Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 33: Lan Xue Arrives

After the bugle for lunch sounded, a large number of soldiers rushed in, each serving themselves and starting to eat. Luo Zheng scanned the crowd and headed toward his bedroom, but suddenly, he saw a few people walking through the door. Leading the group was an instructor, and beside the instructor was a female officer wearing camouflage. She had a great figure but plain features. However, Luo Zheng distinctly felt a familiar aura, and he stopped in surprise, searching his memories.

The female officer glanced over the room and looked at Luo Zheng before heading into a private room with the instructor and others. Luo Zheng distinctly saw the female soldier smile at him with a strange expression, which puzzled him greatly. He returned to his bedroom and lay on the bed to ponder, feeling that this person was very familiar, yet her appearance seemed quite foreign to him.

After thinking for a while to no avail, Luo Zheng simply set the matter aside and stuck to the plan. In the afternoon, he was to train his skills. Luo Zheng got the cloth strips for binding his hands ready and waited. After a while, when the people in the dining hall had eaten their fill and left, Luo Zheng cleaned up the mess hall and prepared to go to the back mountain. A soldier ran up to him and loudly shouted, "Hey, the instructor is calling for you. Training ground, move quickly."

"Huh?" Luo Zheng looked at the quickly departing soldier in astonishment. He had been here for almost half a month, and the instructor had never summoned him before. What was going on? After thinking it over, Luo Zheng put down the cloth strips, straightened his clothes, and strode towards the training ground.

Arriving at the training ground, Luo Zheng noticed that the female officer was also there. He jogged up to her and after saluting, said, "Instructor, you were looking for me?" Officially, Luo Zheng certainly didn't want the instructor to catch him out, and saluting a superior was a rule he couldn't afford to neglect.

"This is our sniper instructor," the instructor said before walking off to the side. He was very curious and couldn't understand why a sniper instructor had suddenly been sent from above.

"As far as I know, there are thirty-three people in the Training Team, thirty-two actually present—only you were absent. Give me a reason?" the female officer said to Luo Zheng in a cold tone.

Luo Zheng looked at her in surprise. Her voice was hoarse, but her way of speaking and her expressions were very familiar. He was greatly puzzled. Hearing the female officer's dissatisfied snort, he was about to speak when he heard her coldly command, "I don't care what reason you have for being late, start running three laps around the training ground immediately."

The training ground was vast, and three laps amounted to about five kilometers. Of course, Luo Zheng wasn't concerned about the distance. He looked at the female officer in surprise, feeling very familiar with her yet finding her appearance very strange. After thinking it over, he decided not to be confrontational and to see how things played out, so he began running forward.

By the time he finished the three laps, Luo Zheng found everyone engaged in sniper training, with targets all set up beyond six hundred meters. The instructor was resting on a training vehicle not far away, observing the shooting results of the soldiers with binoculars, while the female officer was inspecting the soldiers training prone on the ground. Luo Zheng walked over to her, saluted, and reported, "Reporting, three laps completed. Awaiting instructions."

"Take your position in the training area," the female officer coldly instructed, pointing forward.

Luo Zheng looked over and saw an 88-type sniper rifle set up there along with a box of ammunition. He ran over, laid down on the ground, picked up the rifle, and aimed. Luo Zheng was no stranger to the 88-type sniper rifle; on his return from a jungle hunt of the enemy, he had often used this type of rifle to practice his gun skills on wild animals.

Efficiently finding his target, Luo Zheng used the method taught by Lan Xue to estimate the wind speed and distance and adjusted the offset. He took a deep breath, knowing that during sniping, even the slightest tremor could affect accuracy. After his breathing was completely stable, Luo Zheng still didn't shoot. Instead, he closed his eyes and used his heart to judge the position of the target and the speed of the wind, gradually isolating the continuous sound of gunshots around him, and entered a trance-like state.

After a while, Luo Zheng realized he could no longer sense the target and opened his eyes to see that it was still there. It was just that his sensory abilities were insufficient, and after a prolonged period, he lost sight of the target. Just as he was about to practice more, a sharp whistle blew, everyone stood up, and the sniper training came to a pause; Luo Zheng also put down his rifle and stood up.

"Gather," the female officer called out loudly.

Everyone assembled, and the person responsible for observation ran over to check the target positions, gathered the results, and handed them to the female instructor. The female instructor glanced at them and said coldly, "Very good, you bunch of trash, the best score is only eighty rings, and the worst actually zero rings. Do you know? The worst Special Forces soldier scores 85 rings at this distance. Congratulations, you'll soon be eliminated."

The instructor came over, took the scores to look at them, and, dissatisfied, demanded, "Who shot at target eleven?"

"Reporting, me." Luo Zheng answered.

The instructor hadn't expected Luo Zheng to be the one with the zero score and, realizing this, let it pass; a Connection Soldier, it was normal to have a poor score. He immediately scowled and said, "You have the nerve to admit this score? Don't go around saying you're one of my soldiers."

"Yes, I am not your soldier; I'm very clear on that," Luo Zheng retorted without submission or arrogance.

"Shut up." The female officer, seeing Luo Zheng was about to say more, instantly issued a cold command, "Why didn't you fire a single shot?"

Upon hearing this, everyone came to a sudden realization—it's because he didn't shoot at all. Could it be a fear of guns? Under the instructor's influence, everyone had formed a premature opinion, and combined with the lack of opportunity to interact with Luo Zheng, their impression of him was not good.

"Reporting Instructor!" bellowed Song Yang with a smug voice.

"Speak," the female officer said, giving Song Yang a cold look.

"Yes," Song Yang puffed out his chest and loudly declared, "Reporting Instructor, he is a Connection Soldier, here to gild his resume. He's usually just in charge of cooking for us, never touched a gun, probably doesn't know how to use a sniper rifle; please be understanding, Instructor." Although his words seemed to defend Luo Zheng, they were actually setting a trap for him. If the female instructor didn't know Luo Zheng, she might develop contempt for him. In the army, where strength is respected, nobody looked up to Connection Soldiers.

"What do you have to say?" The female soldier ignored Song Yang and instead looked at Luo Zheng for an answer.

"Reporting, the fellow soldier just now was correct, I am a Connection Soldier, I just need to make good meals and ensure the logistics for everyone, that's all. As for the gun, I don't know how to use it, nor do I need to," Luo Zheng said earnestly, his eyes, however, were fixed on the female officer, trying to gauge her thoughts. Regrettably, her eyes were as cold as ever, void of emotion as if carved from Buddha himself.

"Very well, since you don't want to practice shooting, from now on, don't practice at all," the female officer said coldly.

As Luo Zheng observed the female officer's increasingly familiar icy gaze and familiar tone of speech, he grew more puzzled. On a hunch, he tentatively said, "Reporting, if possible, please give me a sniper rifle and bullets. I'll go for a walk in the hills behind. Maybe by chance, I'll shoot some game and improve everyone's meals."
