Chapter 709: The Queen's order

While Nox was evolving his pets and slowly increasing his strength, in Eve's manor, a portal appeared out of thin air.

A slightly stunned expression appeared on Eve's face.

From the portal, three women—whose beauty was capable of toppling kingdoms—stepped out. They were all dressed in slim-fitting black gowns with witch hats on their heads.

'What are they doing here?' A hostile look appeared on her face as she saw the figures.

"How have you been, Eve?" the first woman, a white-haired beauty in the lead, said, displaying a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

Instead of replying, Eve asked, her eyes narrowed, "What are you doing here?"

"That's not a nice way to greet your sisters," the mysterious woman smiled and added in a slightly deep voice. "Especially ones you haven't seen in years."

"Could it be sister doesn't miss us as we do?" another one spoke, sounding hurt and betrayed.

Eve's expression remained impassive. Despite the three beauties addressing her as sisters, it was quite easy for an observer to see that she didn't consider them as such.

"If you three don't have anything important to say, do yourself a favour and leave this place." She turned around and began to walk away. "Else, I'll be forced to make you."

"Tsk, not fun."

"Yeah, she's just as grumpy as before."

Eve heard the whispers behind her. However, she paid them no attention and proceeded to leave.

Before she could step out of the room, the leader—the white-haired lady—spoke.

"Wait, don't go. The Queen sent us."

Eve halted in her steps and turned around, her expression growing more serious.

The first woman, who seemed to be the leader of the three, clicked her tongue at how easy it was to get Eve's attention.

"A few weeks back, one of our own sent a request for help to the Lich Court," she began. "You might've encountered her a few times—her name is Bridget."

Bridget… the headmistress of the Royal Vermilion Academy? Of course she knew this person—and had almost killed her when they encountered each other back in the capital.

"So she's a member of the Lich Court?" Eve muttered. All this while, she had thought Bridget was a rogue necromancer who had perfectly kept her identity a secret.

"Yes, she is. In fact, a very devoted member."

"Hmm, I see," Eve replied and muttered under her breath, barely audible. "Good thing I didn't kill her."

Meanwhile, the white-haired woman continued, a small smirk playing on her lips—clearly having heard Eve's muttering.

"Bridget has formally submitted a request to the Queen," the woman said. "She's asking for aid… to drive the demons out of the Vermilion Kingdom."

"Sometimes I wonder what side the Lich Court is even on," Eve muttered coldly, her arms folded as she stared them down.

The white-haired woman tilted her head. "We don't really like the humans because they despise us. However, at the same time, they're equally important to us… they're important to the Queen."

"What's in it for the Lich Court?" Eve asked moments later. The Court wasn't benevolent. There was a reason for everything they did—and a gain to be made.

"Nothing," the white-haired woman replied.

Eve frowned. A cold chuckle escaped her lips. "Then you're lying."

"I know the Court," she continued. "It never moves without gain. If there's truly 'nothing' to gain, then I want no part of it."

The three witches looked at each other in silence.

"Besides, I already decided to help the humans on my own… so the Court won't take credit for my actions," Eve finished.

The white-haired woman's smile faded slightly. "You would act... without the Queen's blessing?"

"I don't need her blessing," Eve replied coldly. "Bridget made her plea. If I decide to lift a finger, it'll be because I chose to. Not because your Court begged for me."

"You're dismissed."

The witches glared but said nothing. One by one, they stepped back through the portal without another word.

When they were gone, Eve exhaled slowly and muttered, "The Court still thinks it controls me. Fools."

Then she looked out of her window toward the Cromwell mansion, where she could see Nox.

"Sooner or later, they'll approach him as well." Her eyes flashed. However, it was not in her place to stop them from meeting… even if she wanted to, there was no way she could stop the Lich Court—who were even more powerful and troublesome than the demons.

"I just hope they don't end up enemies," she mumbled to herself.

---

Meanwhile, behind the Cromwell mansion—

Nox admired the rock giant with a pleased smile on his face.

"This one would make a good tank on the war front," one of those present whistled.

"And I thought those giants that showed up in the Barony were huge," another commented, eyes glowing. "This thing is on a whole different level."

Nox imagined the Mountain Sovereign standing right in the middle of the demonic army… its enormous frame absorbing spells and sword strikes like a mountain while its fists pounded monsters and demons into oblivion. Just the image alone brought a surge of anticipation to his blood.

It was odd to say, but right now, Nox wished the demons were around so he could test out the beast's skills.

"With Mountain Sovereign on the frontlines, the demons would hesitate to charge," Nox muttered. It was the perfect weapon to strike fear in the hearts of his enemies.

Some time later, Nox returned the giant rock golem back to the taming space and purchased yet another evolution ticket, bringing his total to 230.

When the portal appeared, the pet that came through this time was the baby blue python.
