Chapter 3: Chapter 2: The Deal
Dominic leaned against the edge of his desk, his posture casual, but the fire in his eyes betrayed a mind already calculating every angle. The room felt charged, a silent tension crackling between him and Sophia, who stood defiantly, her arms crossed as if bracing for battle.
"A deal, you said?" Dominic's lips curved into a predatory smile, his voice velvet and steel. "You're in no position to negotiate, Miss Lane. But I'll humor you. What do you think you have to offer me?"
Sophia took a steadying breath, willing her racing heart to calm. She was in over her head—she knew that. But she also knew she couldn't afford to show weakness. Not to a man like Dominic Valtor.
"You want answers," she said, her voice steady despite the knots in her stomach. "And I want out of here without a one-way ticket to some corporate blacksite. So, here's the deal: I'll tell you how I got into EVE's system and what I found. In return, you let me walk away."
Dominic chuckled, low and dark, as if she had just told the punchline to an inside joke. "Walk away? That's ambitious. But let me tell you how this really works. You'll tell me everything you know, then I'll decide whether you walk away—or if you stay and work for me under much less favorable terms."
Sophia's pulse quickened. Work for him? The idea was as thrilling as it was terrifying. But she wasn't ready to give up her freedom, not without a fight.
"Not happening," she shot back. "I work for myself. Always have, always will."
Dominic's smile widened, though it didn't reach his eyes. "We'll see about that."
He pushed off the desk and began to circle her like a predator stalking its prey. His movements were deliberate, his presence magnetic and overwhelming. Sophia refused to flinch, even as every instinct told her to run.
"Start talking," he ordered. "How did you get past EVE's defenses?"
Sophia hesitated. Giving him the truth felt like handing him a loaded weapon aimed directly at her head. But lying? That could get her killed. She decided to hedge.
"I designed a custom protocol," she began carefully. "It's meant to mimic legitimate system queries—sneak in through the cracks, bypass firewalls without tripping alarms."
Dominic raised an eyebrow, intrigued despite himself. "Impressive. But EVE isn't just any system. She's adaptive, predictive. She doesn't have 'cracks.'"
Sophia smirked, a small spark of pride breaking through her fear. "Clearly, she does. Otherwise, I wouldn't be standing here, would I?"
Dominic stopped pacing, his piercing gaze locking onto hers. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, to her surprise, he laughed—a deep, genuine sound that sent a shiver down her spine.
"Touché," he said. "But don't get too comfortable. I still want to know what you were after."
"I wasn't after anything," Sophia insisted. "I stumbled into your system by accident. As soon as I realized what it was, I backed out."
Dominic's expression darkened, and the air in the room seemed to grow heavier. "You expect me to believe that? A hacker like you doesn't just 'stumble' into the world's most secure AI. You were looking for something. The only question is, who sent you?"
"No one sent me!" Sophia snapped, her frustration bubbling over. "I'm not some corporate spy or hired gun, okay? I work for myself. End of story."
Dominic studied her for a long moment, his sharp blue eyes peeling back layers of her defenses. Sophia felt like he could see straight through her, down to the parts of herself she tried to keep hidden. It was unsettling—and infuriating.
"Fine," he said at last, his voice deceptively calm. "Let's assume, for now, that you're telling the truth. That still leaves the question of what to do with you."
Sophia's stomach tightened. This was the moment she'd been dreading. She braced herself for the worst, but Dominic's next words caught her completely off guard.
"You're clearly talented," he said, his tone almost… admiring? "And talent is something I value. So, here's my offer: work for me. Help me identify and close the vulnerabilities in EVE's system. In return, I'll forget this little… intrusion ever happened."
Sophia blinked, taken aback. "You want me to work for you? After all this?"
"Why not?" Dominic said with a shrug. "You've already proven you can do what most of my top engineers can't. And if you're as independent as you claim, I imagine you'll appreciate the… flexibility my offer provides."
Sophia narrowed her eyes, suspicion flaring. "What's the catch?"
Dominic smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "The catch is that you'll be working for me, Miss Lane. And I don't tolerate failure. If you accept, you'll be under constant scrutiny. Every move you make, every line of code you write—it'll all be monitored. Step out of line, and you'll wish you'd never heard my name."
Sophia's mind raced. The offer was as dangerous as it was enticing. Working for Dominic Valtor would be like walking a tightrope over a pit of vipers. One misstep, and she'd be done for. But the alternative—facing his wrath as an enemy—was even more terrifying.
"Do I have a choice?" she asked finally.
"Not really," Dominic admitted, his smile turning predatory. "But I like to give the illusion of one."
Sophia took a deep breath, weighing her options. Then, with a defiant lift of her chin, she said, "Fine. I'll work for you. But on one condition."
Dominic's eyebrows lifted, intrigued. "Oh? And what might that be?"
"I want access to EVE's core," she said boldly. "If I'm going to secure your system, I need to understand it. All of it."
For the first time, Dominic's expression faltered. His eyes narrowed, and Sophia could see the wheels turning in his mind. Finally, he nodded.
"Very well," he said. "But don't think for a second that I'll let you out of my sight."
---
Hours later, Sophia sat in a sleek, high-tech lab deep within Valtor Industries. Monitors lined the walls, each displaying complex streams of data from EVE's network. Dominic stood behind her, watching intently as she worked.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard, her mind wholly focused on the task at hand. But beneath her calm exterior, she was seething. Dominic might have won this round, but she wasn't about to let him control her forever. She would play along—for now. But she was already planning her next move.
Unbeknownst to Dominic, Sophia had planted a hidden subroutine in the system. A tiny seed of rebellion, buried deep within EVE's code. It wouldn't activate unless she triggered it, but knowing it was there gave her a small sense of power in a situation where she had so little.
"Impressive," Dominic said, breaking the silence. "You're faster than I expected."
"Years of practice," Sophia replied without looking up.
Dominic leaned closer, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "Just remember, Miss Lane—if you try to cross me, you won't get a second chance."
Sophia glanced over her shoulder, meeting his gaze with a fiery determination. "I don't need second chances," she said.
Dominic smiled, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "We'll see."
And so, the game began.
