Chapter 123: Tracking and Rescue
Luo Zheng's capabilities had been witnessed by everyone, and the enemy that even made Luo Zheng anxious, made everyone realize a serious problem— the enemy was stronger than imagined, and their numbers unknown. Along the way, everyone had selectively ignored Luo Zheng's reminders and overlooked the strength of these mercenaries.
"Just tell us what to do next," the scholar asked urgently, his face filled with even deeper guilt. He was filled with regret and anger at his own carelessness, his clenched fists turning somewhat pale, veins standing out on his arms, and his wide-open eyes flickering with fiery red anger.
"In the recent battle, we suffered severe ammunition losses. You guys stay here to clean up the battlefield; I'll go ahead and chase them, leaving marks along the way," Luo Zheng said calmly, without any specific intelligence, there was no starting point for a rescue plan.
"No, it's too dangerous for you to go alone; I'll go with you," the scholar immediately objected.
"If there's an ambush ahead, me going alone might confuse the enemy. They might let me pass and target you guys instead, which means you're not necessarily less at risk than I am. So, it's not appropriate if too many of us follow. Don't worry, I'll be fine," Luo Zheng explained calmly. He squatted down, picked up three stones, and arranged them into a triangle, adding, "The direction indicated by the largest obtuse angle is our marching route."
Following human instinctive thinking, acute angles are more conspicuous and typically used for indicating direction, but Luo Zheng did the opposite. The gardener wanted to say something, but the scholar stopped him, "Alright, just be careful. We can catch up in no more than five minutes. Without communication devices, any action has to be decided by you on the spot."
"Don't worry, I won't mess around," Luo Zheng said coldly. He picked up the magazines from a few bodies nearby and ran off. The armed personnel all used AK47s, which had interchangeable ammunition. Properly equipped, Luo Zheng carried a sniper rifle, an AK47, two M16s, and around ten magazines, looking like a mobile combat platform. He disappeared from everyone's sight in a blink without having time to say goodbye.
Watching Luo Zheng leave, the scholar sighed, "Brothers, we've all underestimated Brother Luo Zheng's capabilities. If I had taken it a bit more seriously, this wouldn't have happened. I'll take responsibility for this. It's very dangerous for Brother Luo Zheng to go alone; we should follow as quickly as possible. If the ambushing enemies see us coming, they won't target Brother Luo Zheng. Everyone, move quickly."
"Yes," the gardener and the Monk responded, and the three of them dispersed quickly to collect ammunition and grenades. Without logistic support, all resources had to be acquired from what they could find.
Worried about Luo Zheng's safety, everyone hastily gathered enough ammunition and hurriedly followed. In the vast wilderness, Luo Zheng's trace had already vanished. The three exchanged glances, seeing the shock in each other's eyes — was he that fast? They involuntarily picked up their pace, advancing in a triangular formation. After about ten minutes of rapid movement, distant gunfire could faintly be heard. The three exchanged surprised looks and quickened their steps even more.
At that moment, Luo Zheng was lying in ambush on a hillside, sniping at enemies ahead. There had been no ambush along the way, and worried about the farmer, he had chased desperately and finally caught up with the enemy. With about fifty people, the enemy was pushing the farmer along, who appeared very distressed. Filled with annoyance, Luo Zheng took cover on the hillside and, in one breath, took out three enemies from behind while the others scrambled for cover.
Without the Wild Wolf Mercenary Group's men, Luo Zheng was confident he could annihilate all the enemies before him and rescue the farmer. However, these foes were not foolish either. After concealing themselves well, they did not fire. Luo Zheng searched around, yet the vast wilderness and mountains were devoid of any signs of people; dozens of enemies seemed to have vanished into thin air.
"Damn it," Luo Zheng bit his teeth in anger, punched the ground, and dust flew. With clenched steel teeth and an angry, murderous look on his pale face, he carefully scanned every inch of the ground. Suddenly, he saw someone bending over and moving. Luo Zheng did not hesitate to pull the trigger. The bullet roared out, entering through the temple of his target, spraying a burst of red and white matter.
The bullet mercilessly shredded the enemy's central nervous system. The powerful kinetic force knocked the enemy to the ground, motionless as the thick scent of blood spread. The precision of the shot made others afraid to show themselves too readily. Luo Zheng, lacking further opportune sniping chances, was very frustrated when he heard a voice drift over, "Brother, well done, haha, forget about me, beat up these sons of bitches."
"Is that the farmer?!" Luo Zheng was a mix of surprise and joy. He searched through his sniper scope but didn't see the farmer. The distant mountains fell silent once again, with only the wind blowing dust around and dissipating into the void. The sun was about to set; any further delay would be detrimental to everyone.
"Rumble!" The sound of car engines came, and Luo Zheng looked in the direction of the noise. Three military vehicles were approaching; leading them was an off-road jeep followed by two trucks, their contents hidden by tarpaulins. They were speeding toward the concealed enemies. Luo Zheng was greatly surprised, quickly aiming over and noticing the drivers looked similar to the armed men; it must be enemy reinforcements.
The arrival of enemy reinforcements meant the difficulty of the rescue had increased. Luo Zheng was extremely annoyed, his gun aimed at the off-road jeep's driver. As he was about to pull the trigger, Luo Zheng lowered his gun slightly and aimed at the gas tank instead. The vehicle was moving fast, about eight hundred meters away—difficult to target.
Luo Zheng's gun tracked the moving target, his mind constantly calculating the distance and wind speed, estimating the lead. Realizing he wasn't confident, he took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down, and channeled his family's Breathing Skill. Soon, Luo Zheng entered a serene state, his thoughts moving with the vehicle's speed, feeling its bumps and running patterns. Gradually, Luo Zheng felt as if he were the off-road jeep itself, his gun swaying rhythmically with it.
Soon, Luo Zheng felt the jeep jolt again. The next moment, the falling point was distinct in his mind, the lead and sniping spot also emerging clearly. Almost as if possessed, Luo Zheng pulled the trigger, and the bullet, carrying his icy killing intent, whistled into the void, tracing a beautiful arc.
"Boom!" The off-road jeep exploded into a massive fireball, tumbling into the air and being hit by the following truck, flung to the side. The truck paused briefly, then accelerated and rushed forward.
Watching the burning jeep, Luo Zheng felt no excitement; with the two trucks hurrying away and losing the opportunity to snipe, and considering that the enemy might escape in the trucks, the difficulty of rescuing the farmer increased. Luo Zheng's heart sank, and, gritting his teeth tightly, he made a grinding noise.
