Chapter 45: Repelling the Strong Enemy
"Shoo, shoo!" Two more gunshots rang out, each hitting somewhere in the darkness, yet the enemy remained silent, as if they had suddenly disappeared. Judging by the direction of the shots, there should be two people; could one of them be Lan Xue? Luo Zheng wondered if the other person might be the instructor.
There were two people stationed at the camp. Their number of enemies was unknown, and they seemed patient. Luo Zheng dared not take any chances. He used his family's Breathing Skill to adjust his breathing, blending himself with the surrounding environment to avoid exposure. He half-closed his eyes and calmly observed all around, listening intently to any sounds, not missing even the slightest movement. One moment of carelessness against a master meant only one thing: death.
"Dada dada!" Inside the Training Team quarters, a few soldiers grabbed their guns and fiercely fired at suspicious spots in the darkness, trying to draw out the enemy's fire, but the darkness remained eerily quiet, revealing nothing. After emptying a magazine, the Training Team members quickly retreated back inside.
"Shoo—ah!" Another scream rang out as someone was hit.
"Damn it." Luo Zheng's face turned livid with anger, realizing he had still underestimated the enemy's strength. He barely dared to breathe as he continued to search the night for possible hiding spots. The Training Team members also quieted down, and the training camp once again fell into a deep silence, with only the wind rustling past their ears.
The moon peeked out from the clouds, casting a hazy glow on the land, improving visibility significantly. Still, Luo Zheng spotted no trace of the enemy. He swallowed his anger and forced himself to remain calm. Suddenly, he heard a faint rustling sound from one side—the noise was soft and hurried, like the footsteps of someone walking.
Luo Zheng was overjoyed. He turned around and indeed saw a black shadow swiftly running towards him, heading directly for the sand pit. He silently mused, "Could this guy also be looking to take over this spot?" Watching as the figure approached at an unfathomably fast pace, like a high-speed car.
"Go to hell." Luo Zheng aimed at the figure, his finger pressing the trigger. His eyes suddenly opened wide as a surge of killer intent burst forth. The approaching person felt the killer intent, hesitated, and at that moment, Luo Zheng decisively pulled the trigger. "Shoo!" The bullet roared out, blazing with scorching flames, rushing towards the figure.
In the darkness, Luo Zheng saw the figure stumble sideways, then quickly sprint back the way they had come, dropping a gun not far away. He was taken aback and then exhilarated. Even a wound was good. Realizing that he might have exposed his position, he quickly rolled to the other side to hide.
"Shoo, shoo, shoo!" A burst of three shots came flying, hitting right where he had just been hiding.
Luo Zheng was shocked to see three bullet holes appear in the sand pit, breaking out in a cold sweat. "That was impressive. Just by one shot, they pinpointed my location. Lucky I dodged it." Immediately afterward, Luo Zheng heard a gunshot from two directions at the camp, and after the sound of the gunshots, the dark night fell silent again.
After this exchange, neither side opened fire again, patiently waiting. Luo Zheng felt the oppressive atmosphere of the Death God enveloping the entire valley, daring not to move. He tried his best to relax, acutely aware of everything around him. The suffocating tension of potentially losing his life at any moment was overwhelming.
After a while, the camp's searchlights suddenly turned on, sweeping across potential hiding spots for the enemy. Luo Zheng was startled, fearing the light might expose him. He hurriedly curled up, using the sand inside the pit to cover himself. He cursed whoever turned on the lights and waited. After a while, when no searchlights swept his way, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
At that moment, the lights in the camp were bright, and a black shadow approached from the outskirts of the camp. Luo Zheng was startled again and hurriedly aimed. Under the searchlight, he saw it was an instructor. He relaxed, loosening his finger on the trigger, but still did not move. Who knew if the enemy had left?
Just then, the instructor shouted, "Everyone pay attention, groups of three, thoroughly search the valley."
"Yes." The Training Team members responded and began to move out from the barracks, searching everywhere.
Luo Zheng speculated that the enemy must have run away, for no one would miss such a good opportunity, but the thought that they might have come specifically for him kept him motionless until he saw Lan Xue charging toward him from the main gate, relieving him slightly as he quickly got to his feet.
"Are you alright?" Lan Xue asked anxiously.
"I'm fine." Luo Zheng looked Lan Xue up and down, relieved to see no signs of injury, and thought of the enemy he had hit. He quickly stepped forward, picked up the weapon from the ground, and seeing that it was a model he did not recognize, handed it to Lan Xue.
Lan Xue examined the gun in her hands, her expression solemn as she looked around and then asked, "Did you hit him?"
"I think so, but it was too dark to see clearly," Luo Zheng replied.
"Well done." The instructor approached, realizing what had happened upon seeing the gun, and sincerely added, "I saw him heading toward your hiding spot, definitely trying to take over the spot. Once he'd hidden in the pit, it would have been hard for us to shoot him, but easy for him to shoot at us. Luckily, you were inside. It's good you weren't too frightened to shoot."
"Uh?" Luo Zheng gave a wry smile, saying nothing more.
Lan Xue glanced at the instructor but also remained silent, handed the gun to the instructor, then giving Luo Zheng a significant look, the two headed towards the barracks. On the way, Lan Xue lowered her voice and said, "It might be people from the Wild Wolf Mercenary Corps, and I didn't expect two of them this time. Be careful tonight, they might still plan a counterattack."
"Understood, you be careful as well," Luo Zheng gratefully responded.
"Yes, it seems they won't stop until they kill you. Our defenses here are not strong enough, making it easy for them to find a weak spot. It looks like we can't stay here," Lan Xue murmured.
"Uh?" Luo Zheng looked at Lan Xue in surprise, seeing that she didn't seem inclined to elaborate, he refrained from asking more.
At that moment, Song Yang rushed over, a resentful look in his eyes at Luo Zheng, then quickly ran up to the instructor and whispered, "Tonight is a good opportunity."
"What do you mean?" the instructor asked, surprised.
"Find a way to finish him off, and then pin the blame on the attackers," Song Yang whispered.
"Uh?" The instructor's face turned grave as he gazed at Song Yang, conflicted internally but not voicing objection. After a moment of thought, he murmured, "I don't care what you do, just make it clean, otherwise I can't cover for you. Also, that kid seems tricky to deal with, and the sniper instructor is protecting him. It won't be easy."
"No problem, we'll wait until he goes back to his room to rest, then claim it was the enemy's counterattack that got him, and burn everything down. No one will be able to trace it back," Song Yang harshly stated, his eyes filled with a cold, vengeful sneer.
