Tamer of Death

Chapter 10: The Keeper's Warning

The air in the Realm of Beasts was heavier than ever, as if the land itself was mourning the destruction of the creature they had just vanquished. Dae-hyon's legs trembled, and his breaths came shallow, but he pressed forward. Eryon walked by his side, its golden eyes scanning the surroundings, every muscle in its powerful body tense and ready.

"What now?" Dae-hyon muttered, mostly to himself, as he wiped the sweat from his brow.

Ahead, the landscape began to shift, the jagged cliffs and darkened ground giving way to something eerily pristine. A field of glistening white flowers stretched out before them, their delicate petals shimmering like moonlight. The sight was beautiful, but it put Dae-hyon on edge. Nothing in this Realm was ever what it seemed.

Eryon growled softly, its gaze fixed on the center of the field. There, standing amid the flowers, was a figure cloaked in light. The figure turned slowly, and Dae-hyon's heart skipped a beat. It was her.

"The Keeper of Beasts," he whispered.

The woman's ethereal glow seemed even more intense now, her presence commanding yet oddly comforting. Her eyes met Dae-hyon's, and for a brief moment, he felt as though time itself had stopped.

"You've done well to make it this far," she said, her voice carrying a weight that made Dae-hyon's knees threaten to buckle. "But your journey is far from over."

Dae-hyon stepped forward, his grip tightening on his sword. "I've faced your trials. I've tamed the beasts. What more do you want from me?"

The Keeper's expression remained unreadable, her gaze shifting to Eryon. "The beasts you've tamed are only the beginning. They are tools, extensions of your will. But to truly master the power within you, you must go deeper — to the very heart of the Realm."

Dae-hyon felt a chill run down his spine. "The heart of the Realm? What's there?"

"A truth you are not ready to face," she replied, her tone colder now. "A power that can either save your world or destroy it."

Dae-hyon took another step forward, determination flaring in his eyes. "Then tell me what I need to do. I didn't come this far to turn back now."

The Keeper tilted her head, a flicker of something — approval? pity? — crossing her face. "The path to the heart is treacherous. It will test not only your strength but your very soul. And even if you succeed, the price you pay may be more than you are willing to bear."

Eryon growled low, as if in agreement, but Dae-hyon ignored it. "I don't care about the cost. If it means protecting my people, my home — I'll do whatever it takes."

The Keeper sighed, her gaze softening. "Bravery without wisdom is a dangerous thing, Tamer. But perhaps that is what makes you worthy."

With a wave of her hand, the field of flowers began to wither, the once-beautiful landscape transforming into a barren wasteland. At its center, a gaping chasm opened, a spiral staircase carved from obsidian leading down into darkness.

"This is the path," the Keeper said. "But know this: once you descend, there is no turning back."

Dae-hyon stared at the chasm, his resolve unwavering. "I never planned to."

Eryon moved closer, pressing its massive head against Dae-hyon's shoulder as if to offer reassurance. Dae-hyon placed a hand on the beast's fur, drawing strength from its presence.

The Keeper watched them in silence for a moment before stepping aside. "Then go, Tamer. Face the heart of the darkness, and may your will prove stronger than your fear."

As Dae-hyon approached the chasm, the faint glow of the Keeper began to fade, her form dissolving into the air like mist. Her parting words echoed in the wind.

"Remember, Dae-hyon: the heart will show you the truth. But not all truths are meant to be embraced."

With a deep breath, Dae-hyon began his descent, the cold air of the chasm wrapping around him like a shroud.

The spiral staircase seemed endless, plunging deeper into the dark abyss. Each step echoed faintly, swallowed by the oppressive silence that surrounded Dae-hyon and Eryon. The walls of the chasm glistened with an otherworldly sheen, as though the stone itself was alive, pulsating faintly with a dim, silvery light.

Dae-hyon tightened his grip on his sword, the weight of the Keeper's words pressing heavily on his mind. What truth awaited him at the heart of the Realm? And what price would he have to pay?

