Chapter 174: Calculating Fox Wolf
After spotting Fox Wolf, Lan Xue's beautiful face was covered with frost, her gaze cold and devoid of any emotion fluctuation. In combat mode, Lan Xue was like a finely tuned killing machine, undisturbed by external factors, firmly locking onto Fox Wolf and preparing to shoot. To ensure preparedness, she whispered into her headset, "Mountain Eagle, ten o'clock direction, five hundred meters, target spotted, you fire the first shot."
Upon hearing Lan Xue's words, Luo Zheng also quickly searched the area. With five snipers from Ghost Team covering the pursuers, an assault would take some time. Add to that, Lan Xue along with Ghost Hand and Xue Mao had already set traps in the dense forest on the forward slope, and the situation was not yet critical. Through the sniper scope, Luo Zheng also spotted Fox Wolf, who was nimbly ducking behind a large tree, clearly aware of their presence.
"Damn it, this bastard," Mountain Eagle cursed angrily.
"Don't rush, wait for the opportunity," Lan Xue coldly reminded him.
Luo Zheng looked at the position where Fox Wolf had completely concealed himself, a tree so thick it would take three men to encircle it, and a single sniper bullet would never penetrate it. Firing simultaneously at one position might work with three shots, but by that time, Fox Wolf would have fled. Suddenly an idea struck him, and he said, "I'll blast him out with an explosive round, be ready."
"No, it's too far," Lan Xue said coldly.
"Give me the coordinates, I'll go," Luo Zheng said without hesitation, ready to take any risk to eliminate Fox Wolf. Dropping his gear, he picked up his sniper rifle and dashed out from cover, sprinting towards the hillside and straight into the woods. After descending the slope, Luo Zheng didn't stop but ran headlong towards the enemy.
The pursuers hadn't expected anyone to charge at them. Their bullets were all aimed at the cliff above; given the connected slope, the ground was about ten meters higher, which allowed the bullets to fly over Luo Zheng's head. After about two hundred meters, Luo Zheng saw many soldiers hiding in the dense woods, crazily firing towards the cliff, some just fifty meters away from himself.
Backed against a large tree, Luo Zheng calmly observed for a moment, found the visibility inadequate to spot Fox Wolf, looked up at the tree, gritted his teeth, and quickly climbed up, concealing himself behind some branches. Sniping from a tree is the most dangerous and is a position snipers resorted to only when necessary.
"Position set, target location," Luo Zheng mounted his sniper rifle on a branch, his eyes glued to the sniper scope, and searched rapidly yet calmly. Finding no sign of Fox Wolf, he hurriedly inquired quietly.
"Target lost, waiting for an opportunity," Lan Xue said coldly, her voice tinged with frustration.
Luo Zheng paused, then patiently began to wait. Seeing the pursuers pushing forward, getting closer to the cliff, and knowing the fight would soon become fiercely intense, he pondered if Fox Wolf was also banking on this. He hurriedly resumed his search.
No target straight ahead, none to the left. Luo Zheng moved the scope to the right, the higher vantage point broadening his view, and being relatively closer, he quickly spotted a target moving fast, seemingly headed towards the right to approach the cliff. Startled, he immediately whispered into his military headset, "Target spotted, three o'clock direction."
"Locked on," Lan Xue said coldly.
"Locked." Mountain Eagle also whispered softly.
"Wait for the opportunity. You fire the first shot, Mountain Eagle; you are responsible for the second; I'll take the third," Lan Xue said coldly, the teamwork against Fox Wolf showing their high regard for him and their resolute determination to succeed.
Luo Zheng nodded, discovering that the enemy had once again stopped, acting cautiously. He loaded his explosive bullet, adjusting the sniper scope and closing the distance in his field of view towards Fox Wolf, who looked around alertly like an enemy was imminent. In the blink of an eye, he had shrunk back, hiding behind a large tree, which made Luo Zheng admire him; this guy's instincts were freakishly good, sensing danger once again. Such a man was indeed a serious threat if not dealt with.
Facing such a master, there was only one chance. Luo Zheng calmly aimed at the empty ground beside the large tree where Fox Wolf was hiding. If it exploded, the explosive bullet would absolutely be a huge threat with no obstacles in the way, at a distance of three hundred meters, without needing to consider the wind speed. His index finger slowly pulled the trigger, whether he could take his revenge and succeed was in this critical moment, and amidst the pouring rain, a deadly intent exploded in Luo Zheng's icy gaze.
Just as he pulled the trigger, Luo Zheng sharply felt a piercing pain in the back of his neck, causing a great alarm, his body hair standing on end, and his mind buzzing loudly. He sensed a tremendous danger sweeping over him, his breath stopped, his soul seeming to plunge into an ice cave, and cold sweat gushed over him like paste. Driven by the instinct to survive, he reflexively threw himself to the side, forgetting he was in a tree. During his dodge, his arm muscles reflexively twitched.
The gun fired. Luo Zheng did not know if he hit the target, there was no time to care about that. Suddenly finding himself in mid-air, he crashed down towards the ground. Mid-fall, Luo Zheng regained some clarity, desperately twisting his body to ensure he landed on his feet. Fortunately, it wasn't too high, and the impact wasn't severe. In a crisis, he managed to control his body, rolled towards a nearby tree after landing, and leaned against it, gasping for breath.
The feeling of racing back from the brink of death was suffocating; even the battle-hardened Luo Zheng felt a lingering fear. Looking around, he saw many enemies had caught up; he was exposed. Lan Xue's anxious voice came through the earpiece, "What happened, are you all right? There are too many enemies, retreat quickly."
"It's okay, what happened?" Luo Zheng forced himself to calm down, took a deep breath, steadying his racing heart, and asked anxiously.
"He got away but I shot him in the leg," Lan Xue said somewhat regretfully.
"Too bad." Luo Zheng had not expected that even this would not kill Fox Wolf. Remembering the guy called Blood Wolf from before, he felt somewhat relieved; these guys' strength was terrifying, and their instincts were incredibly sharp, allowing them to make the most accurate decisions during a crisis. Shooting the opponent in the leg was already quite an achievement, and considered as avenging his own leg injury.
"There's also a sniper among the enemies, be careful. Ghost Team, cover me," after taking a breath, Luo Zheng realized the pursuers were nearly upon him, just thirty meters away. He shouted vehemently, pushed off with his feet, and sprinted forward, agilely dodging through the forest bent at the waist.
The members of Ghost Team swiftly adjusted their guns' aim and shot the enemies chasing close to Luo Zheng in the head. Seeing this, the remaining pursuers immediately took cover, no longer daring to move recklessly.
Luo Zheng charged up the slope, coming out of the forest, and saw enemy bullets raining down like a blockade on their hiding spots. He quickly dove to the ground, crawled forward a bit, and took cover behind a huge rock, breathing heavily. He saw Lan Xue dexterously approaching, as if she were a cunning cat.
