Chapter 181: The Wolf Clan Monarch
The night shrouded the primordial forest, moonlight like water, resembling gauze, filtering through the dense leaves and scattering on the ground. It reflected off the roaring campfire, casting a mutual glow. Within ten meters of the campfire, dozens of wild wolves whined restlessly, their rank saliva dripping from their maws, stretching long, oddly eerie as it reflected the moonlight. Their murky eyes emitted a cold light in the darkness, as if they were the Death Gods lurking in the night.
"Awooo—!" Another wolf howl sounded, closer this time. The frenzied wild wolf pack fell eerily quiet, lying in the forest without moving, as if waiting for something. The silence among the pack seemed as if they were Death Gods ready to claim lives at any moment, creating an oppressive atmosphere that quickly spread around, putting everyone on high alert.
Watching this scene, Luo Zheng's expression turned as solemn as iron. His eyes narrowed to slits, and the experience he'd gained from hunting since childhood made him realize that a massive crisis was brewing. If it erupted, it would be earth-shattering. He spoke in a low voice, "Ghost Team, pay attention. No one goes down there. No shooting without my command. Looking at this situation, the Wolf King is probably coming."
"Yes." The Ghost Team members were skilled and brave, but even they were stunned into stillness by this strange development, not daring to make a move.
It was against common sense for the bloodthirsty, frenzied wolf pack to calm down. Hearing Luo Zheng's command, Lan Xue coldly said, "You three better behave and see what's going on first."
"Don't worry about it." Ghost Hand and the others casually responded, but Luo Zheng could tell that these three guys didn't take it to heart. Of course, these three had their own wildness. As long as they didn't cause trouble, Luo Zheng would be at ease. He saw the wolf pack suddenly part to make way, and a snow-white wild wolf appeared before them.
This snow-white wild wolf was as large and sturdy as an ox, standing about one and a half meters tall. It stood still ten meters away. Its eyes danced with a cold glint, while the other wild wolves lay prostrate on the ground, whimpering respectfully, as if worshipping. Witnessing this, Luo Zheng felt his scalp tingle and nervously said, "Not good, it's the White Wolf King."
"It's just a beast, what's there to talk about?" Snow Leopard said with disdain.
Hearing Snow Leopard's voice through the earpiece, Luo Zheng gave a bitter smile, not in the mood to explain. Lan Xue noticed something amiss, thought of Luo Zheng's Hunter status, her face turned cold, and asked, "Is there a problem?"
"A big problem," Luo Zheng replied, feeling compelled to explain to Lan Xue. "The appearance of the white wolf leads to rivers of blood. The White Wolf King is an anomaly among wild wolves, a legend said to be the monarch of the wolf tribe, rarely born in a century, commanding all wild wolves under the heavens. In other words, not only is the White Wolf the monarch of its tribe, it's also the sovereign over all wild wolf tribes in these vast mountains. Wherever the White Wolf King goes, it signifies that all the wolves in the forest will come, bringing a bloody storm in its wake."
"Ah? Really?" Snow Leopard said, surprised and noticeably more cautious.
"That's the legend, who knows if it's true." Luo Zheng replied irritably, fixing his gaze on the White Wolf King, as he heard Lan Xue's inquiry, "Do you have any plans?"
"If it hasn't begun to kill, perhaps we could bribe our way out. But now that we've killed so many wild wolves, a deadly feud has been set. I fear we can't end this amicably. Whatever you do, don't shoot. I'm going down to talk to it," Luo Zheng said with a grave voice, as he packed away his weapon and hung his backpack on a tree.
"No way, how will you talk?" Lan Xue said anxiously.
"The Hunter's way, passed down from our ancestors. The Wolf King has a spiritual connection, the White Wolf King even more so," Luo Zheng explained.
"No, you can't go. I won't allow it. After killing so many, a deadly enmity has been formed. How can there be any negotiation?" Lan Xue said urgently.
Luo Zheng knew this problem all too well, but without talking, there was no chance at all. He placed all his belongings on the tree and was about to jump down when suddenly, the White Wolf King raised its head and let out a long howl. The sound traveled far and seemed like a proud War God issuing a challenge.
"Not good, everyone, don't move," Luo Zheng's face changed dramatically as he stared intently at the Wolf King, not jumping down anymore.
"What's happening?" Lan Xue asked coldly.
"There's no chance for talks anymore, it's calling its pack," Luo Zheng said gravely, "I suggest no one moves. Stay put for now. We are safe in the trees; they can't attack us here. It's best if we let the wolf pack leave on their own. Otherwise, even if we fend them off now, we would be endlessly hunted later on. It's not safe as they are impossible to guard against completely."
Everyone knew about the vengeful nature of wild wolves and didn't object. Before long, countless howls could be heard from all around. There was no telling how many there were. Everyone felt an overwhelming murderous aura approaching and, with pounding hearts, gripped their guns tightly, watching their surroundings and readying themselves for battle.
Soon, a large number of wild wolves arrived, roughly a hundred. With so many wolves gathering and hiding in the dark areas of the nearby forest, their eyes flickered with a cold, ghastly blue light, like Death Gods of the night. Several robust wolves gathered in front of the White Wolf King, lying on the ground respectfully as if waiting for an inspection by a high-ranking officer.
After another long howl from the White Wolf King, these wild wolves stood up and lined up in a row, their cold gazes locked on the people in the trees, their fury rising. The wolves surrounding them followed suit, and a great battle seemed imminent. Even though everyone knew that the wild wolves couldn't climb the large tree and pose a threat to them, they still felt a chilling sensation on their scalps.
"Aooo—!" Suddenly, the White Wolf King howled again, its powerful and mighty voice carried far and wide, scaring away other beasts and causing birds to fly away in fear. The entire forest seemed to tremble, and Luo Zheng felt the Wolf King's towering rage. His fighting spirit was also ignited. If there was no avoiding the fight, they would battle. He drew his Type 65 Army dagger, a keepsake from his platoon sergeant, which Luo Zheng always carried with him and used only in dire situations. With a deep look, Luo Zheng said coldly, "Platoon sergeant, we're going to fight side by side once again."
"What are you planning to do?" Lan Xue asked in surprise.
Luo Zheng didn't reply. Instead, he stared coldly at the White Wolf King, took off his camouflage suit, and hung it on the tree, then placed his helmet inside his backpack. After thinking for a moment, he picked up the Type 95 rifle with a Military dagger in each hand, holding them in reverse grip, and suddenly leaped down from the tree, like a large bird casting a Black Shadow through the Void.
"Roar—!" After landing, Luo Zheng did not stand up but stayed on all fours, slightly lifted his head, and coldly gazed at the White Wolf King. Imitating a tiger's roar, he issued a challenge to the White Wolf King. A strong, roaring sound erupted from him, like thunder tearing through the night, overpowering the frenzied howls of the wolf pack.
"What are you doing?" Lan Xue called out anxiously.
"Captain, don't panic yet; this kid has some tricks up his sleeve. Everyone, stay alert. Provide fire support immediately if things go south," Ghost Hand suddenly reminded everyone. All personnel, hearing this clearly through their earpieces, aimed their weapons and were ready for battle.