"Eryon," he murmured, glancing at the beast by his side. "If this goes sideways… you have to get out of here. No matter what."

The golden-eyed beast snorted, its low growl vibrating through the air. It was a sound of defiance, as though Eryon was refusing to entertain the idea of leaving Dae-hyon behind.

"I mean it," Dae-hyon said more firmly, pausing on the staircase to face his companion. "You've been by my side through everything. But if it comes down to it, you have to survive. You're more than just a weapon. You're—"

Eryon interrupted him with a sharp bark, its gaze unwavering. Dae-hyon sighed, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips despite the situation. "Stubborn as always."

The descent continued, the air growing colder with every step. Dae-hyon's breath came out in visible puffs, and frost began to creep along the edges of the stairs. The oppressive darkness seemed to press closer, its weight palpable.

Suddenly, the staircase ended, opening into a massive underground cavern. The air here was dense, heavy with an energy that sent a shiver down Dae-hyon's spine. The cavern was vast, its ceiling lost in shadow, and the ground was covered in what appeared to be a thin layer of shimmering water.

At the center of the cavern stood a monolithic structure, a black obelisk that pulsed with a rhythmic glow, like a beating heart. The light emanating from it was cold and alien, casting long, distorted shadows across the water's surface.

Dae-hyon approached cautiously, his footsteps creating ripples in the water. Eryon followed closely, its ears perked and its muscles tense.

As they neared the obelisk, whispers began to fill the air — faint and disjointed, like fragments of forgotten voices.

"Dae-hyon…"

The sound of his name stopped him in his tracks. The voice was familiar, achingly so, but he couldn't place it.

"Who's there?" he called out, his voice echoing in the cavern.

The whispers grew louder, overlapping and blending until they became a cacophony of sound. Dae-hyon gritted his teeth, his head pounding from the noise.

Eryon let out a warning growl, its fur bristling as it positioned itself protectively in front of Dae-hyon.

And then, as suddenly as they began, the whispers stopped.

The surface of the obelisk rippled like water, and from its depths emerged a figure — an exact replica of Dae-hyon.

"What the—" Dae-hyon staggered back, his heart racing as he stared at the doppelgänger.

The figure stepped forward, its movements fluid and unnatural. Its eyes glowed with the same eerie light as the obelisk, and its expression was a twisted mockery of Dae-hyon's own.

"I am your shadow," the figure said, its voice a distorted mirror of his own. "I am the truth you refuse to see. The part of you that you've buried, but can never escape."

Dae-hyon gripped his sword tightly, his pulse thundering in his ears. "I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm not afraid of you."

The shadow smirked, its form flickering like a flame. "Then prove it."

Without warning, the shadow lunged, its movements impossibly fast. Dae-hyon barely had time to raise his sword, the clash of metal on metal echoing through the cavern.

The force of the blow sent him stumbling backward, but he quickly recovered, locking eyes with his opponent. The shadow was strong — as strong as he was, if not stronger.

Eryon roared, leaping to Dae-hyon's side, but the shadow raised a hand, and a barrier of dark energy slammed into the beast, sending it skidding across the water.

"No!" Dae-hyon shouted, his anger flaring. He charged at the shadow, his strikes fueled by a mix of desperation and determination.

The battle was chaotic, each clash of their blades sending shockwaves through the cavern. But no matter how hard Dae-hyon fought, the shadow matched him blow for blow, its smirk never faltering.

"You can't defeat me," the shadow taunted. "Because I am you. And you can't escape what you are."

Dae-hyon gritted his teeth, his muscles burning as he swung his sword with all his strength. "You're wrong," he growled. "I'll forge my own path, no matter what it takes!"

The shadow hesitated for a split second, its smirk faltering. Dae-hyon seized the opportunity, his blade slicing through the air with unrelenting force.

The shadow let out a guttural cry as Dae-hyon's sword struck true, its form shattering into a cascade of dark energy.

As the fragments of the shadow dissolved into the air, the whispers returned, softer now, almost mournful. The obelisk's glow began to fade, and the cavern grew eerily silent once more.

