Chapter 3: Chapter 2
Note: I know that this is annoying, but please give me Power Stones! T_T...
The other Wheel of Fortune seems to be exactly the same as the other. The only thing that changes is that instead of saying which world I'll go to, here it is written just "Power."
There's nothing to complain about. Both are stupid; it's a fact. And the other was nothing so special to be remembered. "World to be sent" is really just a boring way to say the way that I'm screwed.
Finally, I spun the wheel, which was as light as the other. After just leaving me to wait for the result, while that, I was trying not to read those words that were passing by my eyes. If I did, I probably would become very envious about the other powers that I'll never have.
It's not that my luck was really bad, but what is the chance for me to gain a really cool and powerful power? Or even, what if I gain some power that hurts me when used? Or makes it necessary to kill other sentient beings for me to be capable of increasing my power? Let's not forget about the existence of Demons and Vampires in Yggdrasil and the New World.
If I can choose, at least to fit well in this scenario, the best power is to become a Dragon Lord. Wild Magic is probably the most important weapon against the forces of Nazarick. But how many Dragon Lords still exist? And I don't know if all of them united can really defeat all the NPCs from the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Most probably not.
Maybe Runecraft? But how much time will I have before their arrival? It's not that it's an end of the world after that, but how freely will I be capable of moving on the continent with the spies of Demiurge in literally all civilized places?
Technically, these powers are not to be just from the New World. And actually, if we are just imagining such possibilities, the power could even be the system of the Yggdrasil world slash game. But even choosing the correct classes and finding a really fantastical way to gain sufficient XP really quickly in such a weak world to put me at level 100, will I be capable of fighting against Ainz, the Guardians, and many, many other NPCs? If I'm not correct, all the levels in Nazarick add up to something around two thousand.
How many hundreds of players at level 100 during the time of Yggdrasil didn't try to defeat Nazarick just to miserably fall inside its tomb?
Okay, my current situation is extremely complicated.
Finally, the wheel seemed to slow down, and by a slip of my will, my eyes got in touch with the word "Shalidor."
If this was my power, I think that I at least can be capable of escaping from this threat. Actually, if I were to gain the powers of a powerful and immortal mage from Tamriel, I just need to make some alchemy cheat, make a really powerful spell with zero cost of magicka, and send them a nuke capable of annihilating everyone inside those pocket dimensions. Or maybe I can even use an illusion to make Ainz sign a contract with Azura, just for him to break it and then Azura kills them all. This is a win-win ending.
But this is not my power, and the wheel continued to spin until it ended on the word "Andrew Detmer."
Andrew Detmer?
Who is this guy?
"Man, who is Andrew Detmer?"
A little surprised by the question, the man spoke to me.
"What, you never saw Chronicle in your life? That movie that has some guys with psychic powers… Andrew was the protagonist… well, I guess he was the protagonist because it's a found footage movie, so maybe the protagonist was his cousin, but this doesn't matter for the focus of the narrative. The cliffhanger was all about him making bad decisions or just being stupid. Their powers between him and his cousin were basically identical, but Andrew was the one who had the most powerful talent in this subject."
I really remember now. Well, I wasn't capable of knowing just by the name Andrew, but Chronicle? Obviously, I've already seen this great movie. I don't know why, but while almost everyone hates found footage movies, I always liked them. Chronicle, Afflicted, Lake Mungo, and many others were movies that I watched multiple times during my life.
But Chronicle was the first that I saw and was the one that became more famous outside of this small group of found footage enjoyers.
"So, my power will be telekinesis? Hm, not so bad as I was figuring."
Telekinesis is an extremely powerful ability, not because I can lift heavy things with my mind, but because I can literally obliterate someone with just a small usage of this power in their brain. Oh! Are you trying to steal from me? Have a stroke, bitch! Ahahaha!!!
Well, I don't think that I really will use this power to kill people… but thinking again, almost everyone in the New World will be bad people. Maybe so, I really will need to kill many of them… problematic.
"Indeed, your power will be telekinesis, but the talent of Andrew Detmer was much deeper than what was shown in those movies. In the end, he died too quickly for his real talents to flourish."
"What are you trying to say? All powers that they have are based on some kind of physical control that starts purely from their minds. Even their explosions are just them being capable of literally controlling the particles in small ways around them."
"No, no. Telekinesis is a really powerful ability, but it's not the ultimate goal of this power, which is reality warping… I know that they seem to be the same thing, but when someone tries to kill you by splitting your soul in two, you'll see how they really are different concepts. Well, or different rankings if you want to see it that way."
