Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 37: Ambush Assassination

Quickly, the instructor caught up with everyone, glanced at the scene with a grim expression, and, without having time to ask for details, had someone take Song Yang and two others away before he himself swiftly pursued, moving through the night like a cheetah, swift in action. Luo Zheng watched the departing instructor in surprise, thinking to himself that he really had some skills.

Song Yang and his companions were quickly taken away, and a few people remained at the scene to search for signs of the fight. Luo Zheng did not go out but continued to lie in wait. Soon after, Lan Xue and the instructor returned with grim expressions. At the scene of the fight, the instructor inquired about the situation, and learning that nothing had been found, said reluctantly to Lan Xue, "It seems we are dealing with a master. We must report this immediately. What do you think?"

Lan Xue looked around, her face cold, not immediately answering the instructor's question. Her gaze unintentionally swept over the area where Luo Zheng was hiding, and she said to the instructor, "You take the team back; I'll stay and check things out further."

"That's fine, just be careful. Do you want to leave a few people to help?" the instructor asked knowingly.

"No need, the opponent is an expert," Lan Xue reminded him.

The instructor nodded, understanding that with an expert involved, keeping the Training Team members around would only cause confusion. He quickly left with his team, and Lan Xue started to survey the area. Once the instructor and others had gone, Lan Xue looked towards where Luo Zheng was hiding and said with concern, "Come out, there's no one else here."

Luo Zheng, knowing that Lan Xue was a sniper and that her discovering him was not strange, quickly crawled out of the bushes and jogged over, asking, "Do you know who the person is?"

"It's an expert. What happened here?" Lan Xue asked coldly.

Luo Zheng explained the situation in detail, and Lan Xue further inquired about Black Shadow's attack methods, then fell into deep thought. Luo Zheng, not wanting to disturb her, patiently waited. Soon, Lan Xue quickly climbed a large tree that Black Shadow had scaled, checked around, and then climbed down, telling Luo Zheng, "This is strange."

"Yes, I thought they were here for Song Yang, but now it seems..." Luo Zheng responded.

"Song Yang must have been coming to trouble you. He unexpectedly encountered Black Shadow. It looks like Song Yang intended to harm you. He's seriously injured now and won't be able to bother you for a while. I am curious about what Black Shadow's motive is and why he was scouting the military camp," Lan Xue analyzed coldly.

"Indeed, I also feel Song Yang was after me. He didn't see me initially and had the others hide, then deliberately exposed himself to trick me into showing myself. I didn't expect Black Shadow to be there. If Song Yang hadn't seen me and retreated, none of this would have happened tonight. Evil begets evil, he got what he deserved. The other two were accomplices and deserved to be beaten. I think Black Shadow will come again," Luo Zheng said discontentedly.

"Since he came to scout and didn't get what he wanted, he will definitely come back. You must change your hiding spot. The opponent is a master. Though you've fooled the people from the Training Team with your hiding skills, it's not enough to hide from him. Luckily, you were calm enough just now not to expose yourself; otherwise, we would have been in trouble," Lan Xue looked at Luo Zheng, her eyes showing satisfaction but even more concern.

"Don't worry, I know my own limits and won't be reckless," Luo Zheng said gratefully. Seeing Lan Xue nod, he continued, "That person will definitely come back, so how about this, I'll keep hiding here, and you join me; together, we might be able to catch them."

"No, you can't be sure when they will come, and you can't just wait here. You should train somewhere else first, and leave the rest to me," Lan Xue said sternly.

Luo Zheng knew Lan Xue was protecting him, which warmed his heart, but he still said firmly, "I understand what you mean, but I can't agree. If I can't handle even this, always being timid and hesitant, how can I improve myself? With you here, I believe nothing will happen, and even if something does, it doesn't matter. From the day I carried a gun, I've not been afraid to die on the battlefield. Besides, didn't you say I'm a 'lucky general'? Nothing will go wrong."

Lan Xue looked deeply into Lan Xue's eyes, her usually icy face suddenly smiled, revealing a touch of relief. She nodded gently, and said seriously, "I really didn't misjudge you. Don't worry, I will protect you. Continue to hide from afar; I suspect they will come back tonight."

"Ah? Okay," Luo Zheng exclaimed in surprise, thinking of Lan Xue's capabilities and without a doubt, agreed completely. Bending low, he quickly returned to his previous hiding spot among the bushes. Since Lan Xue had instructed him to stay put, there must be a good reason; Luo Zheng trusted that Lan Xue would not harm him.

After hiding, Luo Zheng could not see Lan Xue's shadow. He carefully sensed his surroundings and did not detect anything suspicious. Remembering how easily Lan Xue had found his hiding spot earlier, he realized the gap between them was still large. The forest leaves rustled in the wind, bushes swayed, and the cold moonlight spread a layer of silver over the earth—a serene and peaceful scene, yet who could imagine the endless danger lurking here?

About half an hour later, Luo Zheng still hadn't seen any signs and shifted his stiff body slightly, took a deep breath, and continued to wait patiently. He kept observing the surroundings through the sniper scope until his eyes felt like they were about to tear up from the long focus.

Before long, Luo Zheng felt someone approaching and instinctively looked toward the dim forest, which was pitch black and seemed capable of swallowing everything, heart-pounding. An owl hooted and flapped its wings into the forest, quickly disappearing from sight.

"Huh?" Luo Zheng watched the owl hunting; usually, if an owl was hunting comfortably, it meant no one else was around. But Luo Zheng distinctly felt someone approaching, hiding in the dark forest. After carefully watching for a while and seeing nothing, he dared not move and continued to wait. Soon, a Black Shadow darted out of the forest, like a sly cat, and with a few leaps arrived at the site of the recent fight.

"He really came," Luo Zheng was delighted, his grip tightening on the sniper rifle, finger hooking onto the trigger.

Unexpectedly, a faint killing intent leaked out, and the Shadow immediately lay on the ground, curling up to minimize the target area, vigilantly looking around. Luo Zheng was shocked by this reaction; just the thought of movement had made the opponent acutely aware—truly impressive.

"Whoosh!" A sniper bullet roared out.

Luo Zheng heard the gunshot and almost instinctively pulled his trigger. Looking through the sniper scope, he saw the Shadow unable to even scream as its head exploded, sending a mess of red and white flying, the body flung aside—dead beyond doubt. Luo Zheng saw Lan Xue rushing from the darkness, taken aback by her swift action, realizing he had underestimated Lan Xue's strength. The very alert Shadow had not been able to evade Lan Xue's deadly snipe—too powerful.