Dae-hyon dropped to one knee, panting heavily as he stared at the spot where the shadow had stood. Eryon limped over to him, its golden eyes filled with concern.

"It's over," Dae-hyon muttered, though he wasn't entirely sure he believed it.

But as he looked back at the obelisk, its surface now dark and lifeless, he couldn't shake the feeling that the battle was far from over.

The silence that followed the battle was oppressive, pressing down on Dae-hyon and Eryon like a weight. The obelisk stood dormant now, its surface a lifeless black, but the air still thrummed faintly with the echoes of its dark energy.

Dae-hyon rose to his feet, his body aching from the fight. He wiped a streak of blood from his cheek, his grip tightening on the hilt of his sword. The shadow's words echoed in his mind: You can't escape what you are.

"What did it mean?" he muttered, his voice barely audible in the vast cavern.

Eryon nudged him gently, its golden eyes steady and reassuring. Despite the beast's wounds, it remained vigilant, its ears flicking as it scanned the cavern for any signs of further danger.

Dae-hyon sighed, his free hand resting on Eryon's thick fur. "At least we're still standing," he said softly. "But this place... it feels wrong, like it's alive."

The faint shimmer on the surface of the water rippled as if in response to his words. Dae-hyon frowned, his gaze shifting back to the obelisk. Though it appeared dormant, he couldn't shake the feeling that it was watching him, waiting for something.

He approached it cautiously, each step sending faint ripples across the water. The whispers had faded, but an uneasy hum lingered in the air, vibrating in his chest.

"What are you hiding?" he asked the obelisk, his voice firm.

As if in answer, a faint glow began to emanate from its surface, spreading like veins of light through the black stone. Dae-hyon instinctively stepped back, his sword raised, but the obelisk didn't react aggressively. Instead, the glow coalesced into a single point near its base, forming a small, circular indentation.

Dae-hyon crouched to examine it, his fingers brushing the edge of the indentation. It was smooth and cold to the touch, and he noticed faint runes carved around it, their meaning unfamiliar.

"What do you think, Eryon?" he asked, glancing at the beast.

Eryon growled softly, its gaze fixed on the obelisk. The beast's body was tense, its fur bristling slightly, but it didn't move to stop Dae-hyon.

Taking a deep breath, Dae-hyon reached into his satchel, searching for the strange artifact the Keeper had given him before his descent. It was a small, crystalline shard, its surface etched with similar runes.

The moment he brought it close to the obelisk, the glow intensified, bathing the cavern in an eerie light. The shard seemed to resonate with the obelisk, vibrating faintly in his hand.

"Here goes nothing," Dae-hyon murmured, fitting the shard into the indentation.

The reaction was immediate. The obelisk pulsed with a blinding light, and the ground beneath him trembled violently. Dae-hyon staggered back, shielding his eyes as the cavern filled with a deafening hum.

Eryon let out a low growl, positioning itself protectively in front of Dae-hyon. The beast's golden eyes glowed brightly, its body crackling with energy as it prepared for whatever was coming.

When the light finally subsided, Dae-hyon lowered his arm, his eyes widening in shock.

The obelisk had transformed. Where once it had been a solid, imposing structure, it now appeared translucent, its surface swirling with vibrant colors like the surface of a starry sky. And at its center, suspended in the glowing void, was a figure.

It was a woman, her form ethereal and otherworldly. Her hair flowed like liquid silver, and her eyes glowed with an intense, piercing light. She was clad in flowing robes that shimmered like the surface of a calm sea, and her presence exuded an overwhelming sense of power.

"Dae-hyon," she said, her voice echoing through the cavern. It was both soft and commanding, carrying a weight that made his knees weaken.

"Who... who are you?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"I am what remains of the Guardian of the Abyss," she replied. "And you, Tamer, have awakened the final path."

Her words sent a chill down his spine. "The final path? What does that mean?"