"But obviously, a normal telekinetic dude, like Andrew's cousin, will never be capable of manifesting it. All their manipulations are inside the physical world, while you can manifest them in other more subtle planes… really a good power. Nice luck, Edgar. Good for you."
"Well, not so good when you remember that you'll just have some years, and not centuries, to increase your power to a godlike existence. But… it's going to have to be like this. Obviously, in the end, you can just become a lackey if you want, but I don't know. Ainz was incapable of increasing his power… how will he maintain your life when you will be just a strange misunderstanding of that world?"
"Anyway! Time for your new life. Are you excited?"
"No, I'm not excited. If you want some answer, horrified would be… extremely. I'm fucked… literally, it's over."
With a smile to me, he simply said, "Great to know that. You probably are right… there exists some merit in understanding your actual situation… good to know. Now, bye. I want to never see you again."
And with the same smile that he gave to me, my eyes seemed to begin to slowly close, like it was some kind of bad movie transition, or a Star Wars transition but much more slowly.
Many of the Star Wars movies are bad movies, but it's just an anecdote…
And like that, my own body came into existence. All the strange feelings that at some time before were trying to mimic the physical ones began to disappear, and I sensed my own mind flowing in some eternal sea of nothing.
Just a few moments after this peculiar but good sensation, which could have been my eternal life after my death if I was not kidnapped. But after this, my mind slowly finally started to sleep, and now, there's nothing. It's different from just sleeping like I was in my body. There's no dreaming, and I'm not actually inert, but thoughts seem to be incapable of being constructed during this form.
And so, like the way that this happened, my new life begins.
POV From the World:
Different from what Edgar was capable of expecting, being a baby seems not to be so bad.
Obviously, he doesn't at this time have any memories about having other memories. Just a few minutes after he is reborn in this world, being now a cute baby with purple hair and small but pointy ears, he just exists in the arms of his human mother and elven father.
The first weeks were a constant cycle of serenity and the most terrible acts of crying and childishness… But who can blame him for that, right?
Inside the capital of the elf country, two elves, in an informal tone, spoke.
"You really will abandon the future of your son and daughter just to make your wife happy? Really, Otto?"
While they spoke, both seemed to hold some glasses made of wood that strangely had some runes that made the beverage inside incapable of losing its temperature.
"It's not that I think that you're wrong… you are just not comprehending the whole picture of my situation."
"Now with the crescent military incidents against the Theocracy, how can I guarantee that my wife, or even my son and daughter, will be safe in this city? I know that the half-elves absorb much more of their elf parts, even aging in the same way as us. But… their heritage… I just don't want to risk it."
It seemed there weren't many things to speak about it, as it was actually a pretty real thing to happen if a human or even half-elf stayed in what they are, especially in a noble position as your own father has. The man spoke.
"Okay, okay. I know that this makes sense, but even that. I just… it's your home. You are a noble, for God's sake… you really will abandon your position just to try to make a new life in the newly formed Empire?"
"At least you'll make your son a Runemaster, right? RIGHT??"
"Obviously, I know that the men, and even dwarves, have forgotten about such beautiful art, but I, you, and my son never will."
"Good. So I actually think that you'll need to teach me some things before you go. At least with your money, you'll never need to work again in your life. Not for the first century, I guess… it's like a retirement, but… much more problematic, brother."
"Okay, let's not speak about this again, at least not until the end of this celebration. Incidentally, did you hear about what Imina did last week?"
"What? Wait, she really is following the path of your wife? Do you really permit her to hunt a boar? Are you crazy?… Are you fucking crazy, brother!"
"Well, knowing that we are going to probably never see these forests again for the next decades, why not? And another thing, she already has her ten years. And it was obvious that she was not alone… but still, she was really cute when she came back to the principal house. She tried to help with the cleaning… and the smell… she stayed with that smell for days, days, Erik!"
They both seemed to smile about it. With the father of Imina, Otto, laughing hysterically when remembering the images of that day.
"Besides my lovely daughter, my stupid and little son doesn't stay much behind. Just yesterday, I saw him trying to walk, even just after two months of his birth… really a brilliant child… I don't have any questions about his future. Obviously, he's not inheriting these lands, but you know that they are creating schools in Baharuth for magical purposes? Yes, obviously, my son will not frequent such a stupid place with that stupid and inefficient magical system, but indeed, I believe that those places will be extremely helpful for him growing as a new Runemaster."
"It certainly doesn't hurt to dream…"
"Damn human mages… is it too difficult to study some decades before making any progress? Bastards…"
Thinking about it, he just said, speaking again.
"God, what if my wife was here now, haha. If that were the case, I would be completely screwed. I don't know if you know, but my father-in-law is an important Enchanter in the capital of Re-Estize… just destiny playing with me."
