Chapter 8: Battleground Simulation
Azrael took the elevator up to the top floor, staring at his reflection in the mirrored door. Azrael's mind drifted back to what had happened that day, and he started to wonder what he was going to do from now on.
He might have an EX Rank in Divine Potential, but what was the point of that if he couldn't even use it?
Azrael wasn't a fool, and he knew that there was no way he could hope to compete against the other students in the school without a God Aspect. Azrael was one of the most physically gifted students at the school. In a pure test of strength using nothing but their mortal bodies, there was no student that would be able to challenge Azrael other than Sunny, but what was the point of having that if he didn't have a God Aspect?
The one thing that truly determined a demigod's power?
A God Aspect was the only way Azrael could advance past his mortal limits! Without the God Aspect, he could barely fight against even the weakest demons, and there was no way he would be able to walk through the veil into the Null Zone!
"Fuck!"
Azrael cursed loudly as he ran his hand through his hair, his thoughts threatening to overwhelm him! This was absolute bullshit!
Did the world think he was some sort of plaything!?
Even the weakest demigod had a God Aspect, and here he was, an EX rank without an Aspect!
Ding!
The elevator door slid open. Azrael straightened up and saw another girl standing outside. She had an amused look on her face, likely because she had seen Azrael hunched over earlier. Azrael stared at her through his rough hair before he turned away as the girl entered the elevator.
Azrael recognized her. She was Cleopatra, a third-year at their school. She had long black hair tied into a ponytail behind her and striking dark purple eyes.
She was one of the most popular third-years in their school and a demigod blessed by Thor, the Norse god of thunder. She was always competing with the strongest demigod in the school for the top position, and since the strongest demigod was blessed by Zeus, they both had similar God Aspects, which made their rivalry even more intense.
Cleopatra was carrying a large bag slung over her shoulder, which likely held a weapon she had been using to train.
"Aren't you getting off?"
Cleopatra spoke, noticing Azrael didn't move for a while.
Azrael nodded calmly before grabbing his bag and moving off the elevator. Cleopatra knew who Azrael was, and she also knew that he was feeling horrible about what had happened in the ceremony, but she didn't care enough to ask how he was doing.
Azrael walked out of the elevator, but before he left, he heard her speak up.
"I heard from a teacher that you got an EX Rank in Divine Potential. Is that true?"
Azrael turned and glanced at Cleopatra when she asked this.
Cleopatra was staring straight at him with an inquisitive look, waiting for an answer. Azrael wondered how in the world the news had spread that quickly. It hadn't even been two hours since the ceremony ended!
Cleopatra hummed once she saw the look on his face. She didn't even need to hear his answer to know that her teacher had been right. She just couldn't believe that a child of a god of darkness had an EX Rank potential.
Cleopatra had an S Rank in Divine Potential, but after hearing that there were two S Ranks and an EX rank in the current first years, she couldn't help but be intrigued. This was going to be an interesting year.
Cleopatra knew that a lot of people were worried about what Azrael would be able to do with an EX Rank, but she also knew that they didn't have to worry about anything since he was someone who didn't even have a God Aspect. At the end of the day, that EX rank potential was going to be wasted on someone like him.
Cleopatra's lips curled into a small smile as she pressed the button to close the elevator door, speaking in amusement.
"Not bad for a reject."
Azrael's eyes darkened with anger, but Cleopatra only laughed louder upon seeing his reaction. She knew that Azrael thought she was mocking him, but in truth, she was congratulating him. If Azrael had somehow ended up with an EX Rank potential while also having a God Aspect, then life would be so much harder for him. People would have been afraid of what he would do.
And people have been known to do horrible things when they are afraid.
In a way, Azrael was lucky not to have a God Aspect at all.
_____
Azrael threw his bag onto the bench at the side once he got to the training room, and he grabbed his bandages before angrily wrapping them around his wrists!
Not bad for a reject?
Who the hell was she calling a reject!?
Azrael put his hands on his hips and let out a long breath to calm himself before he went over to the side where a holographic screen was floating. Azrael was experiencing too many emotions at the same time now because of the results of the Divine Potential reading.
Normally, he would never allow people's words to get under his skin, but he was too angry right now to just allow things to roll off his back. Azrael needed to take some time for himself and calm down before he could return to how he normally was.
The holographic screen in front of Azrael displayed a message.
[Please place your hand on the reader to activate the Simulation.]
Azrael pressed his hand on the palm reader, and the screen scanned his palm print before another message popped up.
[Azrael Mortis. First Year]
[Mortal Ranking: D Rank]
[God Aspect: Not Applicable]
[A suitable challenge has been curated to suit your special requirements, and the system has detected no specific weapon for training. Would you like to borrow a weapon, Azrael?]
"Yes."
[Please input the weapon type]
"Katana."
[Please input the weapon length.]
"1 meter."
[Command accepted. Please take a simulation piece and head towards the battleground to begin your simulation.]
Azrael started to head into the battleground and grabbed a pair of glasses along with a cylindrical rod from the side. The battleground was a series of cubicle rooms that had been arranged side by side. There were a total of five battlegrounds in this training room, and Azrael could see that three of them were already occupied. Normally, students would need to reserve a time to use the battleground, but since today had been the ceremony, there weren't that many people who would come here.
Inside, the battleground was pure white. The floor was movable, making you feel like you were standing on an omnidirectional treadmill, and cameras lined every wall, tracking the user's every motion.
The battleground simulations were created to prepare students for their real fight against the daemons. In the program, the students would fight against a simulated entity that looked and acted just like a daemon right down to their tiniest movements.
The simulations were so realistic that it was nearly impossible to tell the difference between the simulated daemon and what a real demon would look like, which was why it was so popular with the students!
If you are capable of beating the daemons here, then you would have a very realistic idea of what your battle strength would be like in the outside world!
Azrael slipped on the glasses and held the cylindrical piece in his hand while stepping into the cubicle battleground. The walls instantly lit up, and a voice announced that the simulation was about to begin.
Azrael watched as the room changed; its white walls began to transform into a vast wilderness with nothing but dust and stone that seemed to span for miles.
Azrael looked down and saw that the cylinder in his hand had transformed into a sleek, meter-long katana with a black hilt and a gleaming silver blade. He could still feel the cylinder in his hand, so the katana was just another simulation. But with the weight distributed properly, the cylinder felt no different from what it would feel like when holding a real katana.
Then, the ground trembled.
DOON!
DOON!
SCREECH!
From a distance, Azrael heard the sound of something digging itself out of the ground. A hand burst through the sandy wilderness before three more hands clawed out at the surface as well.
The four limbs twisted and slammed into the ground, and together, they pulled out a daemon.
