Chapter 10: Chapter 10 – Into the Deep Vein
The ley-line nexus throbbed with restless power, the imprisoned heartbeat below pounding harder with every passing moment. Lin Xuan stood at the center, his silver aura flickering in rhythm with that subterranean pulse. Behind him, Zhang Wei, Mei Yan, and a bloodied Luo Jin gathered the surviving civilians, their eyes haunted by the siege's carnage.
"Above ground is lost," Lin Xuan said, his voice a low command. "The vanguard has marked this place. We move beneath the Vein, deeper than their scanners can reach."
Zhang Wei glanced toward the shadowed tunnel yawning at the far wall. "And what waits down there?"
Lin Xuan's lips curved faintly. "Power. Chains. And your next tempering."
---
I. The Descent
They began the descent at dawn, a thin column of survivors winding through jagged tunnels lit only by the silver glow of Lin Xuan's aura. The air thickened as they descended, heavy with the raw tang of unrefined Primordial Qi.
Every step brought them closer to the source of the pulse. Whispers brushed the edges of Lin Xuan's senses — not words, but fragments of will, ancient and inexorable.
"…Closer… break… free me…"
Mei Yan shivered, glancing uneasily at Lin Xuan's back. "You hear that too, don't you?"
Lin Xuan didn't answer. His focus remained fixed on the pulse, on the chains of power that bound the entity below. What manner of being sleeps here that even the Eternal Shadows covet it?
After hours of descent, the tunnel opened into a vast subterranean expanse. A river of liquid light coursed through the cavern floor, illuminating colossal black monoliths that rose like the ribs of some long-dead titan.
"The Deep Vein," Lin Xuan said, voice carrying across the chamber. "The heart of this world's Primordial Qi."

II. Chains of the Forgotten
At the cavern's center loomed a titanic structure — a lattice of obsidian chains anchored into the bedrock, each link etched with runes that pulsed faintly in time with the heartbeat. Within, something vast and formless shifted, its outline indistinct but radiating a pressure that set Lin Xuan's teeth on edge.
Zhang Wei took an involuntary step back. "That… that thing's alive?"
"It has been for longer than your species has drawn breath," Lin Xuan replied, his voice soft, almost reverent. "And it is bound."
"…Heavenbreaker… these chains… forged by Shadows… break them…"
The whisper was stronger now, each word vibrating through Lin Xuan's bones. He approached the nearest chain, silver-lit fingers grazing its surface. The runes flared angrily, repelling his Qi in a burst of hostile energy.
Seals of the Eternal Shadows, he realized, eyes narrowing. Powerful… but not inviolable.

III. The Champion Descends
A ripple of danger shivered through the Codex's expanded senses. Lin Xuan turned sharply, silver eyes narrowing.
"They've found us."
A tremor shook the cavern as something massive descended through the tunnels above. When it emerged, the survivors recoiled in terror. The creature that stepped into the light was no ordinary vanguard soldier — it was a towering figure clad in living black armor, its form almost humanoid, but its eyes burned with the cold, violet flame of the Eternal Shadows.
A spear crackling with void energy extended from its gauntleted hand.
Lin Xuan stepped forward, his silver aura flaring. "A champion."
The figure spoke, its voice a chorus of distorted tones: "Heavenbreaker. Your Path ends here."
---
IV. Duel Beneath the Earth
The champion moved first, its spear lancing out in a blur of violet light. Lin Xuan met it with the Heaven-Sundering Palm, silver Qi colliding with void energy in a shockwave that shattered stone pillars and sent cracks spiderwebbing through the cavern floor.
They clashed in a storm of light and sound, Lin Xuan's movements precise and fluid, the Heavenbreaker Path devouring each surge of hostile energy and feeding it back into his strikes. The champion fought with ruthless efficiency, each blow backed by the raw might of the Eternal Shadows.
Zhang Wei, Mei Yan, and Luo Jin herded the civilians to the far side of the cavern, forced to shield their eyes against the blinding brilliance of the duel.
"Can he… can he win?" Mei Yan whispered, voice trembling.
Zhang Wei's gaze never left Lin Xuan's silver-lit form. "He has to."
---
V. Breaking the Spear
The champion lunged, spear thrusting in a killing strike. Lin Xuan twisted aside, his palm tracing a spiral in the air. Silver Qi condensed into a razor-thin edge, slicing cleanly through the weapon's haft.
Before the champion could recover, Lin Xuan's other palm struck its chest in a Heaven-Sundering blow that tore through armor and sent the figure skidding backward across the cavern floor.
The champion rose slowly, a gaping hole smoking in its breastplate, but its violet eyes burned hotter than ever. It raised its shattered weapon in a defiant salute, then dissolved into a mist of violet light that faded into the air.

VI. The Whisper's Bargain
As silence returned, the whisper roared in Lin Xuan's mind, jubilant and hungry.
"…Break the chains… and my heart is yours… together, we shatter the Shadows…"
Lin Xuan regarded the bound entity, his expression unreadable. "You offer power freely?"
"…Not freely. My heart for my freedom. You will wield it, and I will be unbound."
Lin Xuan turned away, silver aura fading. "When the time comes, I will decide."
The whisper subsided, leaving only the steady pulse of the heartbeat beneath the chains.
---
VII. New Resolve
Lin Xuan faced his disciples. "You have seen the Shadows' true strength. The next wave will be stronger still."
Zhang Wei tightened his grip on his blade, the silver veins along his arms pulsing faintly. "Then we keep growing stronger."
Lin Xuan's lips curved into a faint, razor-edged smile. "Yes. From this moment, the Heavenbreaker Sect is forged in blood and shadow. Those who endure will rise; those who falter will be left behind."
He turned once more toward the chains. Soon. I will break you — and in doing so, ascend beyond the reach of all.
