Chapter 71: The Lovers Meet
Luo Zheng, suddenly realizing his strength had recovered considerably, didn't want to die anymore, at least not before seeing Lan Xue. Lan Xue's rush to this place was self-explanatory, and he absolutely couldn't fail to repay the beauty's kindness. The clear-headed ability to think made Luo Zheng realize that his body was undergoing changes, which seemed to be a good thing at the moment. With the thought of pursuers close behind, he didn't have time to think further. Luo Zheng spread his legs and continued to sprint under the moonlight, like a wounded lone wolf.
Luo Zheng ran to the mountain top in one breath, feeling his strength exhausted once again. It seemed as if the pursuers had not caught up, so he sat down with his butt, gasping for breath. He quickly checked his equipment: the handgun was still there, the AK47 was there, a magazine left, an Army dagger Type 65, a Mitsubishi bayonet. With just these things, he couldn't defeat the super freaks behind him. Apart from running, Luo Zheng couldn't think of a better plan for the moment.
After resting for a while and still sensing that the pursuers hadn't caught up, Luo Zheng wondered if they might have followed the river downstream. After all, jumping into the river was the best option at the time. But Luo Zheng didn't dare to gamble or rest any longer. He continued on his way, and unconsciously, it started to get light. Luo Zheng looked at his scratched clothes and smiled wryly. Thankfully, his life was still safe for the moment. He had to meet up with Lan Xue as quickly as possible.
Thinking this, Luo Zheng confirmed his direction and detoured towards the direction Lan Xue had escaped. Soon, he came upon a dozen bodies lying in the forest, each with a bullet hole between the eyebrows, looking like drug trafficker militants. Luo Zheng walked up but didn't find any useful weapons, except for four hand grenades. He picked up the grenades and hung them on his body. After another search, he found some compressed biscuits and a canteen of water, which Luo Zheng took with him, eating as he continued on his way.
An hour later, Luo Zheng felt that walking like this was very aimless. In the vast jungle, where could he look? Looking around, he locked onto a peak, the highest one, and without hesitation, started jogging towards it. An hour later, Luo Zheng climbed to the top, standing there, he coldly surveyed the surroundings. All he saw were lush, dense forests, with no clues in sight. Luo Zheng didn't panic, letting the wind billow through his tattered clothes, his expression resolute, his gaze steady.
After waiting for a while, Luo Zheng saw a flock of birds startled into flight in the distance and smiled. Locking onto the direction, he considered the terrain to the left and right before quickly rushing forward. Descending the mountain was much more difficult than climbing it, but that depended on who was doing it. Used to the jungle, Luo Zheng almost leaped down, running at great speed.
It took an hour to reach the mountain top, but Luo Zheng came down in just half an hour. Arriving at the dense jungle at the foot of the mountain, he gripped his AK47 tightly and set off running wildly. An hour later, intense gunfire suddenly sounded from the jungle ahead. Luo Zheng was startled and speeded up, charging forward.
Suddenly, a shadow stumbled and ran towards him from ahead, a figure he recognized very well. Luo Zheng hustled over, and upon getting closer, indeed, it was Lan Xue. He was overjoyed. Seeing that Lan Xue also sensed someone coming and instinctively hid behind a big tree, clearly not recognizing him, Luo Zheng quickly shouted, "Lan Xue, it's me, Luo Zheng."
From behind the big tree, a figure slowly emerged. Luo Zheng hurried forward and was immediately embraced by someone leaping towards him. Who else could it be but Lan Xue? Luo Zheng was elated as he felt a warm, soft body crash into his arms, knocking him to the ground. A familiar voice sobbed, "You big jerk, I thought you were dead."
"I can't die here. This isn't a good place to talk, let's get out of here," Luo Zheng said with a bitter smile, forcing out a smile as he looked at his lover on top of him, who exhaled fragrantly and whose delicate face was streaked with tears. A chord inside him vibrated, warm and reassuring. So this is how good it felt to have her there.
Lan Xue also realized that her behavior was a bit bold and blushed, hurrying up. Luo Zheng noticed a wound on Lan Xue's leg and was shocked. He quickly kneeled down to examine it and saw that it was just a graze from a bullet, not fatal. But as the sound of gunfire grew closer, Luo Zheng didn't have time to consider much else. Bending over, he said, "Quick, get on my back."
"No way, there are too many people; two people can't escape. Give me the gun and you go," Lan Xue regained her composure and decisively tried to grab the gun from Luo Zheng.
"Bullshit, I absolutely won't let the woman I like stay behind and escape alone. Get on quickly, or neither of us can get away," Luo Zheng snapped in frustration and shouted angrily.
"What did you just say?" Instead of getting on, Lan Xue stood there, staring at Luo Zheng, her eyes filled with an urgent longing and expectancy.
"Me?" Luo Zheng was momentarily stunned, realizing that his words were somewhat inappropriate, but a man must own up to his actions. He turned around, looked calmly at Lan Xue, and with a determined face, his eyes clear and resolute, said word by word, "I won't let the woman I like stay behind."
"Hmm," Lan Xue's face flushed even more, a hint of joy flickering in her melancholy eyes, and she no longer objected.
Luo Zheng saw that the pursuers were closing in; bullets were flying everywhere, creating chaos around them. Shocked, he quickly bent down. Lan Xue, without any affectation, hurriedly climbed on, and Luo Zheng started to sprint. With life and death hanging in the balance, the only thought in his mind was to run, run fast, and take Lan Xue away from danger.
Lan Xue on his back didn't have any romantic notions typical between men and women either. In this perilous situation, such thoughts were a luxury, certainly not fitting for the battlefield. Staying alive was the only thought for everyone; to survive, Lan Xue decisively picked up Luo Zheng's Type 92 pistol and kept shooting at the enemies behind them. Almost without aiming, she took lives forcefully, forcing the pursuers to take cover and not dare to follow too closely.
Luo Zheng knew what Lan Xue was doing, and he sped up even more. Relying on his hunter's instinct, Luo Zheng knew which paths were navigable, where bushes would obstruct, and where trees could offer cover. He found a shortcut through the jungle and ran swiftly, soon leaving the pursuers far behind. Still, he didn't dare to stop; as soon as gunfire was heard, that terrifying sniper would surely close in, so they had to get as far away as possible.
With the pursuers now far behind, Lan Xue realized that Luo Zheng hadn't slowed down at all during the run; moreover, the speed at which he ran through the jungle carrying her was still very fast. Surprised, she looked at the routes Luo Zheng chose, noticing that each turn was made perfectly without wasting any time, and she couldn't help but smile, pleased with Luo Zheng's progress.
Hearing Luo Zheng's heavy breathing and feeling his broad shoulders, Lan Xue's mind echoed with the domineering words he had said earlier. She couldn't help but become infatuated, leaning even lower involuntarily, wrapping her arms around her protector's neck, her blushing face filled with a happy smile.
