SUNFALL

Chapter 6: SAVIOUR DISGRACE

I can't feel my arms. I can't move no matter how hard I try to command my body. We're moving or rather whatever it is I'm in is moving and my heart beats faster as time passes. I know death awaits me at the end of this journey and the fact that I can't feel my own body makes me want to cry. Perhaps that would make the fear a little less.

 ****

Voices. Screams. Loud voices and screaming around me. I can't feel my legs. I reach out with my arms but they stop shorter than I reckon them to be. Either I can't scream or I am alone in whatever place I am. A sharp pain rages through my chest and stomach when I twist my upper body making me scream this time for real.

I know because this time I feel a lock moving, a door opens and the lights in the room come on. A woman I think from the little part of her head that's not covered walks in with an object in her hand.

 "Hello," I say.

But it's her syringe that answers me.

 ****

THREE DAYS AGO...

I'm awake. My arms are still bound but I can feel my legs and to my bad luck or maybe good luck, I can also hear the voices outside my room. Not all they say is clear to me but all that Terri says I hear.

"Yes--mistake but he--doesn't have to die. He is--,"

The other voice quietens. I strain to listen to them ere the woman-nurse comes in this time just pushing the door a bit. I try to move even though I know it won't do me any good.

 "Please,"

 ****

NOW...

We've stopped. My mind races thinking of what to do once the person who's transporting me reveals himself. Pleading? Yes, yes I'm a pretty good talker whenever I want to be. Otherwise the scars on my back and arms would be a lot more.

I can only listen as a door opens and at least three people get off approaching me. Time to start pleading or screaming. I almost stop breathing when the back door opens sunlight burning my eyes. Two indistinct figures stand there with what I know could only be blast guns.

"Alright kid see you in the black realm then," one of them says raising his gun.

Speak damn you! My brain fails me as I seek the proper words only to stumble over my mess of a brain. I try breathing afore speaking but choke on my saliva. In the end I close my eyes and think of her. How she has been all these days that I have been away from her. How little she reckoned of the city ere I left and how the Gutters must have taken away her innocence already.

It does that to everyone who is not a Remnant or a high ranking Earlier merchant and not even the strongest person I knew had survived it. My Da. What would he say at this moment? Perhaps something like...

Two shots ring in the air. I open my eyes just in time to see the two figures drop to the ground from my view. I start screaming thrashing hoping that if I do that enough my legs may obey me.

"Dear saints boy! Keep it down!" A familiar voice says.

Terri aims his pistol at me his face very cross.

"Do you know where we are you fool screaming like that?"

I shake my head my eyes never leaving the pistol staring at me. Terri looks at me for a while as if searching my face for grime or dirt. Perhaps a reason to stick that bullet right between my terrified eyes. Finally he sighs abandoning whatever thought was passing behind those dark eyes.

"Can you move boy?" He asks.

Again I shake my head. He puts the pistol away.

 "Don't move,"

If I could I know for sure I wouldn't anywhere past the Black Gun. Not that I know where we are or where to run to if I did move. He returns almost immediately with a syringe almost similar to the one the nurse violated me with back in that shithole of a room. He injects whatever the green fluid is through my leg never mind that I have a fear of sharp objects going through my skin any time of day.

"You should be walking in an hour," Terri says.

"Walking? Where are we going then?" I ask.

I'm sure he's going to shoot me the way he looks at me. He instead smiles at me.

 "We're going home boy."

 ****

Roughly two hours have passed since Terri allowed me to sit next to him in the little Carrier. We're in a desert I think though I couldn't be so sure about such a thing as the legend. Sure films about desert folk from the Before Times have occasionally been shown in the Gutters in public cinema halls but this place is a bit different.

A bit is calling it short of what it is. What with the sand here, I suppose it's called that, is a little on the green side and the dunes all glitter like glass.

 "Proper sight eh boy,"

I turn to him so quick I almost hit him on the head.

"It's amazing," I say. "Why is the sand green here?"

"You've seen sand then eh. In the great Acropolis at that!" Terri says chuckling.

"No I've just seen it films and all but it's always brown or something close to that. This is different,"

"Well different isn't always so bad. I mean look at you boy. Two trips and you're the only one I haven't killed."

 I forget how to breath.

"Anyway boy, that's no sand. Least not what it used to be in the actual sense. It's radioactive is what it is. Not dangerous as much as the things in this place. The MineFields they call them," Terri says.

I'm about to ask what things when I spot a gigantic structure ahead of us. It's almost as tall as some of the buildings back in Citadel and even back home.

"That's the bridge. We're almost there, hold on boy."

Then a terrible roar comes from behind us.
