Supergirl Defender Of Love

Chapter 11: Is That Supposed To Be A Villain

The sun was shining, the air smelled like roasted hot dogs and overpriced festival snacks, and Kara Zor-El was thrilled.

For the first time since arriving in this bizarre alternate universe, she was getting a proper taste of "normal life." No killer robots. No alien warlords. No dimensional breaches spilling shadow demons into the sky.

Just food stalls, balloons, and a bunch of happy humans enjoying their Unity Day Festival.

Kara leaned over the railing of a viewing platform, taking in the scene. "God, this is amazing," she whispered in awe. "Everything's not on fire."

Beside her, Natasha Romanoff—S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top agent and, in Kara's mind, her self-appointed bodyguard-slash-mom-friend—sighed. "Your home sounds like a nightmare."

"It was," Kara agreed cheerfully. "But you get used to it after the third planetary invasion. Sometimes you don't even put your coffee down."

Natasha gave her a sidelong glance but didn't argue. She was too busy scanning the crowd like a hawk, tension etched into her every muscle. Kara had noticed that Natasha was always like this—watchful, alert, like she was expecting someone to jump out with a bazooka at any moment.

To be fair, this was Marvel Earth. That could actually happen.

Kara adjusted the sunglasses Natasha had shoved onto her face to "minimize recognition." She felt ridiculous. Did they really think a pair of shades would hide her when she was 5'9", built like a goddess, and glowing with alien vitality?

"Oh my god, they have churros," Kara gasped.

Natasha grabbed her wrist. "Stay close."

Kara pouted but followed, knowing Natasha's protective instincts would never let her wander freely. Not that Kara minded. It was kind of cute how the deadly assassin hovered over her like a concerned girlfriend.

Not that Kara would ever say that out loud. Natasha might actually stab her.

Unity Day was everything Kara had hoped it would be—until the sky exploded.

The first pumpkin bomb hit an Oscorp banner, detonating with a plume of green smoke and sparks. Screams erupted as the crowd scattered, and Kara's instincts kicked in.

She scanned the sky—expecting a Doomsday. Or maybe a Darkseid.

Instead, she got…a man on a flying skateboard.

Cackling.

Dressed like a goblin.

Kara blinked. "Is that—?"

"The Green Goblin," Natasha cut in, hand already on her concealed firearm.

Kara squinted. "He's… on a scooter."

"It's a glider."

"And he's throwing fireworks."

"Pumpkin bombs."

Kara tilted her head. "That's your villain?"

"He's dangerous," Natasha snapped.

Kara's lips twitched. "Is he?"

Peter Parker had dreamed of being a hero. Swinging through the city, saving lives, getting the girl—classic comic book stuff.

He had not dreamed of fighting for his life while being casually judged by an alien demigoddess and two of the scariest women he had ever heard of.

But here he was.

He swung down, webbing a falling woman to safety. His spider-sense blared, and he dodged a razor-sharp projectile. His heart nearly stopped when he glanced up and saw them.

Kara. Natasha. And Wanda lurking Nearby

Kara and Natasha were watching from a rooftop. While Wanda lurked in the alley.

Together.

WHY WERE THEY TOGETHER?!

"Oh god," Peter muttered. "I'm gonna die."

He narrowly avoided a bomb and threw a desperate glance upward.

"HEY! A LITTLE HELP?"

Kara waved. "You got this, bug boy!"

Peter's heart broke.

From a shadowed alley, Wanda Maximoff watched. Her eyes glowed faintly as she observed Kara, taking note of how effortlessly she shrugged off the danger around her. No fear. No panic. Just casual amusement.

Strength.

Wanda licked her lips. She's perfect.

Since the day she slaughtered Sokovia, Wanda had viewed the world through a different lens. Power was all that mattered. And Kara radiated power.

She would have her. Soon.

Wanda's eyes flicked to Natasha beside Kara. Then to the blonde girl in the crowd—Gwen Stacy.

She recognized predators when she saw them.

But it didn't matter. They could play their games. Wanda would win.

Gwen Stacy was the perfect daughter.

Perfect grades. Perfect hair. Perfect smile.

Police Chief George Stacy's pride and joy.

No one knew the truth.

That beneath the façade was a ruthless killer who had slit throats before acing her chemistry final. That she had broken the alien symbiote Venom into submission, reducing it to a trembling lapdog.

"Queen Gwen… this Kryptonian… she is danger…" Venom whispered in her mind.

Gwen smiled as she gazed at Kara from the festival crowd.

"That's why I want her."

While Spider-Man dodged explosives, Kara munched on her churro.

"Oh, nice flip," she commented as Peter narrowly avoided being vaporized.

Natasha's eye twitched. "People are dying."

"Eh, he's got it."

"Kara."

"Fine." Kara floated an inch off the ground. "I'll…hover dramatically."

Natasha glared.

After the chaos settled and the Goblin retreated, Kara and Natasha started to leave—until Gwen "accidentally" bumped into them.

"Oh! Sorry!" Gwen gasped, eyes wide with perfect innocence. "You're…Kara, right? I heard about you through my dad—Chief Stacy."

Kara blinked. "Oh, cool. Nice to meet you!"

Gwen's smile was dazzling. "You're amazing. I've never seen anyone so strong."

Natasha's danger senses screamed.

Wanda, still watching from afar, narrowed her eyes.

Gwen was making her move.

Kara, oblivious, beamed. "Aw, thanks! Earth women are so friendly!"

Natasha clenched her jaw. This girl was trouble. She could feel it.

But Kara liked her. So Natasha kept her mouth shut.

As they parted ways, Gwen's sweet smile remained. Inside, her mind was spinning.

I'm in.

Venom whimpered in her thoughts. "Queen… Gwen that Kryptonian is a god-killer…"

Gwen grinned. "I know."

From across the street, Wanda watched—pleased but cautious.

If this Gwen gets in my way… I'll break her.

And beside Kara, Natasha muttered under her breath, "This is going to be a problem."

Kara, eating her third churro, was blissfully unaware.
