was still not sure from where the sound came from.

Attempting to find the source of the sound, he further decreased the amount of air he breathed in and slowed it down. It was now silent, but then suddenly there was something that fell, the sound of grinding and crushing of stones. With a source to track, Quagmire moved with deadly precision yet graceful steps, to the point that not even a footstep was left behind.

As he gets closer, the sounds of growling and the howl of desperation echo through the surroundings. His steps slowed down as it got louder and louder, and eventually he arrived behind a collapsed ground, and he could practically hear that behind it was a fat digger, its growl was getting louder and louder.

But there was one weird thing that left him confused. There was a sound of whimpering like an animal that is scared or injured. Curious, he peeked through and was left in shock. There were two things that were crushed under the piles of stones. One was a grave digger, and one, which seemed like a wolf cub, or what it looked to be.

To his horror, the fat digger was inching closer, growling due to hunger at the wolf cub, its eyes menacing. The wolf cub was whimpering with an injured body and legs at the side of a pile of stones.

Quagmire, distressed decided to make a move.
