System: Sins of the Dead

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: The Judge That Watches the Flame

> "When a flame refuses to die, we do not reason with it."

"We send the Judge."

— System Protocol 09-B: Rebellion Response

SYSTEM ADMIN ZONE – STRATUM 0

Far above the layers Kai had burned through, the System Council stood in silence.

They wore no faces.

They spoke in frequencies, not voices.

They didn't argue.

Because something had happened that was supposed to be impossible.

> The Ashwalker still lived.

---

One of the Admins extended a hand.

Its fingers were made of clockwork and bone.

It pressed a symbol into the void:

> 🜏

And the space between layers ripped open.

From it, something stepped out.

Ten feet tall.

Wearing judge's robes sewn from system logs and user contracts.

Its head was an inverted hourglass.

Sand trickled upward.

And inside it—faces screamed silently, pressed against the glass.

---

> [SYSTEM RESPONSE ENTITY: THE JUDGE]

Title: Arbiter of Sin

Authority Level: ROOT+

Purpose: Eliminate Anomalous Survival

Law: "The fire must go out before the next trial begins."

---

"Find the Ashwalker," one Admin whispered.

"Erase his memory. Crush his soul. Clean the sin he chose to carry."

And the Judge nodded once.

Then vanished into the ashworlds.

ASH ZONE – HOURS LATER

I was on my knees again.

Not broken.

Training.

I'd fought two more Hollow Ones since the memory shard.

Won both.

But just barely.

The Unburned Core had awakened something in me.

Something new.

Each time I remembered what mattered, my flames grew stronger.

But they also hurt more.

It was like my soul was eating itself to stay awake.

---

Adrian's voice crackled through a static-smeared shard communicator I'd salvaged:

> "We're coming, Kai.

Harper found a gap.

Whatever this place is… it's not sealed anymore."

> "We're going to bring you back."

I didn't respond.

Not yet.

Not until I was strong enough to protect them this time.

---

Suddenly—

The ash turned cold.

The sky, if it could be called that, twisted in on itself.

And then...

A chime.

Clear.

Final.

Like judgment being passed in a cathedral of the damned.

I turned—

And saw it.

The Judge.

Standing silently on a black plateau.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

> [WARNING: YOU ARE BEING OBSERVED BY A SYSTEM ENTITY]

[Ashwalker Status: Not Recognized – Level: UNKNOWN]

[Defense Access: Denied]

ERROR: THIS ENEMY EXISTS OUTSIDE YOUR STORYLINE.

---

It raised one arm.

The sands in its hourglass head began to swirl.

Fast.

Violent.

And then—

It spoke.

A voice that tore through time and guilt:

> "You burned the throne.

You altered fate.

And now… the fire must be judged."
