Chapter 176: Chapter 94: On the Road (2 / 2)

The man glared at Master Yicheng with a vengeful expression, his eyes filled with malice. "I died in a car accident. A big truck hit me and sent me flying, even my head was taken by wild dogs. I couldn't find my body, and I couldn't find the ghost road either. So now, give me the woman beside you. Let her accompany me to join the Yin Soldiers."

"Amidahabha..." Master Yicheng's expression gradually turned stern. He took the Buddha beads from around his neck and gripped them tightly in his hand. "In your past life, you were a highway robber, causing the deaths of countless travelers. This is why in this life, you have been torn apart and fed to wild dogs. You do not understand the law of cause and effect, yet you continue to harm others. I cannot allow you to stay!" With that, Master Yicheng swung the Buddha beads, striking the man and woman.

A flash of light appeared, and the man screamed in agony. A ball of green fire appeared before them, swirling around, about to flee. But Master Yicheng quickly closed the distance, chanting a series of obscure syllables that sounded like the roar of a furious lion.

"Gate to hell, gate to hell, gone to hell, all the suffering, gone beyond the world, I see the light of Bodhisattva," Master Yicheng recited.

Jiang Shiyu blinked, and in a flash, the man and woman vanished, leaving only a paper effigy that resembled the woman standing in their place. She swallowed nervously and asked, "Master Yicheng, what just happened?"

Master Yicheng explained that the man was a ghost from a car accident. He had a marriage engagement in his life but never married, so his unfulfilled wish kept him wandering as a ghost. The paper effigy was an offering from his family, but it was inadequate in his eyes. He wanted a living soul. When he encountered Jiang Shiyu, her pure Yin body attracted him, and he intended to harm her and take her soul.

When he asked, "Can I ask for directions?" Jiang Shiyu had unwittingly responded. By doing so, she had unknowingly entered the ghost path, and this allowed the ghost to follow her and try to take her life. Master Yicheng advised that if one encounters such a situation, it's best not to respond or engage in conversation. Men should say, "Ask your mother!" and women should tell them to "Get lost." Never talk back.

Jiang Shiyu felt a wave of fear wash over her. Looking at Master Yicheng, she couldn't help but wonder what was truly going through his mind. Despite his seemingly calm and handsome exterior, he remained enigmatic, yet it was clear he genuinely cared for her.

After dealing with the ghost, Master Yicheng removed the Buddha beads from his neck and placed them around Jiang Shiyu's neck. She didn't refuse the gesture, although she was unsure why he did it. Master Yicheng simply told her to stay behind him as they continued their journey.

The dark night was eerily quiet. There were no sounds of insects, and the stars filled the sky, yet the moon was absent. The yellowish dirt road stretched on, winding endlessly. The two of them walked briskly, covering a five-kilometer stretch in almost an hour.

As they neared the suburbs, the night had grown late, and this area was not a big city. After 10 PM, it was rare to see anyone on the streets. They walked along, hoping to find a taxi, but suddenly, they noticed a large, strange man running past them.

The man's appearance was bizarre—he was about 1.7 meters tall with a swollen belly that looked like a seven-month-pregnant woman. However, his neck was unusually thin and long, and his head was disproportionately large, giving him an almost deformed appearance.

Jiang Shiyu had no idea where he had come from, but she heard him gasping for air as he ran, muttering, "I'm so hungry, so hungry... where's a restaurant open?"

Master Yicheng spoke in a calm voice, "Don't pay him any mind. We continue our journey."

But just as Jiang Shiyu was about to reply, the man turned around. His head twisted 180 degrees, his large mouth opening unnaturally wide. The voice that came from his throat was raspy and hollow, "Do you have anything to eat? I'm starving."

Jiang Shiyu realized she had encountered a ghost. She dared not speak, glancing at Master Yicheng for guidance. He nodded slightly, then advanced toward the man. Without hesitation, he thrust his fist into the man's mouth and said, "If you're hungry, then eat me!"

"Thank you, thank you," the man muttered, and with a grotesque gulp, he bit down. Jiang Shiyu gasped in terror, her heart pounding. She shrieked in horror when the man's stomach exploded. A disgusting mix of sanitary napkins, rags, old shoes, scraps of paper, rotten meat, and filthy liquids spilled out, but strangely, there was no blood.

The streetlights began to flicker, and a few loud popping sounds followed by the distinct smell of burning filled the air. The nearby transformer exploded, sending thick smoke into the sky, plunging the street into darkness.

Jiang Shiyu felt a chill run down her spine. Suddenly, the wind began to pick up, swirling dust around them. Master Yicheng stopped in his tracks, sitting cross-legged. He turned to Jiang Shiyu and said, "Sit with me and chant. No matter what you see, do not speak, and do not interfere with me."
