Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 18: A Thrilling Moment

The dense gunfire attracted those who were already hunting each other. Lan Xue glanced towards the source of the gunfire, confused, and thought of Luo Zheng. Shaking her head in disbelief, she focused on dealing with the current enemy. Meanwhile, the two who were pursuing Lan Xue heard the gunfire. Surprised, they turned to look and contacted each other through their earpieces, learning that their target had been hit by two bullets and was in critical condition, prompting them to quickly retreat.

Lan Xue waited a while and saw no activity from her enemies, which surprised her. She speculated that something might have indeed happened on the enemy's end. Gritting her teeth, she took off her helmet and slowly raised her gun. Seeing no one shooting, Lan Xue withdrew her helmet and threw it to one side—still no shots as expected, which deepened the expression of confusion on her face.

After waiting a while, Lan Xue decided to take a risk. She picked up her gun, rolled away from her cover, and quickly picked up her helmet, still without the anticipated sniper attack. She breathed a sigh of relief and no longer hesitated to rush towards the direction of the gunfire. Soon, Lan Xue reached a hillside. After concealing herself, she started observing through her sniper scope and saw a group of people huddled together, anxiously talking about something.

"Huh?" Lan Xue was surprised. She quickly climbed to the top of a large tree and continued to observe through her sniper scope. She soon found that the target was covered in blood, pale as paper, and seemed close to death. Lan Xue couldn't help but feel overjoyed. She thought of Luo Zheng, and a smile surfaced on her usually cold face, like the first thaw of ice and snow, stunning to behold.

To confirm that the target was indeed dead, Lan Xue didn't move, quietly staying in the tree canopy to observe. Through her sniper scope, she soon noticed that the target was barely breathing and pale, with eyes slowly closing, not far from death. Lan Xue sighed in relief but then suddenly remembered that Luo Zheng was still being pursued. The sound of distant gunfire was clear, and she quickly slid down the tree and ran towards the source of the gunfire.

The mission was accomplished thanks to Luo Zheng. Lan Xue knew Luo Zheng wasn't very skilled yet, but his potential was enormous and he would undoubtedly become an unmatched sniper in the future. More importantly, Lan Xue realized Luo Zheng was a lucky Buddha as his fortune was good. He had survived several times, even unexpectedly killing enemies. Luck, a mystical thing in battle, was extremely crucial, enabling one to survive longer than others.

Luo Zheng didn't consider himself lucky. Seeing more than a dozen enemies chasing him, he desperately ran forward. Fortunately, he was familiar with the dense woods from his youth, which made him faster than the others. After a while, Luo Zheng noticed the enemies couldn't keep up and became curious. Given the strength of these enemies, they shouldn't be lagging—perhaps these pursuers were different from the previous enemies he had encountered?

In any case, the immediate priority was to evacuate as quickly as possible. Luo Zheng didn't dare to think further and broke into a frantic run. He didn't know how much time had passed, but the gunshots behind him grew fainter and fainter. Luo Zheng breathed a sigh of relief, leaned against a large tree, and gasped for air to recover his strength.

After a while, Luo Zheng felt his breathing smooth out. He looked up at the sky, cloudless with the blinding sun. Thinking of his national revenge being avenged, he turned to personal revenge, quickly checked his weapon, and found he was out of bullets. He quickly changed the magazine and chambered a round.

Not far away, a person dressed in camouflage, covered in dry grass and barely distinguishable at first glance, with his face painted thickly and unrecognizable, heard the sound of chambering and immediately changed direction, coming over with a flash of cold murderous intent in his eyes. The cold barrel of his gun aimed at the large tree, and he tiptoed, moving sideways without making a sound. When he approached, he coldly called out, "Come out."

Luo Zheng, who had been preparing to evacuate, didn't expect to be discovered. Being silently approached definitely meant the enemy was one of those powerful ones he had encountered early on. Alarmed, he held his gun and shrank behind the large tree, pondering his next move. His hand suddenly touched a grenade. He quickly grabbed it, and just as he was about to pull the pin, he thought of the possibility that the enemy might shoot the thrown grenade, which would explode on him. What should he do?

All was silent on the other side of the tree. Luo Zheng didn't know where the enemy was, but he estimated they couldn't be far. Waiting would only make him more passive. He had to gamble. Thinking of the three-second delay on the grenade, an idea to distract and attack came to mind. Gritting his teeth, he fiercely pulled the pin of the grenade, threw his gun to one side, and peeked out from the other side. Spotting the enemy's position, he quickly threw the grenade.

"Bang!" The gun was flung far away.

"Boom!" The sound of a grenade exploding erupted.

All this might sound lengthy, but it was merely a blink of an eye. Luo Zheng, hiding behind a large tree, had no idea what the outcome was and didn't dare to go out. He drew his pistol, which Lan Xue had given him during their last fight and which he had never returned. After waiting a while with no noise from outside, which was very unusual, Luo Zheng took a risk. He crouched down, quickly peered out, then pulled back, barely making out someone lying motionless on the ground.

"Could it be?" Luo Zheng became excited. Peeking out again, he saw that the person had been blown beyond recognition. Relieved, he let out a breath of relief, stepped out from behind the tree, and walked towards the figure.

"Whoosh!" Suddenly a gunshot rang out, and Luo Zheng was terrified. Instinctively, he threw himself to the ground. He touched his head—it was fine; then he checked his body—it was also fine. Puzzled, he looked around and soon spotted a person lying not ten meters away from him, draped in camouflage, with an indiscernible face and his gun thrown far away.

Luo Zheng aimed his gun everywhere, but discovering nothing amiss, curiosity got the better of him. Then he heard a voice from the other side, "Good you're not dead, you're really lucky."

"It's really good to hear your voice; you scared me to death." Luo Zheng recognized it was Lan Xue by her voice, and he couldn't help but feel overjoyed. He quickly got to his feet and saw Lan Xue cautiously hiding behind a large tree, observing. He hurried over, but then he heard Lan Xue shout, "Don't come here, retreat to the east quickly, I'll cover the rear."

"Uh? Okay." Luo Zheng was startled, then saw Lan Xue raise her hand and fire a shot. A scream came from the woods. Without hesitation, he sprinted, running past the attacker, saw a gun on the ground, bent over to pick it up, and continued his frantic sprint, checking the ammo as he ran—it was still full. He quickly chambered a round, remaining vigilant as he looked around.

After running about two kilometers, Luo Zheng was so tired he couldn't run any further. He stopped to rest, barely catching his breath when Lan Xue appeared before him like a ghost, giving him a start. Once he recognized her, he relaxed and said with a wry smile, "Still you're faster. Everything okay?"

"Mhm, are you alright?" Lan Xue's cold face was filled with concern.

Luo Zheng could tell Lan Xue genuinely cared, warmed by the thought. Thinking about the series of events that had transpired, he said spiritedly, "Won't die, what's next?"
