Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 168: Layers of Suspicion

The strong always had their own dignity and pride. Luo Zheng, refusing to show weakness, quickly searched for targets and repeatedly fired his sniper rifle, every shot blasting an enemy's head. The dense gunfire around them masked the sound of the sniper bullets, and the dense forest concealed the flash from the muzzle, keeping Luo Zheng's sniping position undiscovered. Ignoring the sniper principle of "shoot and relocate," Luo Zheng continued to pick targets from one location, like a cold and ruthless Death God, harvesting the lives of every visible target.

After swiftly taking down five enemies, Luo Zheng saw Ghost Hand leading the charge with the others providing covering fire behind him, like a sharp knife piercing into the enemy with unstoppable combat spirit. Without the machine guns, the enemy's firepower was quickly suppressed and they began to retreat. Lan Xue, seeing the retreating enemy, felt a great relief in her heart, having underestimated this direction as merely an embroidered pillow with few enemies.

"Kill!" The completely enraged warriors charged forward with a roar, like fierce tigers. With the added shock of being ambushed and their transport plane being bombed, everyone was holding back a suffocating anger that now transformed into towering rage, infusing the bullets as they tore into the retreating enemy.

Luo Zheng slid down from the tree, changing his weapon while running. He saw the man called Mountain Eagle also descending from a tree, his face livid with rage as he sprinted. Luo Zheng didn't hesitate either; he chased after him. The two of them charged side by side like cheetahs and quickly caught up, almost simultaneously raising their guns and firing, swiftly killing any enemy in sight, each shot blasting a head.

Stimulated by his powerful comrades, Luo Zheng also performed exceptionally. Running, Luo Zheng noticed a cold face appearing behind a large tree, the corner of the lip twitching with a sinister cold laugh. Shocked, he instinctively rolled on the ground, shooting towards the hidden enemy by feel. When his roll brought him upright, kneeling on one leg as he aimed and searched, he found his adversary limp on the ground. Luo Zheng sighed in relief, pushed off powerfully and dashed forward.

After sprinting a few steps, Luo Zheng saw someone behind a tree fifty meters ahead aiming at Mountain Eagle, who was unknowingly focused on shooting another enemy. Startled, Luo Zheng aimed and fired without hesitation, delivering two rapid shots.

"Bang bang!" Seeing the enemy fall, Luo Zheng just breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Mountain Eagle firing towards him. Two bullets whistled past his ears, startling him. Instinctively looking back, he saw two enemies who had dashed from the forest now downed, large bloody holes gaping in their chests as blood gushed out.

Immediately realizing what happened, Luo Zheng's face went pale, his scalp tingling. He gratefully gave Mountain Eagle a thumbs-up, only to see Mountain Eagle turn and sprint forwards, completely ignoring him. Luo Zheng gave an awkward smile, reminding himself that there was no room for distraction in battle, and hurriedly continued his charge forward.

The enemy had dispersed into the forests on either side, taking cold shots without any effective ambush. The group pushed forward quickly, paying no mind to the enemies on either side. As rapid gunfire continued from behind, fears of lingering were dispelled. Luo Zheng purposefully lagged behind and saw that his teammates were catching up with him, running swiftly through the forest. He sighed in relief. After a week of intense training, everyone's speed in the forest had greatly improved.

Once they broke through the enemy's blockade, everyone continued running without looking back, each face pale as they dwelled on the somber reality. The unexplained ambush had left everyone both angry and pressured, for judging by the gunfire, the enemy had over three hundred troops. If not for their decision to charge ahead, who knew what might have happened.

After running for some time, as the sounds of gunfire faded into the distance, everyone relaxed a bit but kept moving. Luo Zheng noticed Lan Xue's frosty expression and tightly furrowed brows, a look of deep concern. Glancing ahead at Ghost Hand, who was a bit far ahead, he signaled for his teammates to quicken their pace to catch up, while he covered the rear.

"Boom!" Suddenly, a thunderclap broke the silence, startling Luo Zheng, who instinctively looked up. Just moments ago the sky had been clear, but now it was covered with dark clouds; the wind howled, rustling the trees, while the birds and animals panicked and ran, quickly vanishing without a trace.

Rain in the tropical rainforest came without warning, something Luo Zheng had grown accustomed to, even feeling somewhat relieved. The rain would wash away the traces on the ground, making it harder for the enemy to find them. Watching his teammates dash through the forest like cheetahs, Luo Zheng slowed down, intending to gauge the enemy's strength. The ambush had come too unexpectedly, and the invisible pressure made him more vigilant.

The operation was highly secretive; he could count on one hand the people who knew the details—all of them close confidants, unlikely to leak information. Even the transport plane's route had been changed midway by Lan Xue, making a leak improbable. So why did the enemy know their location so precisely and prepare an ambush along the way?

Everything pointed to a leak within their ranks. Luo Zheng thought of the Song family, but what he couldn't understand was why the members of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group didn't wait for them to make a move before counter-ambushing. Instead, they chose to strike first? The enemies they had just fought were fierce yet not particularly skilled in combat, resembling more of drug traffickers or some other armed group rather than the formidable capabilities typical of the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group members. What was amiss?

With heavy suspicions, Luo Zheng trailed behind, planning to find an opportunity to assess the situation. Through the military headset, Lan Xue's cold voice inquired, "Where are you? What happened?"

"You go ahead, I'll catch up," Luo Zheng responded decisively. Too many doubts weighed on his mind; without resolving these issues, they couldn't effectively fight.

The headset was silent for a moment, filled only with the sound of everyone breathing heavily. After a while, Lan Xue continued, "There's a river ahead. The heavy rain is about to start; we need to cross the river quickly or the rising water level will make it impossible later. Hurry up."

"Don't worry," Luo Zheng replied calmly, leaning against a large tree while looking around. He faintly heard shouts from behind him. Taking cover behind the tree, he listened intently, but the wind was too strong, and he couldn't make out the sounds. Meanwhile, more thunder rumbled in the sky as the impending heavy rain threatened to fall.

Thinking of the river ahead and the danger of falling behind, Luo Zheng dared not linger and was about to catch up when suddenly, noises came from the other side, startling him. He peered out and saw figures moving through the dense forest. His eyes narrowed when he spotted a familiar figure.

Before they set off, Lan Xue had shown Luo Zheng some intelligence on the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group. He knew this man as Fox Wolf, the second-in-command of the group with formidable strength. It was he who had knocked him off the cliff in their last encounter. Seeing an old foe spurred Luo Zheng into action, suppressing the thought of retreat as he quickly climbed a large tree to conceal himself within the dense foliage.
