Strongest Soldier King

Chapter 153: Race Results

In the hospital ward, Lan Xing knocked Lan Xue out and excitedly ran outside to signal the squadron leader to come in. The squadron leader glanced at the sleeping Lan Xue, then looked at Lan Xing with alarm. Lan Xing explained, "It's okay, I gave her some sleeping pills."

"You actually went through with it? Was the dose not too large?" the squadron leader asked, concerned.

"Double dosage," Lan Xing said, noticing the squadron leader's complexion darken and expecting anger, he quickly added, "Without it, there was no better solution. Her constitution is too good, a single dose was ineffective. I checked with the doctor, it's harmless, but she will need to sleep for a while longer. You stay here on guard, just in case."

"Just in case? This is the Military District Hospital, there are guards everywhere...?" the squadron leader said in surprise. Seeing Lan Xing's face turn solemn, he got a shock and looking outside, he said, "Are you keeping something from me?"

"Just stay here and keep watch, okay? You were the one who said to let her sleep. Now that she's out, if anything happens, do you want us sisters to stop talking? I'm telling you, if it comes to that, I'll say it was you who told me to do this, you won't be able to wash your hands of it either," Lan Xing said indignantly.

"Fine, it's not like I have anything better to do, might as well not pick up the competition results," the squadron leader said with a wry smile. Seeing how serious Lan Xing was, he couldn't help but become nervous and readily agreed, "Alright, I'll stay and keep watch. You're impossible to argue with. By the way, how did you get here?"

"Swans guarding toads; the whole Beijing Crown Prince Party is talking about it. I was curious, so I came to see what this toad looks like. Oh right, he's your soldier, isn't he? Tell me, what's so special about him that he managed to attract the renowned Ice Beauty?" Lan Xing said with a mischievous smile, not revealing the actual situation.

The squadron leader didn't suspect anything, and asked back in astonishment, "It's spread all over Beijing, why is that?"

"What do you think?" Lan Xing countered.

The squadron leader was taken aback, but then he thought of the Song family, his complexion shifted slightly. As the scion of a prominent family, the squadron leader was not dense and immediately realized there was much more going on. Glancing at the unconscious Luo Zheng and then at the sleeping Lan Xue, he instructed, "You should carry her to another bed and cover her with a blanket, don't let her catch a cold."

Seeing that the squadron leader had guessed the situation, Lan Xing said no more. After moving Lan Xue to an adjacent bed and covering her with a blanket, she looked toward Luo Zheng and asked, "Tell me about him, will you? I wonder if he's lucky enough to become my future brother-in-law."

"Him?" the squadron leader said with a bitter smile, "Hard to say. I haven't known him for long, and I know very little about what's between him and your sister. If I had to point out something, it's that he's a very unique person. What exactly makes him special, I apologize, I'm neither a woman nor directly involved, so I can't explain clearly for the moment."

"You're always so careless, I don't know what my sister-in-law sees in you," Lan Xing commented, not satisfied, but she chewed over the squadron leader's words in her mind. Special, he didn't seem that special—neither tall nor handsome, and definitely not wealthy. Could it be he really has some talent? But that's unlikely, right? How much talent can a soldier have after less than a year of service?

The two of them chatted casually, neither hitting the nail on the head, as time swiftly passed. Two hours later, the squadron leader received a phone call, and after listening, his expression immediately brightened, arousing Lan Xing's curiosity immensely. Once the squadron leader hung up, she inquired, "What's up, did Little Mi agree to have kids with you?"

"What rubbish are you talking about? I can't say such things carelessly; what if your sister-in-law hears it—would I still be able to live?" the squadron leader scolded, clearly in a great mood, barely containing his delight as his face flushed with excitement, his eyes narrowing joyfully to slits.

"Look at you all happy, if it's not about Little Mi, then what? Come on, tell me," Lan Xing pressed curiously, suddenly remembering something and asking in astonishment, "Did the competition results come out? Did you—"

"Yes, just like my brilliant little sister, the results are out. We got fourth, out of the eight teams that participated, our performance was in the middle, and now everything has cleared up." The captain spoke joyfully.

"I heard you were the first team to withdraw from the contest. How could you have such a result?" Lan Xing asked in surprise, her face full of disbelief.

"The results have been verified again, and there's no mistake. Who would have thought, who would have thought." The captain said excitedly, rubbing his hands and grinning like a child.

"Who would have thought what?" Lan Xing was even more confused.

The captain explained excitedly, "Who would have thought that everything these rascals said was true. The five of them took down more than three hundred people, including five mercenaries, who are said to be national fugitives wanted for major crimes. This is an unexpected merit. Moreover, they took out the second-in-command of the East Turkestan movement, along with several high-ranking members. Their identities have all been confirmed without a doubt, earning them fifty points, just a few points shy of third place. If they hadn't withdrawn, even coming in last would have allowed them to squeeze into third place. It's such a pity."

"You should be content with what you got. Haven't you seen that they're still lying in bed, their fate uncertain?" Lan Xing scolded disapprovingly.

"Uh?" The captain gave an awkward smile, explaining, "You're right to scold me. I got too excited."

"You…" Lan Xing said with irritation, wanting to give a few words of scolding, but couldn't find better words to say.

After they chatted casually for a few sentences, a noisy commotion came from outside, growing closer. The two exchanged glances, on alert. The captain whispered, "You go open the door, be careful. I'll cover you." As he spoke, he drew a handgun from his back, loading a round into the chamber.

Lan Xing nodded and carefully approached. She waited at the door for a while and when she heard someone knocking, she called out, "Who is it?"

"Open the door, our Commander is here to visit the wounded," a vigorous voice shouted.

Lan Xing glanced at the captain who had put away his gun, replacing it with a smile and quickly stepped forward, opening the door and saying, "The Commander is here? Please come in."

"Is Little Li here too?" A crowd of people flowed in from outside. The lead major general officer, who was all smiles, was indeed the Commander of the Northwest Group Army. The Commander glanced at Lan Xing, not recognizing her, and then his eyes fell on the hospital beds where he noticed there were patients in both. His expression changed slightly as he looked at the captain, asking somewhat dissatisfied, "Why are there other patients here? What is this? How can we treat our heroes like this? How can they rest with all this noise?"

The captain was startled, and not knowing how to explain the identities of Lan Xing and her sister, he awkwardly said, "Commander, they're not patients, they've come to take care of Luo Zheng, one of our own. The one in the bed hasn't had a good night's sleep for over ten days."

"One of our own?" The Commander thought the captain had transferred them from the army to care for Luo Zheng, so he looked at Lan Xing with a smile and said, "You are more thoughtful indeed. A woman comrade takes better care of people than us rough men. You two have worked hard. He is our Group Army's great hero. Make sure to take good care of him."

Lan Xing could hardly stand the Commander's bureaucratic jargon and formalities. Seeing the look from the captain, not wanting to put him in a difficult position, she reluctantly replied, "Yes, please rest assured, Commander."
