Chapter 397 Major Matters, Minor Matters
At the same time, Qiao Ze had already finished his meal in the building's cafeteria.
Since his student days, Qiao Ze has maintained a very regular routine in daily activities like eating and sleeping. Not to mention, he now has more stable circumstances.
For instance, he doesn't have to clock in at work, he can come and go as he pleases. The building's cafeteria is always ready with the dishes he wants. However, he usually heads to the cafeteria around 5:40 and finishes dinner before six.
It's not because he's obsessed with health or believes in the theory that you shouldn't eat after six. Mainly, Qiao Ze feels that if he's not a little hungry before bedtime, his mind starts thinking about problems, leading to an odd situation where it takes longer to fall asleep.
So, unless afternoon chores delay him, Qiao Ze is typically done with dinner by this time. Even if he eats dinner after six, he subconsciously eats a bit less.
To accommodate Qiao Ze's habits, Su Mucheng even cut out her little habit of midnight snacking. Su has been a bit lazy lately, and being pregnant with twins, her belly is quite prominent, so she hasn't been accompanying Qiao Ze at the Mathematics Research Institute.
Usually, after eating, Qiao Ze would return to the office, do some trivial calculations to aid digestion, and then head straight home. But today, on a whim, he decided to take a stroll around the campus alone.
So after leaving the cafeteria, Qiao Ze stepped out of the building. He lingered at the entrance for a moment, silently counting to 103 seconds in his mind when Lv Bei and Li Chengze happened to walk out too.
"Professor Qiao, are you going for a walk? I'll join you," Li Chengze enthusiastically said from a couple of steps away.
Lv Bei glanced displeased at this overly familiar guy. He always picks on Lv Bei for being tongue-tied and not articulate. Even though they came out together, he wouldn't even add a "we."
"Mm." Qiao Ze nodded his head and then calmly began to walk.
Soon, the two stood on either side of Qiao Ze. Lv Bei intended to walk half a step behind Qiao Ze, but seeing Li Chengze walking shoulder to shoulder with Qiao Ze, he decided to walk alongside Qiao Ze too. He couldn't let this younger guy outdo him, anyway, Qiao Ze didn't mind such details.
As usual, Qiao Ze spoke very little, just casually walking along the path outside the building.
The Mathematics Research Institute building is located on the new campus of Xilin University of Technology. Near the mountains, there are actually many recreational spots around the school, and the on-campus environment is quite nice, with enough greenery to resemble a park. It also reduces some of the ruggedness of being in the northwest, making it quite exquisite.
This led Lv Bei, walking alongside Qiao Ze, to let his mind wander.
Suddenly, he thought it was quite interesting they were walking together, aptly representing three generations of Huaxia divided by a decade each.
For example, he's from the tail end of the 80s, Li Chengze is mid-90s, and Qiao Ze is a bona fide 00s. This realization made him ponder, the future really belongs to the young. It was a pity he couldn't have walked confidently in the center during his youth.
The 80s generation truly had it the hardest, missing out on all the era's assigned benefits, and before they could shine, they grew old. What bad luck.
"Professor Qiao, what made you decide to go for a walk today? Didn't you usually work out on the top floor?"
While Lv Bei was musing to himself, he suddenly heard Li Chengze start up a casual conversation.
This made Lv Bei somewhat envious of this 90s kid.
Most people around Qiao Ze indeed felt suppressed, unsure of what to say. But this guy has the guts, saying whatever he wants.
Unexpectedly, Qiao Ze answered seriously, "Su said yesterday that I've been getting more and more silent lately, suggested that I go out more."
"Actually, Su is quite right. Being too focused on work isn't good either. People should balance work and rest; excessive focus isn't advisable," Li Chengze spoke at length.
"I always balance work and rest. For any problem that's too difficult, if thinking exceeds three hours without a general idea, I switch my focus to simpler things to relax the brain," Qiao Ze replied casually.
Lv Bei thought it wise to keep silent because Qiao Ze's answers always inadvertently made one feel inadequate.
But then again, if every worker in the world had such awareness, employers would probably wake up laughing from their dreams.
"Actually, I didn't mean that, but Professor Qiao, with your daily commitment to research, giving up almost all recreational activities, don't you ever feel tired?" After a long silence, Li Chengze still reluctantly asked.
Lv Bei thought just for asking this question, Li Chengze deserved to be metaphorically shot hundreds of times.
"Tired?" Qiao Ze tilted his head, pondered for a moment, then shook his head, saying, "I don't feel tired, just that time is always in short supply. There's often a sense of frustration."
"Frustration?" This time, Lv Bei couldn't help but interject; the statement seemed utterly nonsensical.
If this person often feels frustrated, who else in this world has the right to feel proud?
"Actually, if you think about it closely, all human inventions up till now are merely discoveries. Even in mathematics, all inventions are just special cases of discoveries," Qiao Ze explained seriously.
Lv Bei disdainfully glanced at Li Chengze on the other side.
