Chapter 41: Safe Escape
At the critical moment, it was Lan Xue who fired the gun to rescue Luo Zheng. When the enemy appeared, Lan Xue had already spotted him. The reason she didn't shoot immediately was that the enemy deliberately exposed himself. A sniper would not easily expose their body unless necessary; thus, Lan Xue was also waiting, until a killing intent burst from the enemy and she preemptively struck with a headshot. Lan Xue was fully confident in her abilities.
After killing the enemy with one shot, Lan Xue did not reveal herself immediately; instead, she continued to wait and observe her surroundings to prevent any accomplices from appearing. Seeing Luo Zheng quickly take cover and scan for suspicious targets instead of running around like a new recruit, she smiled, satisfied with the great improvement in his psychological quality.
After a while, having not noticed any threats and feeling some strength returning to his body, Luo Zheng turned off the safety of his gun, positioned it in front of his chest and abdomen, held his right hand tight against his ribs, stretched his legs naturally straight, and forcefully rolled toward the direction of his clothing, moving quite swiftly.
After retrieving his clothes, Luo Zheng rolled back to the boulder, slipped them on, a process which took about five seconds. For a skilled sniper, that was plenty of time to take a shot; therefore, it could only mean two things—one, there were no enemies nearby, or two, they were wary of the person who had helped him. Thinking of the latter, Lan Xue's image flashed in his mind, calming him immensely.
Waiting a bit longer and noticing no movement around him, Luo Zheng quickly rolled over to the corpse, dragged the assailant's body to the boulder, and removed the steel helmet, finding the enemy to be of the Yellow Race. Checking the back of the neck, he saw an exquisitely detailed Wild Wolf tattoo and was shocked, murmuring, "It's really them."
Lifting the helmet with his gun, Luo Zheng slowly raised it over the boulder. No one fired. Pulling it back, he pondered that this waiting game was not a solution. Could he not step out forever? Thinking that Lan Xue might be hiding nearby, he determinedly stood up, ready to face death if necessary, and with Lan Xue to avenge him, he was prepared to risk it all.
Seeing Luo Zheng's reckless resolve, using himself as bait to attract the sniper, Lan Xue's face changed drastically, inwardly cursing Luo Zheng for his recklessness. Though aware that this was the best current option, she remained on full alert, searching suspicious areas. After a while, as no shots were fired and Luo Zheng had already returned with the enemy's body, she remained cautious.
As they reached the tree-lined mid-hills without anyone firing, Lan Xue still refused to let down her guard, waiting quietly until Luo Zheng disappeared from sight. Seeing no suspicious figures, she quickly slid down the large tree and followed behind him, observing the surroundings and staying on alert.
The two walked one behind the other, unwittingly reaching a valley and seeing Luo Zheng enter the camp, Lan Xue did not return immediately, but instead found a spot to remain hidden and patiently waited in case the enemy approached.
It was mealtime, and seeing Luo Zheng arrive with a corpse intrigued everyone; they gathered around. The instructor stepped forward, inspected the body closely, especially the tattoo on the back of the neck, and said sternly to Luo Zheng, "Someone take away the body, deal with it, and come with me."
"Yes!" Someone responded and took the body away.
Luo Zheng knew this matter could not be discussed openly and followed the instructor to the office. After closing the door, with a grave expression, the instructor asked, "What happened?"
"Details are unclear. Someone ambushed me, but was killed. I brought the body here," Luo Zheng explained.
"Huh?" The instructor, unaware of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group issue, had seen the previous body with an identical tattoo. Realizing the complexity beyond, though ordered to keep it confidential and leave such matters to higher-ups, recognized he couldn't get more information and earnestly said, "Try to avoid going to the back mountain in the future."
"Yes," Luo Zheng agreed, though he privately thought otherwise.
"Go out," the instructor waved and said. After Luo Zheng left, he immediately dialed a secret phone number. When the call connected, he said, "Old Chief, it's me. There's a situation I need to report. The man with the Wild Wolf tattoo appeared again; he was killed, details are unclear. I'll report to you as soon as I find out more."
After listening for a while, the instructor slowly put down the phone, his face filling with confusion. He couldn't understand why the Old Chief also instructed him not to intervene and to act as though he was unaware. What was the mystery behind this? Suddenly, he remembered that last time, the sniper instructor had dealt with the body, who had been missing for most of the day. Could he have gone to the back mountain? Was it the Sniper Instructor? Was the Sniper Instructor truly here to deal with these people?
Thinking for a long time, the instructor couldn't untangle his thoughts and decided to let it go. He was about to find the sniper instructor when, upon opening the door, he saw Sniper Instructor Lan Xue enter. Lan Xue, not waiting for the instructor to ask, took the initiative and said, "Let the higher-ups handle the body. There are individuals of unknown identity trying to spy on the training camp with unclear intentions. We can't keep this hidden; we must caution everyone to be more careful, or there will be trouble."
"Alright, was it you who killed him?" the instructor asked with a mix of surprise and suspicion.
"Yes, is there a problem?" Lan Xue countered.
"No." The instructor had meant to ask something else but swallowed his words upon seeing Lan Xue's cold expression. Regardless of whether Lan Xue had come to handle the tattooed individuals, the instructor decided to follow the Old Chief's order and not get involved. Sometimes, knowing too much wasn't necessarily a good thing.
Lan Xue turned around and left, returning to her room. She also dialed a secret number and immediately said after connecting, "Captain, there's a situation I need to report to you."
"Aren't you on leave? What's the situation?" a robust voice questioned in return.
"I'm at the Northwest Military District Training Team. My cousin asked me to help out for a few days. I did not expect to encounter Wild Wolf mercenaries here. They appeared twice, one each time, and I killed them both," Lan Xue replied coldly.
"Wild Wolf Mercenary Group?" the middle-aged man asked, not minding Lan Xue's icy tone. After receiving Lan Xue's affirmative reply, he cursed angrily, "Those bastards, I was already being lenient by not seeking them out, and they dared to provoke us? I will deal with them. I'll arrange for someone to come over; you be careful."
"Understood," Lan Xue responded, then hung up the phone and went to the cafeteria. Seeing Luo Zheng eating, she picked up a meal and sat down beside him, whispering, "Don't go to the back mountain for a week, live ammunition training."
"What?" Luo Zheng looked at Lan Xue in surprise, wanting to ask why. But recalling Lan Xue's care for him, he guessed there must be a reason, one not suitable for him to know. Glancing around to ensure no one was paying attention to them, he whispered back, "Understood."
Lan Xue, trusting that Luo Zheng would keep his word, lowered her head and began eating. Knowing Lan Xue didn't want others to understand their special relationship, Luo Zheng kept quiet. Just after finishing his meal, Lan Xue whispered to him, "Come see me tonight."
"What?" Luo Zheng watched as Lan Xue walked away, utterly perplexed.
