Chapter 66: Divert the Pursuers
Everyone was startled and looked up to see Luo Zheng already running more than ten meters away. Shan Hu angrily called for others to catch up. Just then, Luo Zheng suddenly changed direction and dashed westward. As everyone spread their legs to chase him, they noticed a large group of pursuers ahead, and Luo Zheng, without hesitation, opened fire on the pursuers, causing them to quickly take cover. Confused by Luo Zheng's actions, they all looked towards Shan Hu.
"Zhengzi, what are you doing?" Shan Hu yelled angrily.
Luo Zheng said nothing but shouted at the pursuers who had reacted, "Come on, you bastards, I'm right here. If you have the guts, come kill me!" he said as he broke into a run toward the west.
Luo Zheng's actions undoubtedly enraged the pursuers who chased after him noisily, firing their guns wildly and leaving the jungle in turmoil.
"Bastard." Shan Hu angrily punched a large tree, while Golden Eagle urgently shouted, "Captain, we need to chase now or it'll be too late."
"Haven't you figured it out yet? Zhengzi is sacrificing himself to draw the pursuers away," Shan Hu said in a low voice. "But no matter what, we can't leave our brother to escape alone. Be careful, everyone, there might still be snipers around. Chase, we have to rescue Zhengzi."
"Yes." Everyone quickly caught up in the chase.
After chasing for a while, they noticed more pursuers rushing ahead, seemingly unaware of their presence. This strange phenomenon made them suspect something. Thinking of Luo Zheng facing nearly a thousand armed pursuers alone, everyone was anxious and sped up the pursuit. With so many pursuers, a sneak attack from behind was meaningless—they had to take a detour to meet up with Luo Zheng.
Thus, they found themselves some distance from the chasing squad. After running three or four kilometers, they suddenly saw Luo Zheng running towards a cliff, surrounded by pursuers with no way out. They were shocked and sped up, only to see Luo Zheng leap off the cliff.
"Ah?" Everyone shouted in surprise, frozen in place, staring at Luo Zheng, who was in freefall, their faces filled with disbelief. How could this have happened? How could things have turned out this way?
"Bastard, thinking I owe you my life? No way," Shan Hu nearly roared.
"Captain," Duke of Thunder grabbed Shan Hu's arm in a panic, "Zhengzi brother is doing good. He is drawing the pursuers away for us. We can't just rush in, or his sacrifice will have been in vain."
"Right, Captain, stay calm," Mountain Leopard came over to help, holding back the furious Shan Hu.
Shan Hu gradually calmed down, his eyes red and his face pallid as he gasped for breath and shouted, "Quick, go check the situation over there."
Understanding his command, everyone released Shan Hu and moved to a nearby high point. Sadly, they couldn't see beneath the cliff, blocked by an outcropping, and Shan Hu's face was so grim it seemed almost as if water could drip from it. As a captain who couldn't bring everyone back safely, it was disgraceful. As a brother, seeing another brother distract the enemy to save his own life, that too was disgraceful.
As soldiers, no one could bear such disgrace; their expressions were very ugly, filled with self-reproach, shame, anger, and grief.
"Captain, look!" Golden Eagle suddenly exclaimed.
Everyone carefully noticed that countless pursuers began to leave, and Shan Hu, deeply pained, said, "Brothers, Zhengzi made this sacrifice for us, we must see him alive or find his body if he is dead, let's go."
"Yes." Everyone agreed solemnly, and rushed forward. When they reached the cliff, they found that the pursuers had completely withdrawn. The cliff was about two hundred meters high, with a raging river below, flowing swiftly to an unknown destination, and Luo Zheng was nowhere to be seen.
"Not good." Golden Eagle, with sharp eyes, noticed that a large group of pursuers had bypassed them and started searching around the river.
"These bastards, I swear enmity against you." Mountain Leopard roared.
"Wait a minute." Shan Hu shouted loudly, stopping those who were about to rush forward.
"Captain?" Everyone looked at Shan Hu in surprise.
"I know how you feel, and how could I not want to avenge our brother Zhengzi? But look, the pursuers clearly know there are five of us, yet only one jumped down. They are not showing any intention of continuing to hunt us. Moreover, when they pursued us all the way here, it doesn't make sense that they didn't spot us. Why did they target Zhengzi only?" Shan Hu said, his mind clear after calming down.
Everyone listened and started pondering, and Golden Eagle said, "Captain, you make sense. There's definitely something fishy we don't know about, but no matter what, Zhengzi saved my life, and I owe him my life. I need to find him, alive or dead; otherwise, I'll never be at peace."
"Right, Captain?" Duke of Thunder and Mountain Leopard asked Shan Hu urgently.
"I know what you're all saying. So, let's go down quietly, let's not disturb those pursuers for now, and then we'll adapt according to the situation. With so many people helping us search, it's easier than just a few of us looking, understand?" Shan Hu said, his face fierce, and he jogged forward, with everyone quickly following.
Before long, they saw even more pursuers searching along the river, determined not to give up. In an open area, several leaders gathered together and were discussing something. Shan Hu quickly signaled everyone to hide on the spot, waiting until the pursuers in front moved on. He looked puzzled and whispered, "Brothers, don't you think these people are making too big a deal out of this? Look at this situation. They're not giving up until they find Zhengzi, which doesn't fit their usual style. "
"Yeah, perhaps they've accidentally killed someone important, and now it's like they are hunting for revenge," Mountain Leopard also said in surprise, looking at the pursuers rushing down ahead.
"It's very strange, brothers, let's think back," said Golden Eagle, speaking softly. Seeing everyone looking curious, he continued, "According to intelligence, the drug dealers have only about a hundred or so people; our mission is to destroy these drugs. But what's the actual situation? Nearly a thousand people, and there are experts among them. What does this suggest?"
"It suggests that our intelligence was wrong, and these people are targeting us," Mountain Leopard replied offhand.
"I used to think so too, but now no, Golden Eagle is right. These people are probably targeting Zhengzi. Zhengzi must have some secrets we don't know about, look," said Shan Hu, pointing at the pursuers ahead, "These bastards clearly know of our presence, but they blatantly ignore us and specifically target Zhengzi. This explains everything, and I feel Zhengzi must also be aware of this. We must report back as soon as possible."
"Makes sense, but no matter what, we can't abandon Zhengzi," Golden Eagle agreed, looking at the pursuers ahead, his eyes filled with resolute determination.
