Chapter 171: Escaping Danger
In the stormy weather, Fox Wolf's face was cold as iron, and his indifferent eyes burst with intense killing intent, like a volcano about to erupt. His gaze swept over the panicked crowd, wishing he could eliminate them all on the spot. For this operation, Fox Wolf had gathered countless desperados and promised them great rewards, only to find that these usually ruthless killers had all turned into scared cats now.
Since receiving the secret report, Fox Wolf knew his enemies were coming, and he wouldn't miss such a perfect opportunity for revenge. Whether he could restore the reputation of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group depended on this. He had set up a clever ambush and had also gathered numerous desperados. Still, he had miscalculated one thing; Fox Wolf hadn't expected his opponents to break through by charging from the front, rendering many of his preparations useless, and forcing him into a passive pursuit.
The storm, compounded by the river barrier, caused him to miss the best chance to chase. Pursuing too aggressively could leave them vulnerable to mid-crossing attacks, which was a type of risk Fox Wolf typically avoided. He originally planned to wait until the rain stopped, having the Reconnaissance Radar, Fox Wolf wasn't worried about losing his target. Unexpectedly, someone had not crossed the river and had taken out the radar from nearby.
Consecutive failures completely enraged Fox Wolf. The desperados he had roped in were terrified. Furious to the core, Fox Wolf thought he might still need them later, so he suppressed his rage and let them retreat first. Clutching tightly onto the target he had barely caught on to, Fox Wolf didn't want to miss the opportunity. Moreover, the recent encounter made Fox Wolf feel that his opponent was the very person he was looking for.
The pursuers retreated as if granted a great pardon, Fox Wolf, gnashing his teeth in fury, took up his sniper rifle and pursued alone. Without the drag of others, Fox Wolf's speed increased significantly, and he became more cautious. The recent explosion made him realize he had been somewhat complacent. In the storm, Fox Wolf moved like a cheetah, his rhythmic body casting a long black shadow that soon vanished without a trace.
In his mad dash, Luo Zheng was unaware of the situation. However, after hearing another explosion, a hint of a smile crossed his cold face as he continued his relentless run, letting the rain wash over his face and body. The heavy black camouflage paint was washed off, totally unrecognizable, gradually revealing his true appearance.
Suddenly, a river appeared ahead. The path forward was dense with shrubs and full of thorns, leaving no place to set foot. Thinking of the pursuers who would arrive any moment, Luo Zheng gritted his teeth and jumped into the wide river. The river was not fast-flowing, but there were strong undercurrents. Holding his gun high, Luo Zheng swam across. The military backpack was highly water-resistant, so he didn't have to worry about water damage to the supplies inside, but he had to protect the gun carefully.
Crossing the river, which was several meters wide, took some time especially as the torrential rain blurred his vision, and the rip currents pulled at his body, making swimming extremely difficult. If Luo Zheng hadn't been familiar with water, he wouldn't have been able to move at all. Thinking of the pursuers, he gripped his gun high with one hand while frantically paddling with the other, speeding up slightly.
Reaching the middle of the river, Luo Zheng suddenly felt a tingling on his scalp, a premonition of danger. Growing up hunting in the forest had honed his instinct for sensing danger. He turned around abruptly and saw someone in the woods aiming a gun at him—it was Fox Wolf, and he was terrified.
With nowhere to go and no way back, standing in the center of the river, there was only one option left—to drop his weapons and gear and dive to avoid being shot. A gun is a soldier's lifeline; to abandon it meant certain death. But in a life-or-death moment, immediate survival took precedence. Being targeted by the formidable Fox Wolf, a single shot would surely kill him.
"Whiz!" A gunshot rang out just as Luo Zheng was preparing to shed his military backpack and dive. A screaming bullet sound filled his ears, his face turned pale, and his thoughts froze, leaving only one voice shouting: He's firing, the opponent is firing, it's too late, I'm dead, I'm dead…
"Shoo, shoo!" Again, two piercing whistles rang out, emitting heart-wrenching shrieks in the Void.
Luo Zheng shuddered at these sounds, snapping back to reality. With Fox Wolf's skill, there was no need to fire a second shot to kill him from a distance of about ten meters. What was going on? As Luo Zheng calmed down and looked back, he saw Fox Wolf awkwardly dodging something. Shocked, he turned back to the opposite shore and saw a familiar figure in a shooting stance, followed by several other familiar figures who dashed out of the woods and opened fire toward the direction of Fox Wolf with rhythmic bursts of gunfire, sounding like flowing musical notes.
"It's Lan Xue and the others!" Luo Zheng was overjoyed, a wave of relief washed over him, feeling as if he had escaped from the jaws of death. This near-death experience dramatically increased Luo Zheng's adrenaline and doubled his strength. He frantically swam forward.
With the cover from Lan Xue and the others, Fox Wolf was forced to retreat awkwardly, finding no opportunity to strike. Luo Zheng seized the moment to reach the shore and saw Lan Xue casting a concerned gaze at him. A warm feeling surged in his heart, appreciating how good it felt to be cared for; he nodded immediately, and Lan Xue, understanding, said, "Quick, retreat."
The voice spread through the military headsets to everyone's ears. Everyone turned around and ran. With the river blocking them and the enemy uncertain of the actual situation, they would not pursue. Lan Xue planned to use this time to run to safety. While running, Luo Zheng saw his teammates casting concerned looks at him, made a gesture, and his teammates nodded understandingly. Silently, they all dashed forward furiously.
In the pouring rain, they ran through the dense forest as if on flat ground. Half an hour later, a mountain ridge appeared ahead. The ridge was only about a dozen meters high, topped by a nearly hundred-meter cliff. The cliff looked as if it had been chopped by an ax, with only bare rocks visible; uneven and difficult to climb. Inside the recess of the cliff was a space that formed a good shelter from the wind and rain. Lan Xue checked both sides, saw the connecting forest to the ridge, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Luo Zheng had also quickly taken a liking to the spot, planning to suggest a rest, when he heard Lan Xue give the order. As everyone was well-trained elite soldiers, they naturally recognized the tactical advantage of the terrain. Without hesitation, they charged up the ridge and took shelter under the recessed cliff, which blocked the wind and rain, making the space below very dry. There were some feces already dried up and odorless, most likely left by some wild animal.
Everyone found a spot to sit down. Lan Xue sat opposite Luo Zheng and asked, "What happened?"
Luo Zheng glanced at everyone's inquiring eyes and didn't hold back, recounting the recent events. Everyone was startled to hear about the Reconnaissance Radar but relieved it had been destroyed. Mountain Eagle approached, lifted the camouflage fabric covering his face, and with his gun pointed downward, cold eyes intensely fixed on Luo Zheng, he earnestly asked, "Are you certain it was Fox Wolf?"
"Certain, is there a problem?" Luo Zheng asked, looking perplexedly at Mountain Eagle.
