Chapter 176: Discovering Something Strange
"Why not? Have you forgotten that damned undercover agent? The enemy already has intelligence on our base, which is why we took the initiative to strike first. It is not appropriate for the battle to rage at our base. However, we haven't lost them; they've headed west. Where do you think they're going?" Fox Wolf coldly retorted, letting the storm wash over his face, his helpless gaze sharpening.
"Mr. Fox Wolf, we have suffered heavy losses and are unable to assist you further. You see..." a man with a scarred face approached, cautiously speaking to Fox Wolf, afraid of angering him inadvertently. Fox Wolf's notorious reputation was well respected among these individuals, and no one dared challenge his authority.
"You've come at a good time, I was just looking for you. Go and call the other leaders, I have something to say." Fox Wolf coldly commanded, his eyes flashing a hint of murderous intent toward the scarred face, but it was well concealed. Combined with the blinding rain, the scar did not notice and hastily agreed before leaving.
Soon, the scarred-face brought about a dozen men, all of whom appeared tough but did not dare to act brashly in front of Fox Wolf. Seeing Fox Wolf's chilling gaze sweep over them, they all refrained from speaking. Seeing that these desperate leaders were still respectful, Fox Wolf was reassured and spoke coldly, "Today's battle was tough, and you all did your best. I appreciate it. For the deceased, an additional thirty thousand, and twenty thousand for the injured. Everyone, follow me back to the base. Upon arrival, you will be compensated. The fight is not over. Those who wish to stay will have their pay doubled, those who wish to leave can go respectfully. You know my character. Any questions?"
The men in camouflage suits saw Fox Wolf increase the rewards, said nothing. If everyone died, who would claim these rewards? It was just empty promises, irrelevant.
The scarred face and others exchanged glances. They were skeptical about Fox Wolf's promises, but having boarded the ship, it was not easy to disembark. Not only would they lose the promised rewards, but their brothers would have died in vain, and they might even risk being hunted by the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group in the future. It was a loss they could not afford, so they could only reluctantly continue on, all while forcing smiles and saying pleasant words.
After placating the troops, Fox Wolf waved his hand grandly, and the group began to assemble, retreating with their fallen comrades. The long procession was shrouded in a sense of mournful desolation, lacking the previous spirit and combativeness. The losses were substantial; it was a result that no one could bear, especially the scarred face, who now only had two subordinates left, both injured. His future seemed to only hold being swallowed by other powers or finding a quiet place to retire.
Fox Wolf watched the dragging procession with a grim expression as if his face were ancient, unmelting ice, the rain that fell upon it seemingly frozen. He waited for his companions in Jili suits to approach, then whispered coldly, "Notify headquarters, say the target is moving west, lock their position and keep us updated to avoid any encounters."
"Understood." The man in Jili suit respectfully agreed, pulling out a satellite phone.
Luo Zheng and his team were unaware that Fox Wolf had led his men back to the headquarters, nor did they know how the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group could lock onto their location. They were marching rapidly through the rain, their bodies heating up and turning the rainwater into mist swirling around them, unable to be concealed even by the thick camouflage suits.
Around noon, as the downpour gradually ceased, they reached a river and rested in the dense forest, eating some dry food and drinking water. Luo Zheng sat down with his back against a tree, vigilantly watching the forest ahead. As Lan Xue approached, he signaled to turn off his military headset before quietly asking, "How did the enemy know we were on the cliff? We can't move forward until we figure this out."
"Oh, what are you worried about?" Lan Xue coldly asked, sitting down next to him, back against the tree. She passed him a water bottle, tightened the lid after seeing Luo Zheng shake his head, and stared into the distance, her eyes filled with gravity. Luo Zheng was concerned, but Lan Xue was equally concerned, yet the situation was highly perplexing.
"I mean, assuming the enemy can detect our location, rushing in would be suicide. If the enemy can't detect us, how do they find us every time? With the heavy rain washing away all traces, if they're not following traces, what are they relying on? You have more experience than me, help me analyze this." Luo Zheng shared his worries.
"There are only three ways they could discover us: tracking the marks, electronic tracking, and spy satellite scans. If tracking is not the method used, that leaves the other two options. The problem is, among our two teams, only I carry a satellite phone. I ensure the phone remains without its battery, making it impossible for any high-tech means to remotely activate it. A satellite scan is even less likely; that's something nations possess, not something a mercenary group could have," Lan Xue explained earnestly.
"Is it possible to hack into a national spy satellite?" Luo Zheng asked.
"As far as I know, the leader of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group has a daughter who is skilled in computing. But hacking into a national satellite system is impossible. That's not a job one person can accomplish. Plus, even if such a hack were successful, it wouldn't be possible to maintain access to scan us consistently. Our signal corps isn't incompetent," Lan Xue explained earnestly.
"Is that so? Maybe you should make a call to check?" Luo Zheng still felt uneasy.
Lan Xue thought for a moment, judging that making a call wouldn't hurt, and took a waterproof bag from her backpack. She took out some parts and quickly assembled a satellite phone, then dialed a secret number. After the call connected, she coldly asked, "Check if our spy satellites have been compromised. What about other countries' satellites?"
After a while, Lan Xue's expression grew ugly, and Luo Zheng's heart sank. He let out a bitter laugh, but saw Lan Xue hang up the phone, dismantle the battery, store it in the waterproof bag, and put it back in her backpack. Looking around, she lowered her voice and said in a complex tone, "My contact said there's a signal source within our team. Someone is carrying a signal transmitter."
"What?" Luo Zheng was shocked, then immediately grew angry. If there was a traitor in the team, that would indeed be serious, but then he realized, if there really was a traitor, why would the signal source be on continuously? Moreover, it wouldn't make sense for them to come out and risk their lives; bullets didn't discriminate. What was going on?
"It's not my people, check yours," Lan Xue whispered.
"How do we check?" Luo Zheng's expression turned ugly. The Ghost Team was a newly formed squad; members were not yet well acquainted. However, everyone who entered the Special Forces had undergone political vetting; it made no sense for there to be a traitor. What in the world was happening?
