Chapter 64: Snowfall
Chapter 64: Snowfall
Winter arrived out of the blue.
Jun and the girls hadn't had time to move all their things into the treehouse.
That morning, everyone stayed in the treehouse because they didn't want to get up.
Jun carefully opened the wooden window, which was tightly shut.
A cold gust of wind blew through the window, hitting the body and stabbing the bones.
"Cold..."
But the cold didn't just come from outside—it also began to creep in from within his heart.
In just one night, the whole grassland under the big tree turned into a white world covered in snow.
"Yukino, it's snowing!" Jun opened the wooden window.
It was over twenty meters high, and the cold wind was much harsher than on ground level.
"What the hell, Jun!"
Yukino jumped out from under the blanket and quickly closed the window.
"That was close..."
Yui almost froze from the cold wind that had just blown in through the window.
"Ugh... it's so cold."
Utaha immediately hugged Ginko, who was standing next to her, while Ginko held Nanako tightly, who was about to stand up.
The girls hugged each other to stay warm.
But even so, the cold still hurt their bones.
"Onii-chan, is it really snowing outside?"
Megumi stood up, wrapped herself in a bearskin coat, and hugged the dry straw she used as a blanket.
She and Yukino went to the window to look outside.
"The snow is huge..."
Megumi had never seen snow this big before.
This wasn't just "snow like goose feathers" anymore. Maybe it could be called "snow like eagle feathers"?
| Notice: "Snow like goose feathers" — soft, light, and graceful, falling gently like a drifting feather. It evokes a peaceful, romantic winter scene.
"Snow like eagle feathers" — still large, but heavier and rougher, falling with force. It hints at a harsher, more intense snowfall |
The snowflakes were big, but they weren't very dense.
She saw that their old ground-level hut was no longer visible—just a white mound in the distance, as the whole world had been transformed into a sea of white.
"This place... is very different from the world we used to know."
Yukino stretched out her hand and caught a large snowflake like a feather.
The snow quickly melted in her hand, turning into a drop of cold water.
"Luckily, the treehouse roof is strong enough."
The branches of the lamp tree helped hold some of the snow, but the roof still had a lot of weight to bear.
Jun touched the pile of snow at the edge of the window with his finger—it was quite thick. If this were a normal house, the roof might have already collapsed.
"Today, I really don't feel like getting up."
Utaha held Ginko more tightly.
"Ula... snow..."
But Nanako, who was being held by Ginko, had already gotten up.
Seeing the snowy scene outside only made her more excited.
"In the snow... there's game!"
She said this while pointing at the ground.
"Game?"
Jun looked at the snow-covered ground.
But all he could see was a white expanse; nothing else.
After thinking hard to find the right word, Nanako finally remembered.
"Rabbit? Snow rabbit?"
Jun looked again at the snow under the tree.
But it was too hard.
From a height of twenty meters, it was almost impossible to spot a snow rabbit hidden in such a white landscape.
But he saw something more than a rabbit.
"Reindeer?"
He saw a reindeer. But compared to the ones he knew, this one was bigger and had more fur.
"That's a herd of deer!" Nanako said this, her eyes sparkling.
In the original tribe, winter was the best time to hunt deer and rabbits. This was a tradition of the Dragonback tribe.
"Wow, there are so many snow deer!"
Yui wanted to stay lying down, but Yukino and Megumi had already gotten up, so Yui had to get up too.
She put on a bearskin coat and crawled off the floor.
"Snow deer?"
Jun was a bit confused by the terms.
"Yeah, they really like the snow," Yui explained.
"They have a good sense of when the weather is going to change and will move to areas with snow. They're calm, not aggressive, so they're great for hunting."
"With snow this thick, it's likely the ice cellar door is buried."
Jun looked at the meat left in the treehouse. It would probably only last for today.
It seemed he needed to go down, open the cellar, and bring back more meat.
As for hunting, maybe we can do it after the snow melts.
Straw clearly wasn't enough to protect against this kind of cold. He needed more animal hides.
Once the fireplace in the treehouse was lit, everyone finally started to feel warm.
They sat in a circle around a round table in the middle of the treehouse. They used the bear skin on the floor as a blanket to cover their feet while they waited for breakfast to be made.
Under the thick blanket, their feet got tangled together.
"Haaahh..." Ginko found Jun's foot under the blanket and hooked her foot around his.
Utaha was just as fast in finding the other foot. The two of them leaned against each other, trying to stay warm.
Megumi, knowing this would happen, had put her long legs between her brother's thighs from the start.
Her small toes absorbed all the warmth from Jun's inner thighs.
The girls' feet were very cold. Jun felt like all the warmth in his body was disappearing.
As Yui was about to put her feet in, she realized that the space under the blanket was too narrow.
She pouted and curled up her feet.
"Vegetable and meat soup is ready..."
Yukino brought a big bowl of meat soup to the middle of the room.
When she saw the shape of tangled feet under the blanket, her face didn't show any emotion, but her eyes clearly followed the girls' movements.
"After eating, don't forget to get meat from the underground storage."
Yukino sat beside Jun, not saying much.
As soon as they heard footsteps under the table, the small feet quickly separated.
"Ugh..."
Jun had just managed to warm the girls' feet, ready to enjoy that cozy moment, but they had all pulled their feet back.
He felt a bit disappointed and looked over at Yukino, who was sitting next to him. Then, without saying anything, he put his hand on her thigh.
Yukino almost choked on her food when she was surprised by the sudden move.
She looked at Jun from the corner of her eye, but she didn't push his hand away.
It was a small way of getting back at them for earlier.
After breakfast, Jun grabbed his bow and backpack and started to climb down the big tree.
The old vine ladder had been replaced with a sturdier wooden one. But there was a lot of snow on top of it.
Jun had to be very careful when he climbed the ladder.
For a moment, he thought about using Enhance skill to make his body attributes stable and just jump down from the tree.
But remembering the side effects from before when carrying the giant bear, he quickly gave up on that idea.
It's better to be safe than sorry.
Jun's footsteps made soft sounds on the snow as he walked, wearing his bearskin boots.
He looked at the white world around him and, for a moment, he lost focus.
