Chapter 116: Chapter 117: The Seal's Turmoil
Sunlight blinded the group as they emerged from the spiral staircase, but Chen Jiuzhang flinched, his hand shooting to his head. The crystal key, now fused to his palm, pulsed with conflicting light and dark energy. "It's... fighting," he gritted out, shadows rippling across his forearm.
Su Nian caught him as his knees buckled. "Easy! You just became the universe's living pressure cooker—take it slow." But her joke fell flat as Zhang Chengying pointed to the horizon.
The Gui Xu Secret Realm's sky had turned a sickly purple, with tendrils of shadow curling from where Chen Jiuzhang stood. "The primal darkness is reacting to your instability," Lyra said, scanning the shifting runes on her forearm. "If you can't master the balance, the seal will—"
"Explode," Wu Laogou finished, leaning on his staff. His eyes flickered yellow for an instant as the shadow fragment urged him on. "But there's a place in the 秘境's core where light and dark naturally coexist. A 'Harmony Pool' that could stabilize you."
Luna frowned, starlight dancing on her fingertips. "I've never heard of a Harmony Pool. Are you sure this isn't a trap?"
"Do we have a choice?" Chen Jiuzhang pushed himself up, shadows retreating from his skin. "I can feel the darkness spreading. If we don't find this pool, I'll become the very thing we fought to seal."
As they trekked through the purple - tinged landscape, Chen Jiuzhang's condition worsened. He accidentally blasted a boulder to dust with dark energy, then healed a scraped knee on Su Nian with blinding light—all without meaning to. The key's energy was a wild beast, and he was the struggling 驯兽师.
"Over there!" Zhang Chengying pointed to a valley filled with bioluminescent plants that glowed both white and black. At its center, a pool swirled with light and dark currents, held in balance by a ring of floating crystals.
But as they approached, Wu Laogou raised his staff. The ground trembled, and shadowy spikes erupted around the pool, trapping Chen Jiuzhang alone inside. "The Harmony Pool is a lie," the old man cackled, his form melting into shadow. "It's the primal darkness's feeding ground! And you, Chen Jiuzhang, are the sacrifice!"
The pool surged, forming a massive shadow hand that grabbed Chen Jiuzhang's ankle. He struggled, but the key's energy only made the darkness stronger. "You tricked us!" he shouted, as the shadow began pulling him under.
Su Nian slammed her chains against the shadow barrier, but they passed through. "Jiuzhang! Fight it!"
Luna and Lyra joined hands, summoning a combined beam of starlight and magic. It pierced the barrier, but the shadow hand only tightened its grip. Chen Jiuzhang looked at his friends, then at the key pulsating on his palm.
"I need to let go," he realized. "Not of the light or dark—but of the need to control them."
Closing his eyes, he stopped resisting. The shadow hand pulled him under, but instead of consuming him, the light and dark currents in the pool began to dance around him. He heard the primal darkness's voice not as a threat, but as a counterpart—like a yin to his yang.
When he opened his eyes, the pool had turned a peaceful purple, and the shadow hand was now a part of his own. He stood, balanced, between light and dark. Wu Laogou shrieked in anger, but Chen Jiuzhang merely raised his hand, and the shadow fragment was forced out of the old man's body, dissipating into nothing.
"The balance isn't a seal," he said, walking out of the pool. "It's a partnership."
But as the group celebrated, a new 裂缝 appeared in the sky, this one leaking not shadow, but a strange, silvery energy. The Gui Xu Secret Realm had a new guardian, but the universe's secrets were far from exhausted.
