Chapter 289: Evacuation Plan (7) - First Spy Taken Out

Things were working out smoothly, but William sensed something was about to happen. It was only a matter of time until someone showed up to attack Nathan.

It happened after Nathan spoke with a few merchants, going directly into their houses to speak in private. They were the last ones who would be leaving tomorrow.

Nathan felt proud. He managed to get all 500 people in one day, something most couldn't achieve. Even William was quite surprised. Nathan had many contacts and was one of the most famous guards in the city; people liked him.

This was because he wasn't corrupt; he helped people not for money, but because he wanted to, which charmed the hearts of the citizens.

"Nathan," a voice came from one of the alleys, "how are you doing, my friend?"

When Nathan looked, he saw it was Alderon, a fellow guard and friend. "Hey, Alderon, what are you doing here? Isn't it too late? Your shift starts early tomorrow," Nathan said with a smile.

William was hidden in one of the alleys, watching the scene from afar. Alderon's appearance was strange.

"It could just be a coincidence," William thought.

But just to be sure, William decided to move, stealthily getting closer to Alderon. He circled around and managed to get behind him, and that's when he saw a dagger on his back. He was hiding it.

That wasn't a good sign. Alderon wanted to stab Nathan. He was one of the many spies in the city.

William knew, at that moment, that he had to act before it was too late. Nathan was like a beacon of hope to the people.

Everyone trusted him and was willing to flee the demon island because he said so. If Nathan was dead, then everything would get much more complicated.

So, with quick movements, William appeared behind Alderon. He was so fast that the man didn't even see him coming.

William tossed him down and used his strength to hold the man on the ground. He then disarmed him and showed the dagger to Nathan.

"He had a dagger hidden in his back," William said. "He's one of them."

Nathan was shocked. Alderon had been a good friend to him. He couldn't believe it.

"Alderon, are you one of the spies? Are you working for the noble families that usurped the throne?" Nathan asked, frankly.

"Of course I am! Anyone who isn't stupid will join the noble families. We can't win against them so it's best for us to join and keep living."

"You…"

Nathan was burning with anger. He was loyal to the royal family. Alderon couldn't have known, but long ago, when Nathan was just a kid, the royal family had helped his family.

They went to his small village to help them combat a monster problem and deliver supplies. The king himself went there in person.

Who would do that if not the royal family? The current nobles controlling the demon island weren't even attempting to push back against the invaders, and they surely weren't helping any citizens who needed them.

It was disgusting. Nathan punched Alderon in the face, more than once. In fact, he kept pummeling the man non-stop.

"You fucking bastard! Why are you siding with them? You know they are the wrong ones!" he yelled, his voice raw, as he continued punching.

William grabbed Nathan's hands. "Calm down," he said. "We can't draw attention. Let's just get the answers we need."

With a cold glare, William asked, "Nathan, do you know of a place where no one will hear his screams?"

The city had many places underground that were often used for illegal things. Nathan knew these places, and it was there they found a cell where William could torture Alderon for answers.

William and Alderon were the only ones inside the cell. Nathan and Kier were guarding the door, making sure no one went there.

"Do you really think you can get answers from me?" Alderon said with a smirk. "I trained to endure torture. You will never get a word out of me!"

"I know."

Spies received special training to endure torture. William could inflict a lot of pain on that man, but he wouldn't reveal what William wanted to know.

Alderon was surprised by William's words.

"So why are you even trying?" he asked.

The reason for that was simple: William had other ways to get the answers he needed. With his demonic powers, he could enter the man's mind and retrieve the answers.

It was like beast taming, but instead of taming a beast, he was taming the man's memories.

William placed both hands on Alderon's head and activated his powers. A dark energy that resembled a black smile emanated from his body and went straight through Alderon's ears.

The man froze, unable to move, and his eyes turned white. William closed his eyes and found himself inside the man's head, looking through his memories.

The difference in power was tremendously high. Even if Alderon tried to defend himself against William's mind-reading, it didn't work. He gave all the answers William needed: the faces of the other spies working with him. William now knew all the spies chasing Nathan. After he was done, Alderon fell to the ground, dead.

When William left the room, Nathan was the first to ask, "So what did you find out?"

"Everything he knew," William said. "I know a few others who are after you, so we can go find them and not wait for them to find you. Let's go."

Nathan nodded. Then, he looked toward the cell and saw his old friend Alderon on the ground, dead. Despite knowing that Alderon was a spy, he still felt sad. They had known each other for years. But for the greater good of the demon nation, Nathan endured it and kept moving forward.

They left the underground area and decided to go after the most dangerous spy who was after Nathan. It was someone with a high position in the city.
