Chapter 191: Blasting the Radar
The rooftop of this room wasn't large, offering no cover and insufficient space to maneuver. Facing countless enemies swarming up, Luo Zheng opted to avoid their sharp edges. In his panic, he lunged to the side, only then realizing he was at the edge of the rooftop. Midair, with no support to leverage, Luo Zheng fell into the alley below.
"Da da da!" Before he could steady himself, the fierce sound of bullets sweeping through the air erupted in front. Startled, Luo Zheng quickly rolled aside, his gun firing at the enemy direction as he tumbled, perhaps the power of the bullets had an effect, the enemy's firepower wasn't as aggressive as before.
Taking advantage of the enemy's evasion, Luo Zheng leaned against the wall, and turning his head, he saw five people appear in front of him. The sound of messy footsteps came from behind as well, and realizing enemies on the rooftop could mount an assault at any moment, and he was now trapped in this alley with no escape, his hairs stood on end, his muscles tensed tightly, and his breathing became rapid.
In the midst of the chaos, Luo Zheng caught sight of a window diagonally opposite, less than two meters away. The window was small and made of wood. Luo Zheng burst with joy, rejuvenated, he shouted loudly and, with his gun in hand, charged at it. He pushed off the ground forcefully, his body springing up, his shoulder slamming into the window as he was midair, his gun roaring angrily at the enemy, the bullets startling them into evasion once again.
Capitalizing on the brief moment won by his ferocious counterattack, Luo Zheng's shoulder collided with the window. The explosive force unleashed at this life-or-death moment was immense, shattering the window, leading Luo Zheng to roll directly into the room. After landing, he rolled twice to steady himself, relieved to find the room empty. He quickly moved to the window, his pent-up frustration flaring after being suppressed by enemy fire and nearly losing his life.
Using the window as cover, Luo Zheng extended his gun barrel quickly, ready to open fire at the enemies rushing in from outside. But something occurred to him at the last moment. He withdrew his gun and pulled out two grenades, biting off the safety pins with force. He then tossed them outside, one for each side of the alley.
Without waiting for the grenades to detonate, Luo Zheng turned and dashed away. There was no one in the living room, and the bedroom door was shut tight. He kicked open the bedroom door, finding it crammed with several civilians — women, children, and the elderly. They screamed in terror upon witnessing Luo Zheng's fearsome entrance, adults clutching their children and burying their heads in their arms, gazes filled with pleading as they looked at Luo Zheng.
Luo Zheng glanced at the people, detected no danger, and noticing the window, he decisively raised his gun and began shooting at it. The people in the room thought they were about to be massacred in revenge and fell down in fear. Seizing the moment, Luo Zheng charged forward, kicked open the window, and flipped out.
Outside was a small alley. Luo Zheng looked left and right without spotting any enemies and quickly sprinted toward the radar direction. Not even ten meters out, he sensed more people charging toward him. With a forceful leap, he stepped onto a nearby windowsill, propelling himself onto the rooftop with a whoosh. Tucking and rolling to stabilize himself, Luo Zheng looked up only to see the enemies who had chased him up to the rooftop now jumping down into the alley. Some spotted him, shouting something in surprise.
Angered by the persistent pursuit, Luo Zheng let loose with his automatic rifle, firing at the enemies on the rooftop a row of houses away. Most of the enemies had already jumped down, and the few — no more than five or six — who hadn't managed to evade were no match for Luo Zheng's gunfire. Those not killed were frightened enough to jump down too.
With no immediate threat behind him, Luo Zheng swiftly took aim at the radar. The enemy could emerge at any moment, and the window of opportunity might last only a second. Having battled his way here, Luo Zheng didn't want to miss his chance. Focusing his mind and steadying his breath, he took aim — but just as he was about to fire, Luo Zheng suddenly felt an intense twitch in his eyelid, his whole body as if plunging into an ice cave, his blood seemingly congealed.
"Not good." Luo Zheng was alarmed, knowing that he might have been targeted by the enemy. Reluctant to give up the opportunity at hand, in a split second, Luo Zheng's mind suddenly cleared. His forehead was covered in cold sweat. He decided to dodge and reassess, preserving himself to kill the enemy. With divine assistance, he forcefully leapt to the side, pulling the trigger like a ghostly god as he sailed through the air.
"Boom!" The explosive round whistled out, carving a violent path of impact through the void.
Landing heavily on the stone slabs, Luo Zheng rolled twice before stabilizing, somewhat uncertain if he had fired a shot in the moment he dodged, nor why he had the idea to do so. It felt as if his soul had been drained by the bullet, a strange sensation. Could this be snap shooting? Shooting in an instant fully governed by consciousness?
Hearing the crisp sound of a bullet striking the stone floor nearby, Luo Zheng knew he had narrowly escaped death once again. His entire body was drenched in cold sweat, feeling as if he could no longer muster any strength. Pain from hitting his back against the stone slab surged like a tide. An explosion sounded close to his ear; the radar must have been destroyed. Thinking this, he smiled. At least he had completed the mission, and death would be worth it.
With open terrain all around and devoid of strength, the sniper targeting him wouldn't settle for a single shot. By now, the sniper must have locked onto him again, right? With this thought, Luo Zheng smiled bitterly. It seemed he was truly about to die. Under the blazing sun, amidst drifting white clouds, dying in such weather wouldn't be too bad.
"How are you? Respond," a voice rang in his ear. Luo Zheng was startled, it sounded familiar. Suddenly, he realized it was Lan Xue. His spirits lifted, and a voice within him roared, No? He couldn't die yet; someone was still waiting for him. Strength flooded back into him like a tidal wave.
Luo Zheng scrambled to his feet, only to be shocked to find a sniper running toward him on the rooftop, the rifle leveled at his shoulder, the dark muzzle locked tightly on him, ready to spew out lethal bullets at the slightest unusual movement. Luo Zheng felt the cold murderous aura enveloping him. This aura was familiar; it must have been from the same person who had fired earlier. Why hadn't he shot immediately? To capture him alive?
The distance was no more than twenty meters, a non-issue for an exceptional sniper. Luo Zheng was confident he could take the enemy down in half a second, but his opponent would only need 0.1 seconds to do the same to him. In other words, if he showed any intention of counterattacking, he wouldn't even be able to raise his weapon before getting his head blown off by the enemy. Watching the approaching foe, something about the figure seemed familiar, prompting Luo Zheng to take a closer look.
The enemy was tall, clad in a black robe that revealed only his eyes. Those eyes were not like the Wolf King's he had encountered in the dense forest. Luo Zheng's mind involuntarily recalled the last competition, the man who had sniped at him from the cliff. It was Fox Wolf. He hadn't expected Fox Wolf to be the one. Luo Zheng gave a wry smile; being targeted by such a formidable expert, it seemed this time he was doomed.
"Bang!" A terrifying gunshot rang out beside his ear.