The Guardian's gaze softened, though her expression remained grave. "You have walked this far, guided by the Keeper of Beasts. But this is only the beginning. The trials you have faced were but shadows of the true battle that lies ahead."

Dae-hyon felt his chest tighten. "The true battle?"

The Guardian raised a hand, and the cavern seemed to shift around them, the walls dissolving into a swirling void of stars and darkness. Images flickered within the void — a towering beast, its eyes burning with unholy fire; a landscape consumed by chaos and destruction; and at the center of it all, a lone figure standing against the storm.

"The fate of all realms rests on your shoulders," the Guardian said. "The beasts are not merely your allies. They are the bridge between worlds, the key to restoring balance or unleashing ruin. You must master them, Dae-hyon. Only then will you have the strength to face what is coming."

Her words hung heavily in the air, and Dae-hyon felt the weight of them settle on his shoulders. He had always known his journey was leading him somewhere, but this... this was more than he had ever imagined.

"I don't know if I'm ready," he admitted, his voice barely audible.

The Guardian's gaze hardened. "You must be. Time is short, and the storm approaches. The choices you make now will determine the fate of all."

Before he could respond, the Guardian raised her other hand, and the shard in the obelisk began to glow once more. The light enveloped her form, and her voice echoed one final time:

"Seek the Keeper. She will guide you. But beware, Tamer — not all paths lead to salvation."

The light intensified, forcing Dae-hyon to shield his eyes once more. When it faded, the Guardian was gone, and the obelisk stood silent and lifeless once again.

Dae-hyon stood in stunned silence, his mind racing with the weight of what he had just learned. Eryon nudged him gently, breaking him from his thoughts.

"Looks like we're not done yet," he said softly, his hand resting on the beast's head.

With a deep breath, he turned away from the obelisk, his resolve hardening. Whatever lay ahead, he would face it head-on. The storm was coming, and he would be ready.

The cavern was quiet now, save for the distant echo of water dripping from the stalactites above. Dae-hyon stood at the foot of the now dormant obelisk, his mind reeling from the revelation. The words of the Guardian reverberated in his chest, a constant reminder of the weight he carried.

"Not all paths lead to salvation…" he murmured under his breath, his eyes scanning the cavern as if the very stone walls held the answers he sought. But there were no more answers here.

He turned to Eryon, who was still on high alert, its eyes flicking between Dae-hyon and the surrounding darkness. The beast's instincts were sharp, and the unease that radiated from it only confirmed Dae-hyon's own growing sense of dread.

"I need to find the Keeper," he said, more to himself than to the beast. "But where? How do we find her?"

The thought of the Keeper stirred a memory in him—the cryptic words she had spoken before he left the village: The path will find you, when the time comes.

Dae-hyon clenched his fist around the hilt of his sword. He was beginning to understand that every decision, every step he took, was leading him toward something far greater than he could have anticipated.

"We'll find her," he said, determination settling in his voice. "Somehow, we'll find her."

Eryon growled softly, as if in agreement, its large body shifting and ready for whatever lay ahead.

With one final glance at the obelisk, Dae-hyon turned and began the long trek out of the cavern. The journey back through the caves seemed endless, each winding passage more claustrophobic than the last. The atmosphere felt thick with something he couldn't explain, like the very air itself was holding its breath.

As they emerged from the dark depths, the moonlight bathed the rocky terrain in pale silver, casting long shadows across the land. The storm had passed, but Dae-hyon knew another, far darker storm was brewing on the horizon.

Eryon led the way, its eyes locked on the distant horizon. Despite the danger that loomed, there was a quiet calm in the beast's movements, as if it too had accepted its role in the events to come.

"Eryon," Dae-hyon said, his voice low and thoughtful. "I never asked you… why are you so devoted to me?"

The beast turned to look at him, its expression unreadable. It lowered its head, brushing its fur against Dae-hyon's leg in a gesture of affection. Dae-hyon smiled faintly, though the heaviness of the moment lingered.

"You don't have to answer," he murmured. "I think I understand now."

