Chapter 166: Ambushed
One week later, in the morning, the vast million mountains of the southwest.
The original dense forest was shrouded in mists above the stacked peaks, surrounding the towering mountains, like a paradise on earth. The ridges stretched undulating under the green canopy of lush and luxuriant treetops, where the cheerful chirping of birds and beasts resonated. Waterfalls cascaded down the cliffs and ravines, adding a burst of vitality to the primitive forest, presenting a tranquil scene.
Under the sun, a transport plane flew in from afar at low altitude, its propellers roaring as its powerful wind swayed the surrounding trees, forming green vortices in the verdant canopy. Panic-stricken wild monkeys scurried across the treetops while birds flew far away, thoroughly disrupting the peace of the tranquil forest.
Aboard the transport, Luo Zheng and Lan Xue, both dressed in camouflage suits, exchanged a glance. Their faces, heavily painted with thick camo paint, displayed their eyes sharply outlined in black and white, dancing with a fighting spirit. The mission was of extraordinary significance. Success was the only option. Luo Zheng glanced at his fully armed squad members, five people all prepared for landing.
To ensure the smooth execution of this operation, Luo Zheng had equipped everyone with Type 95 assault rifles for medium-range fire suppression, Type 95 sniper rifles for long-range control, and Type 95 pistols for close-quarters combat. Additionally, each person was equipped with suppressors that could be used on both rifles and pistols, as well as multi-functional bayonets suitable for rifles, featuring scissor parts, scissor hubs, filing parts, knife rings, handle mounts, cutting sections, and sawing sections. Each person carried a Type 95 military backpack filled with necessary items such as food, first aid kits, Night Vision Devices, aiming devices, ropes, military water bottles, and ample ammunition, along with a folded military shovel.
With uniform weapons, everyone's ammunition was interchangeable. They wore bullet-resistant vests, blast-proof military boots, bulletproof helmets, and digital jungle camouflage clothing, which were excellent for infrared surveillance and jungle concealment. In addition to the fully enveloping Ghillie suits, one could say they were armed to the teeth.
In the previous competition, nothing was allowed to be brought, and Luo Zheng experienced the pain of lacking weapons and gear. This time, equipped for jungle warfare, they faced the fierce and skilled Wild Wolf Mercenary Group. There could be no oversights; an extra bit of equipment could tip the scales in their favor.
"Descend in five kilometers, ready?" Lan Xue shouted loudly.
The helicopter's propeller noise was too loud; shouting was the only way to communicate. Luo Zheng nodded and looked at the other three soldiers who were resting with their eyes closed. Although almost identically equipped, since meeting, the three had been like non-existent, without interaction or motion, showing a lethargic demeanor.
Knowing some inside information, Luo Zheng dared not show any disrespect to these three who were brought by Lan Xue. Since Lan Xue did not introduce them, Luo Zheng did not inquire further, but their carefree expressions revealed that these three were no ordinary people. Because they were confident and strong, they were lackadaisical and unconcerned.
Suddenly, Luo Zheng saw all three simultaneously open their eyes, their expressions changing drastically as if unsheathing swords, exuding endless murderous intent. This abrupt shift surprised Luo Zheng greatly, filled with confusion, as he saw them simultaneously chamber a round and aim outside the cabin, faces full of cautious alertness, bodies tensed, eyes slightly closed, fingers on the triggers, ready for combat.
"What's the situation?" Luo Zheng exclaimed, looking towards Lan Xue, noticing that Lan Xue's expression had also grown solemn.
"Da da da!" Before Lan Xue could respond, suddenly intense gunfire burst from the ground, peppering the helicopter with sparks, the body of the helicopter instantly riddled with bullet casings. Luo Zheng turned pale with fright, watching the three men beside the cabin door aiming calmly and firing in short bursts below, needing no orders, working in perfect unison. Their previous vigilance turned into calmness, calmly shooting, calmly searching for targets, like precise combat machines, undisturbed by external interference.
Luo Zheng's face turned somber as he glanced at his teammates frantically dodging, his expression becoming awkward. Being soldiers themselves, the disparity in their reactions to danger was immediately apparent. His face darkened as he shouted, "Quick, enemy attack, fight back."
"Take cover," Lan Xue yelled loudly, noticing the crowd at the cabin door making them an easy target. Meanwhile, she picked up the communicator and barked, "Quick, turn around, find a place to land."
The pilot skillfully elevated the nose of the helicopter and changed direction. After a short while, an alarm blared inside the cabin, and a red light flashed a terrifying glow that made hearts pound. Someone yelled, "Not good, the tail's been hit, everyone prepare to land."
Everyone gasped as they saw the bullets continuously attacking them. The dense muzzle flashes were unsettling, and the thudding sounds of bullets hitting the fuselage were terrifying. Everyone's expressions grew grim. Luo Zheng didn't know why they were under attack, especially with such intense firepower. Feeling the helicopter begin to dive, he quickly grabbed the rail.
Two minutes later, the helicopter managed to break free from the dense firepower and hovered above a relatively open forest, only about ten meters from the ground. Luo Zheng was taken aback as he saw the three people brought by Lan Xue jump down like lightning. He quickly threw down a rope, signaling his teammates to jump.
Seeing Luo Zheng calmly throwing down the rope, Lan Xue nodded subtly, patted Luo Zheng on the shoulder and, with a stern face, leapt down in a swift motion. Luo Zheng, taken aback, grabbed the rope and followed suit. After landing, Luo Zheng rolled, knelt on one knee, and raised his Type 95 assault rifle on alert.
No enemies were detected. Luo Zheng watched as Lan Xue and her three companions charged into the forest opposite. He didn't move until all the teammates had repelled down. Then, raising his hand, he pointed vigorously at the forest, and everyone, crouching with their Type 95 assault rifles at their shoulders, advanced forward quickly.
"Boom!" A loud explosion. Just as Luo Zheng and the others had entered the forest, they heard a tremendous explosion, hurriedly turned back, and saw the transport helicopter torn apart into a fireball in the air. Debris flew around, some falling close to them, thudding into the ground, causing everyone to hide behind large trees, staying still.
"Thump!" A muffled sound, where the wreckage of the transport helicopter fell, burst into intense flames.
Luo Zheng stared dumbfounded at the scene, his face filled with disbelief. Seeing the charred pilot, he roared in fury and rushed out of the forest towards the helicopter. Lan Xue, shocked, sprinted out of the forest like a cheetah, tackling Luo Zheng to the ground, and coldly shouted, "It's too late, let's go!"
"Ah—" Luo Zheng roared, like an enraged tiger, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at the burning transport helicopter. He punched the ground, overwhelming anger and hatred churning within him. His face turned the color of steel, his teeth grinding loudly, unable to utter a word. Were his comrades who transported him here really gone?
"Da da da!" Intense gunfire erupted again.
