Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 195: Wolf King Retreats

The torrential rain pounded on the canopy as if the sky had been pierced, creating a hole, with wild winds causing the large trees to sway erratically. It was pitch-dark, and visibility was reduced to less than an arm's length. Luo Zheng climbed up a large tree, looked at the dark world around him, and felt a heaviness in his heart. He gripped the branches tightly to avoid being shaken off by the wind.

"Awooo—!" Suddenly, several wolf howls erupted from the dense forest ahead, followed by even more howling. Luo Zheng's expression grew grimmer; despite the terrible weather, the pack had still arrived. How would they fight this? Lan Xue's voice, reminding everyone to be careful, echoed in his ears.

"Boom, boom, boom!" Several explosions sounded, accompanied by the pained cries of wolves, but these were quickly drowned out by the rain. A chilling cold spread from the dense forest, making it difficult for everyone to breathe. The howls of wolves in the dark night grew closer, the unseen danger causing suffocating tension.

Soon, countless cold glows appeared in the forest ahead, exceptionally conspicuous in the pitch-black, rainy night, like the beckoning of the Death God, causing palpitations. Seeing such cold glows nearby made everyone gasp in shock. The number of incoming wolves was definitely over three hundred. The chilly glows, like enlarged fireflies, moved continuously through the dense forest while violent howls pounded on everyone's hearts, leaving them breathless.

"Don't shoot, everyone. Stay up in the trees; wolves can't climb up. Let's climb higher," Lan Xue coldly instructed. The ferocious pack was not to be provoked. Once they went mad, who knew what could happen? It was best to avoid their sharp edges and wait till daylight to decide the next move.

"Awoo—!" A majestic howl overshadowed the howls of the pack and the rain, startling everyone up in the trees. Luo Zheng realized it was the signal for attack—the wolves were about to strike. He hurriedly climbed higher and soon discovered countless wolves charging in with howls.

Over a dozen wolves rushed toward the shelter, kicking the campfire erratically. The matches were drenched by the rain, and soon, the only light in the dense forest went out, leaving a world full of terrifying howls. If not for the voices in their headsets, confirming that everyone was nearby, they would have been utterly disoriented.

"Everyone, hold steady. Don't panic. Climb higher," Lan Xue's cold voice rang out again, reminding everyone.

A few wolves climbed onto the shelter and looked up with their cold eyes, howling furiously. Some wolves ferociously jumped toward the trees, most falling back down, but a few managed to catch the branches and attempted to jump higher, howling aggressively and terrifyingly.

"Don't panic, everyone, hold steady." Luo Zheng, worried that the members of Ghost Team couldn't withstand such terrifying pressure, hastily reminded them. Facing the aggressive attack of the wolf pack, especially those attempting to jump into the trees, created an immense pressure, easily causing panic.

"Yes." The members of Ghost Team, being well-trained elite soldiers, didn't panic. They responded calmly, relieving Luo Zheng's concern. Wu Yuan, frustrated, exclaimed, "It's a shame we've used up all the grenades; otherwise, we could've taken a big number down. Captain, should we shoot them and take some wolf pelts back at least?"

"You wouldn't be able to bring back even their fur," Luo Zheng replied irritably. "Have you forgotten what happened last time?"

Wu Yuan paused, then recalled a similar rainy night when the wolves they had killed were devoured by other wolves, leaving no remains. Getting the upper hand would only benefit other wolves. Wu Yuan said with a wry smile, "You're right, Captain. It's a pity. If only we had more ammunition."

Everyone climbed higher, calmly confronting the frenzied wolves. Remaining in the trees, they avoided coming down. The wildly enraged wolves became even angrier, some fiercely ramming the large trees. Fortunately, the trees were sturdy enough. After the initial tension, everyone had adapted to the wolves' attack and calmed down.

"Oh no, there are so many lights in the valley," Meng Zhu suddenly shouted loudly.

"What's going on?" Luo Zheng was shocked and quickly asked, feeling uneasy.

"I'm not sure," Meng Zhu hurriedly explained, "I saw a lot of lights coming from the direction of the Wolf King's lair, moving toward the valley's exit. They're moving very fast. Could it be that the enemy is trying to escape?"

"This is bad, it's a trick by the Wolf King, using the Wild Wolf pack to attack and hold us back while they escape," Lan Xue suddenly said, her cold voice filled with endless killing intent and anger. After finally trapping the members of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group, it was frustrating that they could now do nothing as the enemy employed this tactic to withdraw.

Watching the furious pack of Wild Wolves below the tree, Luo Zheng said bitterly, "It seems the Wolf King had planned this all along. If they can fight, they fight; if not, they use the Wild Wolf pack to cover their escape. By tomorrow morning or once the Wild Wolf pack disperses, their traces will have completely vanished. What should we do?"

"What else can we do, let's leave it to fate, we've done our best," Ghost Hand said, annoyed.

"Yes, there must be three to four hundred Wild Wolves down there. If we can keep our lives intact, that's good enough. We'll wait for daylight or for the wolves to disperse before we do anything. As long as they head into the dense forest, they're bound to leave some trace. Then we can chase after them," Mountain Eagle added nonchalantly.

Luo Zheng found the reasoning sound, but still felt that the situation wasn't that simple. Angered by the violent pack of Wild Wolves below the tree, he reached for his gun several times, but ultimately calmed down and gave up. Competing with the Wild Wolves would just waste bullets and wouldn't solve the problem unless they were all eliminated in short order, which might present a chance to pursue. For now, there was no better option than to endure and wait.

After a while, the Wild Wolf pack was still furiously attacking, continuously ramming into the big tree, trying to climb it. One or two actually made it up, creating a critical situation. Everyone shot and killed them, their bodies falling to the ground and quickly being devoured by the frenzied wolves, leaving nothing behind. The blood-stained Wild Wolf pack became even more violent and continued their assault.

After a while, stationed at the top of a large tree on the mountain, Meng Zhu, with a good vantage point, saw a large number of lights rushing out of the valley exit, over the bridge, and quickly disappearing into the dense forest ahead. He hurriedly reported the situation to everyone else. Everyone had already guessed as much and responded in silence, their hearts filled with anger and frustration. Nobody had expected the enemy to still manage an escape after such a fight.

"Forget it, everyone, don't rush, stay calm. We'll have another chance in the future," Lan Xue comforted.

"Captain, it's bad, the helicopter is taking off," Meng Zhu suddenly shouted.

"A helicopter?" Everyone was startled, and then it all became clear. Luo Zheng's face turned ashen as he said, "Just as I thought. Their attack with the Wild Wolf pack was a cover, and those who just ran were probably those desperate outlaws. It's likely the Wolf King has escaped in the helicopter with his closest associates. What a clever retreat plan, and we wouldn't have been able to thwart it even if we had known."

"Dammit," Lan Xue cursed through clenched teeth, her voice seething with endless killing intent. The others also cursed angrily.
