Chapter 156: Luo Zheng Wakes Up
An intruder attempted to assassinate a patient in the military hospital affiliated with the Military Committee, which is not open to the public. This was a grave matter. Upon learning of the situation, the director rushed over in urgency, inspected the body, and, after confirming the deceased was not an insider, awkwardly reported to the commander with a wry smile. The commander, unable to rebuke the director who held the rank of major general, simply reminded him to secure the exits, screen for suspicious individuals, and review the surveillance footage. The director readily agreed and issued the orders.
Being a military hospital, those who came here were either senior generals or patients with unique identities. The facility was staffed with a platoon of guards. When the guards learned that an intruder had caused a disturbance on their watch, they lost face; they became furious and sprang into action without needing to be told.
In the hospital room, Lan Xue, her face as cold as ice, glared at the commander and said through clenched teeth, "Whoever managed to infiltrate this place is definitely a professional. The guards won't be able to find anything. It's not safe here. Can we bring in more people?"
"Of course," the commander immediately responded, and went out to make a call.
Lan Xue took out her mobile phone, took a photo of the doctor, sent it out, and then made a call requesting the immediate investigation of the doctor's identity. After hanging up, a profound sense of guilt surged over her angry eyes. She slowly sat by the bed and mournfully said, "It's all my fault; you must wake up—please wake up soon?"
The commander returned, and after being briefed on the situation, he looked at Luo Zheng with admiration and said, "This young man is truly a born warrior; to come through like this, I'm impressed. Don't be too hard on yourself, little sister. He woke up just before, and your happiness, your complete focus on him, made you less alert, which is understandable. I would have done the same. He won't hold it against you. Since he's awakened, he will be fine; he probably just exhausted himself."
"I had thought that someone might harm him and yet I still let my guard down. I'm to blame for this." Lan Xue was drowning in deep guilt, unable to pull herself free, scarcely hearing the commander's attempt to console her. Her somber face expressed regret, no longer showing the icy, strong, and confident demeanor of the past, and she looked like a wounded child, helpless and in pain.
The commander sighed, retreated to the doorway, and softly closed the door. Some things couldn't be advised away; emotional wounds needed emotional salves. He wasn't too worried about Luo Zheng's safety now; since he had woken up, there were no longer any concerns about his surviving. Waking up again was just a matter of time. After waiting for a while and seeing the director rushing over with the guard platoon leader looking grim, he felt a twinge of worry.
"Commander, we've checked everything but found no leads. We don't know how the intruder got in. Someone killed a doctor and disguised himself to commit the attack. The surveillance only captured that lady calling for help, and you know the rest. However, we will continue to investigate," the director said apologetically.
"Hmm, security here is very tight; it isn't easy for anyone to infiltrate unless they're familiar with your security arrangements," the commander said irritably.
The guard platoon leader had an epiphany and, after giving the commander a respectful salute, hurried off gratefully. If the truth wasn't uncovered, he would bear full responsibility, so naturally, he was the most concerned. The director wasn't familiar with these matters, but seeing that the commander hadn't rebuked him, he too breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't that he feared the commander but rather that he did not want to escalate the situation. He then went into the room, carefully checked Luo Zheng's condition, and relieved, nodded at Lan Xue, "His recovery abilities are the best I've ever seen, and his will to live is very strong. He's past the critical phase and won't face any more problems. He'll probably wake up by this afternoon; you can rest assured."
The commander politely saw the director out and said to Lan Xue, "You can relax now. You haven't eaten in days; have something. I bought it just now; it's getting cold."
"I have no appetite, but thank you." Lan Xue, now that she knew Luo Zheng was safe, calmed down and gratefully said.
"Why the formalities among family?" the commander laughed, admiring Luo Zheng, who was still unconscious, and mused, "I used to hear the legend 'Guān Gōng does not open his eyes, and when he does, he slays people,' and I thought it was far-fetched. Now, I think it's not impossible. This young man can compete with Guān Gōng; he's bound to have a great fortune in the future—don't worry."
"I know," Lan Xue earnestly replied, her expression firming.
The commander closed the door gently and asked in a low voice, "Could the assassin have been sent by the Song family? Should we inform the old man and seek his support?"
"No matter who it is, this vengeance must be exacted, but not now. Let's wait until he wakes up; as you know, he prefers to handle his own affairs. As for grandpa, let's wait. I have my plans, and you should stay out of this matter," Lan Xue said decisively.
"You?" the commander said discontentedly. "Don't forget that you are half of the Li family by blood. If you are wronged or bullied, the Li family can't just sit by and do nothing. Someone hitting you is akin to hitting the Li family indirectly. This is no longer just between you and the Song family—understand?"
"Me?" Lan Xue defiantly began to argue, then swallowed her words, thought for a moment, and said, "I understand what you're saying, but now is not the time to make decisions. Give me some time. He too is involved, and I need to seek his opinion before deciding."
"Alright then, this lucky guy is really fortunate to have you so devotedly looking out for him. If he ever dares to let you down, I'll take him out," the commander grumbled.
"You dare?" Lan Xue glared at the commander discontentedly.
The commander left with a wry smile, shaking his head and stood by the door.
At that moment, a phone call came in. Lan Xue answered and listened for a while, her brows furrowed, her expression frosty. After hanging up, she whispered coldly, "An international assassin? Well done, Song family, just wait, we will settle this score with you eventually." She looked at the unconscious Luo Zheng, and her icy face softened with warmth.
Holding Luo Zheng's hand, Lan Xue said passionately, "Wake up, don't sleep anymore, there's so much waiting for you. If you keep sleeping, your enemies will walk all over you. You might not care, being as calm as you are, but I can't stand it anymore. If you don't wake up, I'm giving up on you." Saying this, her eyes started to moisten.
"You can't give up on me." A weak voice responded.
"Love someone else…" Lan Xue blurted out reflexively, then she swiftly realized, and her face turned to one of surprised joy as she looked at Luo Zheng, unable to continue her words.
"Being hurt…must be disappointing for you." Luo Zheng said guiltily in a soft voice, his eyes filled with intense self-reproach.
"Not at all, how could that be? You did great," Lan Xue said, crying tears of joy. "We still have time. I believe in you, and there's still a chance. Being injured is nothing; who doesn't get hurt?"
"Thank you," Luo Zheng asked joyously, his eyes brimming with anticipation and fighting spirit.
