Chapter 698: The Truth

"Heaven are those."

The Awakened back in the Cromwell's Barony were speechless when they saw a sea of demons approaching them.

The scouting team, which was comprised mostly of ants and the dragons, had reported that hundreds of thousands of demons were heading this way.

At first, they didn't want to believe it, but now that they were seeing it for themselves, their blood ran cold.

"This... this is the end!" shouted a panicky soldier. "We can't face that many enemies!"

"Not even the dragons could save us now!"

"This... this is...who would have thought news would reach them so fast." Nathan's eyes flashed. He was currently on the walls watching the approaching army with a complicated gaze.

Beside him were the others, including Prince Adrian.

"Should we wake Nox now?" Nyx asked.

At that moment, Adrian spoke up. "Do you think something happened to him? I mean, he said he transferred his consciousness to the capital. At least the best he could have done was tell us the demon army was heading this way."

"I just checked on him," replied Aina. "He's perfectly okay, just unconscious."

"Either way," Nathan's expression grew more serious, and in a loud booming voice, he said, "Tell the dragon riders, the ants, the Vermilion soldiers, and the Awakened of the barony to prepare to engage the enemy!"

"Yes, Baron!"

Instantly, the likes of Adrian, Ria, Aina, Boris, Ant Queen, Ant King, and the others spread out to carry out the orders.

Nathan was the only one still standing there. He made a whistling sound with his mouth. Just some moments later, Doombringer arrived, flapping its wings, waiting for orders.

Nathan stared into the eyes of the wyvern, noticing that it was slowly becoming lifeless again. T*h-is- co.n$t^e%nt is ho$s+te!d* at M|!V.|L!E^M#PY+R-.

He quickly retrieved the elixir he had gotten in the capital and fed it. Instantly, the wyvern regained its intelligence.

Without a moment of hesitation, he mounted the wyvern and flew towards the outskirts of the town where soldiers were already gathered with their weapons ready to fight.

Meanwhile, in the distance, the demonic army drew closer. The archers on the barony walls pulled the strings of their bows, ready to fire, and the Awakened below gripped their weapons tightly.

None blinked and they stared at the approaching horde with bloodshot eyes. Adrian, Aina, Boris, Nyx, Jack, Theo, and Hans calmly stood in front of the humans.

Just standing there seemed to boost the morale of the soldiers behind.

Soon, the demons drew closer, and they finally had a clearer view of the lead figures.

"Eve." Aina narrowed her eyes when she saw the cold necromancer.

On the other hand, high up in the air, there was a complicated look on Nathan's face. Never did he think a day would come where he would be forced to fight someone like Eve who had helped build and protected the Cromwell Barony.

The woman who once shielded the Cromwell Barony with her dark magic, the one who kept the plague away, the one who shared battlefields with them... now stood on the enemy's side, her expression blank.

Regardless, he needed to cast all emotions aside.

Right now, she was an enemy, and she needed to be stopped. If not, everything they had built prior to now would all go to waste.

"Soldiers prepar—"

"Wait!" Even before he could finish his words, a familiar voice shouted from the walls. Everyone's gaze snapped toward that direction, their gaze settling on Nox who stood there in the company of Serena and Akira.

"She's not our enemy!" Nox's voice boomed across the battlefield. "So I advise you all to put your weapons down."

A hush whispered through the air.

"What do you mean?" Nathan frowned.

"Eve is an ally," Nox replied. "And the army behind her is also on our side."

Those words caused a ripple to spread among the human army.

"What did he just say…?"

"Did he just say Eve is… an ally?"

"Then what about the demons? Are we supposed to believe they're not here to kill us?"

"That has to be a lie… right?"

All this while, Eve maintained a stoic expression, choosing not to speak.

"What do you mean by that?" Adrian asked in an angry voice. This person had killed dozens of experts in the capital—how could Nox say she wasn't an enemy?

"He must have a good reason for this, let's listen to him," Aina said, her eyes never leaving Eve's.

Although Nox tried to convince the warriors to stop being so alert, they didn't listen and still held their weapons tightly, staring at the demons with hawk-like gazes.

Meanwhile, Eve was led to the large tent room where plans for the war were being held.

Now that everyone was seated, Nox cleared his throat and glanced at Eve. She was the best person to explain in this situation.

With a nod of her head, she rose to her feet, and everyone looked at her.

Their gazes held a mixture of hatred and confusion.

Hatred because so many had lost their lives because of her—

And confusion because every one of them wanted to know what happened to her.

Why did she suddenly turn her back against humanity?

The room was tense.

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke.

The only sound was the faint rustling of the tent's flaps in the wind and the distant noise of those outside.

Adrian tapped his fingers against the hilt of his sword, eyes locked onto Eve with barely contained anger. He was ready to strike at the slightest provocation. Even Boris was at the edge of his seat.

Only Aina seemed calm, though her brows were furrowed deeply.

Nathan, seated at the edge of the war table, watched with a complicated gaze.

"Well?" he finally said, staring at those ruby eyes. "Speak."

Eve slowly lifted her head, her crimson eyes meeting those seated at the table.

"I never betrayed humanity," she began...