The beast's bond with him was more than just one of loyalty or duty—it was forged in something deeper, something ancient. The creatures that had once been wild, untamable, now walked by his side, ready to face whatever came next.

As they walked through the night, Dae-hyon's thoughts were consumed with the future—what he had learned, what he still needed to learn. The Keeper was the next step, the next piece of the puzzle, and he had to find her.

But finding her would not be easy. His journey was about to take him further from everything he knew, deeper into a world that was hidden beneath layers of mystery, danger, and forgotten truths.

They traveled for days, crossing barren fields and forests dense with trees. Dae-hyon rarely spoke, his focus on the path ahead. Eryon remained steadfast by his side, its watchful eyes scanning the surroundings.

One evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, Dae-hyon spotted something in the distance—a figure standing alone by the edge of a cliff.

It was a woman.

She stood perfectly still, her long cloak billowing in the wind, her hair a cascade of silver that caught the last rays of daylight. Her back was turned to him, but Dae-hyon could sense that she knew he was there.

He halted, instinctively gripping the sword at his side. "Who are you?" he called out.

The woman did not turn, but her voice, calm and soothing, carried across the distance. "I am the Keeper of Beasts, and I've been waiting for you."

Dae-hyon's heart skipped a beat. This was her—the one he had been searching for.

"I've come to find you," he said, stepping closer. "I need your guidance."

The Keeper slowly turned to face him, and for the first time, Dae-hyon saw her eyes—bright, piercing, full of ancient knowledge. They seemed to look right through him, as if she had already seen every choice he would make, every mistake he would fall prey to.

"You are not the first to seek me out, Tamer," she said, her voice like the wind whispering through the trees. "And you will not be the last. But there is little time."

Dae-hyon took a step forward, his determination swelling within him. "I'm ready," he said. "I don't know what's coming, but I have to be ready."

The Keeper's lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. "We shall see, Tamer. We shall see."

With that, she extended her hand toward him, and the earth beneath their feet trembled. The wind howled around them, and a sense of foreboding washed over Dae-hyon. The Keeper's gaze remained fixed on him, her expression unreadable.

Dae-hyon stepped forward, placing his hand in hers, and the world around them seemed to shift. The landscape blurred, and for a brief moment, he felt as though he was falling—through time, through space, through the very fabric of reality itself.

When he blinked, the world had changed.

They were no longer standing on the cliff, but in a vast, darkened hall. Strange creatures with eyes like molten lava circled around them, their movements fluid and purposeful. Their presence felt like a storm ready to break, each step filled with an energy that vibrated in Dae-hyon's bones.

"You've made it, Tamer," the Keeper said, her voice now a part of the very air. "But the journey is far from over."

And in that moment, Dae-hyon realized that everything he had known was about to change.

Dae-hyon's breath caught in his throat as he surveyed his new surroundings. The dark hall stretched endlessly in every direction, its high ceilings disappearing into shadow. Strange symbols etched into the stone walls glowed faintly, casting an eerie light over the vast space. The creatures circling around him were no longer just shadowy forms; now, their features were unmistakable—beasts of immense size, with eyes that burned like molten lava, their fur glimmering with an unnatural sheen.

Eryon stood beside him, its posture rigid, eyes locked onto the creatures. The air hummed with energy, and Dae-hyon could feel the weight of the moment bearing down on him. He instinctively placed a hand on Eryon's back, drawing strength from their bond.

The Keeper of Beasts stepped forward, her eyes glowing with an otherworldly light. "You have crossed the threshold now, Tamer," she said, her voice echoing throughout the hall. "This place is the heart of all that lives, and all that will come."

"What is this place?" Dae-hyon asked, his voice steady despite the unsettling atmosphere.

"This is the Nexus," the Keeper replied. "Where all the paths converge. It is a place of great power and danger, where time and fate intertwine. And here, you will learn the true cost of your role."

Dae-hyon's heart raced. He had heard whispers of the Nexus—stories told in hushed tones by the elders of his village. It was said to be a realm where the boundaries of reality were blurred, a place where the very fabric of existence could be unraveled.

