Chapter 103: The Fierce Scholar
The pursuers had sworn not to stop until they caught them, not just tailing them but also splitting forces to flank and encircle from both sides. After a while, the scholar would be in trouble. Luo Zheng knew he couldn't wait any longer. The others were unarmed and couldn't hold off these desperadoes. Gritting his teeth, he quickly charged forward. As he ran, the wind whooshed past his ears. Luo Zheng worried about the scholar's safety and was frantic, no longer caring about his own safety. Fortunately, the enemy's attention was all on the scholar and they didn't notice Luo Zheng.
Soon, Luo Zheng threw himself to the ground behind a slope, seeing that the scholar had charged past not far from him and seemed to want to reach the opposite slope. Without hesitation, he fired three shots at the enemies behind the scholar—pop, pop, pop!—hitting one. Luo Zheng didn't have time to observe the results and quickly retreated behind the slope to change his shooting position.
From another concealed slope, Luo Zheng saw the scholar rush up the hillside toward him and breathed a sigh of relief, muttering praise for his smarts. But upon seeing several armed militants stop and take a kneeling position to aim at the scholar, he was horrified and quickly switched his gun to automatic fire, sweeping the aiming militants ferociously.
"Da-da-da!" Several armed militants were struck down, but more took cover and aimed at the scholar. Seeing that his shooting position was inadequate and that he couldn't see the hidden enemies, Luo Zheng took a deep breath, jumped out from the slope, and madly dashed up the hillside, switching his gun to single-shot mode. He ran with the gun at shoulder level, head down, aiming and shooting at the enemies while running.
The scholar, running for his life and astounded to see Luo Zheng expose himself to save him, suddenly spotted a huge rock ahead. With a swift movement, he dove for it, hiding himself behind it. Peering out cautiously, he was shocked: Combat sniping?
There are three types of snipers. One is the concealed sniper, who camouflages themselves and waits for the target to appear before making the kill, a skill mandatory for an intermediate sniper, but also a profound technique. Those who can reach this level are the masters among the experts. The third kind is three-dimensional sniping, a skill requisite for advanced snipers. Such experts are legendary, turning into moving battle platforms, equipped with both long and short firearms, able to effortlessly take out the enemy at any distance, in any climate and terrain, whether the target is moving or stationary, no matter where hidden, and regardless of the surrounding danger's intensity, even capable of slaying generals in an army of millions.
Setting aside the legend of the moving battle platform, in an army of millions, those who can perform rapid movement sniping are extremely few. The scholar never imagined Luo Zheng capable of combat sniping, and moreover, with each shot resulting in a headshot. The calmness, precision, and composure were breathtaking. He couldn't help but laugh and curse, "You little rascal, you really kept yourself well hidden. Now, let's see you explain this."
The enemy, riled by Luo Zheng's precise gun skills, fired back furiously, even tossing grenades. Luo Zheng found himself in grave danger and dared not linger. He retreated swiftly and as he passed by the scholar, he shouted, "You run first, I'll cover the rear." As he spoke, he dove to the ground and quickly rolled back up.
The scholar saw everything clearly; the moment Luo Zheng hit the ground, a barrage of bullets swept over. Had he been even half a second slower, Luo Zheng would have been gone. The scholar was shocked by his keen danger perception and quick reflexes. Surely, this guy must have crawled out of a pile of corpses. At the thought, the scholar's blood boiled, and instead of running away, he charged at the enemy, hunched like a cheetah. He dove, rolled, sprung up, and rushed forward, dropping down again and rolling...
While running, the scholar was like a precise computer, always judging the enemies' shooting positions accurately, moving out of the way before their bullets arrived. The process was smooth and natural. As he got closer, the scholar let out a loud howl, leaped three to four meters in a tiger pounce, landed, rolled up, and suddenly sprinted to the other side, narrowly evading the oncoming bullets. After rushing a few steps more, he pounced again, grabbing an enemy and using him as a shield.
"Pup, pup, pup!" Several bullets hit the enemy he was holding. The scholar didn't hesitate, snatched the gun from the enemy's hand, and hid behind the body, firing at several nearby enemies.
The enemy had never expected Scholar to be so fierce, charging head-on through their gunfire. Not only had he broken through the spray of bullets, but he had also counterattacked and seized guns from them, leaving them shocked. By the time they reacted, it was already too late; five enemy combatants were gunned down on the spot. Scholar's scalp tingled, and he quickly threw himself to the ground, narrowly avoiding a sweep of bullets. With a counter sweep, he shot down the enemies trying to ambush him.
Luo Zheng watched Scholar's dazzling performance in amazement. The audacity to attack over a distance of a full hundred meters, braving the bullets for less than ten seconds, struck him as terrifying. Seeing Scholar rolling continuously to dodge bullets, Luo Zheng immediately provided covering fire.
With Luo Zheng's precise covering fire, Scholar found an opportunity to breathe. He leapt and ran across the battlefield, quickly retreating after a few swift bounds. Luo Zheng noticed that Scholar had acquired three extra guns—one in his hand and the rest loaded with magazines. Delighted, Luo Zheng once again dashed out from cover, unleashing a fierce spray of gunfire at the hidden enemies.
"Run!" Scholar shouted loudly. The two of them dashed toward the slope above, one on the left and the other on the right.
"Pop, pop, pop!" Bullets chased their tails, striking the ground and sending dirt flying in all directions, creating scenes fraught with danger.
As they ran, Luo Zheng felt a chilling breeze on his back. The sensation of dancing with the Grim Reaper was suffocating. Desperate to survive, Luo Zheng gritted his teeth and charged madly. After reaching the top of the slope, Luo Zheng dove to the ground, sending dirt flying. His chest ached from the impact; feeling the bullets whisk past his back, he spit out a mouthful of dirt and laughed. The thrill of a narrow escape from death was truly exhilarating.
The sound of gunfire grew closer behind him, and Luo Zheng, without a moment to spare, scrambled up and found a hiding spot. Seeing the enemies drawing much closer, he unhesitatingly raised his gun and began firing. Suddenly, he heard several bursts of gunfire beside him. Glancing up, he saw that other comrades had rushed over and, having received weapons from Scholar, were furiously returning fire. Luo Zheng couldn't help but smile. As bullets landed close by, kicking up dirt, he quickly gathered his wits and calmly began firing aimed shots. With the additional firepower suppressing the enemy, he didn't have to worry about them charging immediately, providing the perfect opportunity to hunt them down.
"Brothers, spread out and beat these bastards," Scholar roared.
"Yes!" everyone answered in unison, scattering to both sides. The five men, with momentum like a sweeping torrent, exuded an intense fervor for battle. Their combined gunfire pinned the enemy down on the mountainside, preventing them from advancing an inch, and their precise shots deterred the enemy from daring to show their heads.
