Chapter 674: The Smilling Blight Arrives

Skulky was staring at his mistress, Eve, those flickering green orb-like eyes shining in confusion.

They were currently standing on the roof of a towering building that overlooked the Royal Island.

Eve's expression was emotionless, and although it felt as if she was looking in the direction of the castle, her gaze was blank, only reflecting the ongoing battle in the distance.

The protective barrier was up, and an army of demons and members of the Flaming Rose were actively fighting to take it down, unaware that their main target had already fled the capital.

Skulky's orb-like eyes flickered between the chaos and that of his master, his thoughts unknown for a while.

After a moment of looking back and forth, he eventually spoke, a hint of hesitation in his voice.

"Mistress," the skeleton butler said, "if I may ask, why did you allow them to escape?"

Eve continued to stare into the distance.

Skulky looked at his mistress, the indifferent Fae, his mind racing with thousands of thoughts.

When the flying golden carriages had left, there hadn't been any powerful demons standing by. The reason for this was because Eve had requested to be the one to oversee the attack on the castle that day.

Yet even after seeing the carriage move, she had not even made an attempt to chase it or order the demons with flying capabilities to go after it.

Rather, she had done something even more surprising.

His mistress, Eve, had actually provided a distraction, stalling the demons long enough for the carriages to leave the castle's atmosphere.

The mission from the Demon Emperor had been to conquer the Human Domain, and the emperor had sent his children to every kingdom within it.

Eve was one of the few born from the Emperor's true consort—making her royalty in every sense.

So why… why was she defying the mission?

Skulky's eyes flicked. Could it be she was going against the Demon Emperor?

"Mistress," Skulky repeated, a hint of urgency in his raspy voice. "If this is discovered, the other royal siblings will accuse you of treason. You gave them a chance to run."

Eve blinked slowly, her lips parting for the first time in minutes. "Yes."

"…Yes?" Skulky tilted his skull. "Forgive me, Mistress, but I don't understand."

There was silence. Eve's raven hair fluttered in the wind, her beautiful ruby eyes glinting ominously.

"For standing this long, he has proved himself."

Skulky gulped—or at least made the noise of it—he didn't have a throat. "Y-you want him to grow stronger?"

"That's exactly the point." Eve's eyes glinted as she slowly turned to her butler. "Tell me, Skulky… have you ever seen a beast fight harder than when it's cornered?"

"I… suppose not."

"Then imagine what happens when you release it."

A chill swept across the rooftop—not from the wind, but from her words.

She continued walking toward the edge. "With him heading west, they'll make a great duo then." She clenched her fist. "Maybe... just maybe, with their combined efforts, I'll be able to realize all my plans."

'So she finally decided, huh.' Skulky sighed in her heart. 'Should have known when she left that letter behind.'

Suddenly, Eve called out. "Skulky. Tell the demons to continue the siege."

"Yes, Mistress."

"I'll go greet our uninvited guest."

'Right, after he didn't show up, I almost forgot about him.' Skulky thought. 'So he finally arrived. Well, it's too late.'

---

Some time later, Eve arrived in front of a luxurious mansion. It had once belonged to the Silver Family but was now being used as a temporary base for the duration of the mission.

In front of the gate stood powerful demon guards. As soon as they sensed her presence, they all bowed immediately, showing their respect.

Step! Step!

Eve walked past them, not even sparing a glance. To her, their existence was no different from that of ants.

Through the long hallways, she finally arrived at a giant door.

Even from the hallway, the weight of the aura pressing against her skin made Eve tighten her expression. It was familiar... and overpowering.

This person… this person on the other side was just as strong as her… if not more.

And to Eve, he would be her biggest headache—and had the greatest potential to ruin her plans.

With a determined gleam in her eyes, she slowly pushed the door open, revealing a grand room with golden details on the walls.

However, none of that mattered at the moment because a single person had managed to snatch all the attention without even trying.

On the large throne-like chair, which used to belong to the head of the Silver Family, a strikingly beautiful man sat—his back resting lazily against the cushion, and his legs placed carelessly on the table.

The man appeared to be in his mid-twenties. He had shoulder-length hair that shimmered with a faint crimson hue.

He was wearing a high-collared, noble-style black coat adorned with golden stitched runes and a red cravat.

As soon as Eve stepped inside, the smile on his face brightened.

"Noir," Eve spoke, her voice devoid of any trace of warmth.

"My little sister… it's been a while," said Noir—a demon nicknamed The Smiling Blight and the third strongest of the Demon Emperor's children.

Noir had a beautiful smile on his face. His eyes were unblinking. They had remained that way for as long as Eve could remember.

"You came late."

"Oh, about that. I was supposed to arrive weeks ago, but some things happened," he replied, then smiled wider. "But now that I'm here, don't worry, I'll help you take over the castle."

"No need. I already have everything under control."

"Control, you say?" Noir walked up to the window and pulled the giant curtain aside, revealing the demons still trying to take down the barrier.

Eve's eyes flashed, but she didn't say anything.

"Little sister," Noir called softly as he approached and slowly caressed Eve's face. "You don't need to feel embarrassed."

"I'm not!" Eve said, smacking Noir's cold arm away from her face. "And stop treating me like a child."

"Oof. Technically, you are." Noir chuckled, his voice strangely pleasant. "How old are you? Not even up to 100. On the other hand, my thousandth-year birthday is just around the corner."

"So I thought, why not celebrate it with my favorite sibling while we watch the humans burn?"

As he said this, the reflection of a burning city—with humans, adults and children alike screaming for help—danced in his eyes.

When Eve saw this, even her indifferent facade cracked. A look of concern appeared on her face.

'Why does it have to be him of all people?' she thought, a rare cold shiver passing through her spine.