"You speak of a cost," Dae-hyon said, his voice tinged with caution. "What do you mean?"

The Keeper's gaze softened, though her eyes still held that knowing, ancient quality. "To tame the beasts, you must understand them, not just in body but in spirit. The creatures that follow you are bound to you in ways that go beyond loyalty. They are a part of you, and you are a part of them. But this bond comes at a price."

Dae-hyon clenched his fists, trying to push away the dread that bubbled up inside him. "I'm ready to face whatever comes," he said firmly.

The Keeper tilted her head slightly, as if measuring his resolve. "You think you are," she murmured, "but every path has its shadows, Tamer. Every choice you make here will echo through the realms. And sometimes, the shadows are not as easy to see."

A chill swept through Dae-hyon, the weight of her words pressing against his chest. But he couldn't turn back. He couldn't ignore the call to understand the beasts, to protect the world from the darkness that threatened to consume it.

"Then what must I do?" he asked, determination lacing his voice.

The Keeper extended her hand, and in that moment, the creatures surrounding them paused, their eyes fixed on her. Slowly, one by one, they circled Dae-hyon, their presence overwhelming. The air felt thick, charged with energy.

"The time has come," she said. "You will enter the trial of the beasts. There, you will confront your deepest fears, your greatest weaknesses. You must face the shadows that lie within you, Tamer, for only by understanding them can you truly tame the beasts."

Dae-hyon's heart pounded in his chest. "What kind of trial?"

"The trial of the heart," the Keeper said softly. "The trial that will show you the truth of who you are—and the price of the power you wield."

As she spoke, the ground beneath Dae-hyon trembled, and a circle of light appeared at his feet, glowing with an ethereal intensity. The creatures around him stepped back, forming a protective ring, their eyes unwavering.

"This is where your true journey begins," the Keeper intoned. "You must step into the circle, and there, the trial will begin. The fate of the beasts—and your own fate—lies within your hands."

Dae-hyon hesitated only for a moment before he nodded. He could feel the weight of the choice before him, but there was no turning back. He stepped forward, into the circle of light.

The world around him shifted instantly. The hall, the creatures, the Keeper—all faded into darkness. Dae-hyon found himself standing in an unfamiliar forest, the air thick with mist. Tall trees loomed overhead, their branches twisting like skeletal fingers, casting long shadows across the ground.

Eryon was gone. The creatures were gone. Only the silence remained, oppressive and all-encompassing.

He called out, but his voice was swallowed by the dense fog. "Keeper!"

No answer.

The weight of isolation pressed in on him. He knew he was not alone, but there was something in the air—something lurking just out of sight, watching him, waiting.

A rustling sound came from behind him. He spun around, drawing his sword, but there was nothing there. His grip tightened on the hilt, sweat beading on his forehead.

Then, the ground beneath his feet shifted. A shape appeared from the shadows—tall, shadowy, and indistinct at first, but slowly becoming clearer. It was a figure, cloaked in darkness, its eyes glowing red.

"You are not the first," the figure's voice rasped. "But you will be the last."

Dae-hyon's heart clenched. The figure stepped closer, and with each step, the air grew colder, heavier. The figure's form seemed to shift, as if made of smoke and nightmares, but its presence was undeniable. It radiated power—power that was both familiar and terrifying.

"You think you can control the beasts," the figure hissed. "But you are the beast. You always have been."

Dae-hyon's breath quickened. "Who are you?"

The figure chuckled softly, its voice echoing through the fog. "I am the shadow you refuse to face. The truth you deny. You cannot tame what is already inside you."

The ground beneath Dae-hyon's feet trembled again, and in the distance, he heard the sound of roaring beasts—familiar, but filled with malice.

The trial had begun. And in this moment, Dae-hyon realized that the greatest battle would not be against the creatures of the world, but against the darkness within himself.

And the question remained: Would he conquer it, or would it destroy him?
