Tangled Lines

Chapter 3: A Surprising Request

The days after the meeting blurred together. Emma threw herself into her work, determined to keep things professional. Every time Jonathan's eyes found hers across the office, her pulse would quicken, and her breath would catch yet she would quickly look away, trying to mask the effect he still had on her. She couldn't afford to let her emotions get in the way. Not again.

But no matter how much she tried to focus on her tasks, she found herself obsessing over the smallest details. The way Jonathan's hand had brushed against hers when he'd passed her a file. The faintest hint of a smile when their eyes met. Were those signals? Or was she just reading too much into things?

It didn't help that her team was already starting to feel the shift in power dynamics. Conversations became more guarded, and coworkers seemed to tiptoe around Jonathan, clearly aware of the history between them. The office buzzed with whispers, but Emma did her best to block them out. She had enough on her plate without adding rumors to the mix.

But then, on Thursday afternoon, everything changed. Emma was at her desk, her eyes fixed on a spreadsheet, when she heard her name.

"Emma, can I see you for a moment?" Jonathan's voice was clear and authoritative, cutting through the hum of the office.

She looked up, surprised. Jonathan was standing in the doorway of her cubicle, his posture straight and his expression unreadable. There was no hint of the awkwardness from earlier in the week—today, he seemed purely businesslike.

"Sure," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. She grabbed her notebook and followed him down the hall toward his office.

Once inside, Jonathan gestured for her to sit, and Emma took a seat across from him, her stomach twisting in anticipation.

"Emma, I've been going over the upcoming campaign proposal," Jonathan began, pulling out a few papers from a folder. "And I think we need a fresh perspective. We've had the same ideas floating around for a while, and I believe you might have something new to bring to the table."

Emma raised an eyebrow. She had expected him to call her in for something routine maybe to follow up on the social media campaign or discuss the product launch. But this? This was different.

"You want me to take the lead on it?" she asked cautiously, unsure of where this was going.

Jonathan nodded, his gaze steady. "Yes. I've seen your work in the past. You've got the creativity we need. I want you to run the brainstorming session with the team next week. You can structure it however you think will be most effective, but I trust your judgment."

Her breath caught in her throat. Was this happening? Jonathan, the same person who had always overshadowed her, was asking her to lead a critical part of the campaign. She knew this was a big opportunity, but it was also a huge risk. The idea of taking charge and standing in front of the team especially with Jonathan watching—filled her with both excitement and dread.

"Are you sure?" Emma asked, her voice betraying a hint of uncertainty. "I mean, you're the director. Shouldn't you be overseeing something like this?"

Jonathan leaned back in his chair, his gaze thoughtful. "I could. But this is your area of expertise. You know what works. I want to see what you bring to the table."

His words were a sharp contrast to the way he used to speak to her when they were together. There had been no "you know what works" back then—just an easy back-and-forth. A partnership, even. But now, everything felt distant. Even the compliments had an edge to them. A sense of authority that didn't exist before.

Still, the weight of the offer was not lost on her. She had worked hard to get here, and Jonathan's confidence in her abilities, however professional it was, still made her feel seen. Maybe this was the challenge she needed. Maybe this was her chance to prove herself, not just to him, but to everyone who had ever doubted her.

"Okay," she said, gathering her thoughts. "I'll prepare the session. I'll need a few things from the team, though."

"Of course," Jonathan replied, nodding. "I'll make sure you have what you need. And if you need any input from me, don't hesitate to ask."

"Thanks," Emma said, her tone more confident now. She stood up, ready to leave. "I'll get started on the agenda."

Jonathan hesitated before she could walk out the door. "Emma," he said, his voice softer than before. She turned to face him, her heart skipping a beat. "I know things have been... complicated. But I believe in your abilities. You're doing great work."

She froze. His words struck a chord deep within her, but she quickly pushed them aside. She couldn't let him get under her skin, not like this.

"Thanks," she said again, more curtly this time, before turning and walking out of the office.

Back at her desk, Emma sat for a long time, staring at her computer screen. Her mind was racing. This was huge. But it was also terrifying. The weight of the responsibility made her palms sweat, and she could already feel the pressure mounting. She knew she had the skills, she had always known that. But now, with Jonathan's eyes on her, with the shadow of their past looming over everything, it felt like more than just a professional challenge. It felt like a test.

And what if she failed?

Her phone buzzed, breaking her thoughts. It was a message from her best friend, Sarah.

"How's the first week with your ex-boss going? :)"

Emma couldn't help but smile at the message. Sarah had been the one person she'd confided in about Jonathan's promotion, her anxiety, her hope that things could somehow work out.

"It's... fine. He gave me the lead on the next brainstorming session."

Sarah's reply came almost instantly.

"Wait. WHAT?! Seriously?! That's huge!! You're going to crush it!"

Emma chuckled, but the nerves in her stomach didn't go away. "I hope so. But I'm freaking out a little."

"You've got this. You're amazing, remember? If he didn't believe in you, he wouldn't be giving you this chance."

Emma smiled again, feeling a little reassured. Sarah was right. This was an opportunity. She could either let her fear paralyze her or rise to the occasion. There was no middle ground.

Taking a deep breath, she started typing up an outline for the session. One thing at a time. She could do this.

Later that evening, Emma sat at her kitchen table, coffee in hand, as she reviewed her notes. Her phone buzzed again, and she glanced down. It was Jonathan.

"Let me know if you need anything for the session tomorrow. I'll be around if you need extra support."

She stared at the message for a long moment, unsure of how to respond. He was offering help, being the supportive boss. But a part of her felt conflicted, wondering if he was offering something else, something more personal.

She typed back, keeping it professional.

"Thanks, I'll reach out if I need anything."

She hit send, then set her phone aside. She knew tomorrow would be a challenge, but it was a challenge she was ready for. Jonathan had put his faith in her. Now, she had to prove that she deserved it.
