Strange Paths to Immortality

Chapter 113: Chapter 114: Chamber of Memory Crystals

The spiral staircase wound deeper into the earth, its stone steps glowing with alternating bands of light and shadow. Chen Jiuzhang ran his hand along the wall, feeling the crystal key pulse in sync with the ancient masonry. "It's like the entire structure is alive," he murmured, the key's balanced energy thrumming through his veins.

Su Nian paused to examine a rune carved into the wall. "These look like the symbols on the Abyssal Keeper's staff—except they're glowing both gold and obsidian." Her As soon as his fingertips touched the rune, a fragment of memory suddenly flooded into his mind: the picture showed countless glowing crystals floating in the void, and a giant covered in stardust was using a scepter to seal darkness into the crystal.

"Look!" Lyra pointed ahead. The staircase ended in an archway of pulsating crystal, beyond which floated thousands of hexagonal prisms. Each crystal swirled with images—battles between light and dark, ancient civilizations rising and falling, and a massive 漩涡 at the center of it all.

"A memory repository," Luna whispered, stirring from her faint. Her starlight gown rekindled as she reached for a crystal labeled "Genesis". The moment her palm made contact, the chamber filled with a blinding flash.

They saw the Gui Xu Secret Realm born from the clash of two primal forces: a being of pure light and a shadowy entity. Their battle tore a hole in the fabric of reality, and the memory crystal showed the star - dusted giant sacrificing itself to create the realm as a containment field. "The balance isn't a natural state," Lyra realized, "it's a desperate measure to hold back the primal darkness."

As Chen Jiuzhang touched the key to a crystal marked "Guardians", images of his ancestors appeared. He saw Chen family members throughout history entering the realm, each holding a version of the crystal key. "My family... we weren't meant to restore balance, we were supposed to maintain the seal," he said, his voice shaking.

Unnoticed by the group, the shadow fragment that had slithered into the wall now clung to Zhang Chengying's shadow. It pulsed as he reached for a crystal labeled "Fall of the Ancients". The moment his fingers brushed the crystal, a vision of the primal darkness consuming entire galaxies flooded his mind. Fear flickered in his eyes, and the shadow fragment began to seep into his skin.

"Wait," Su Nian frowned, "if the realm is just a seal, then what happens when we 'restore balance'?"

Before anyone could answer, the crystals began to tremble. The central vortex image in the chamber's heart flared, and a voice echoed from the depths: "The seal weakens. Choose: maintain the lie of balance, or embrace the truth of chaos."

Chen Jiuzhang's key glowed so brightly it cast both light and shadow across his face. "There's a third way," he said, remembering Zhang Chengying's words. "What if balance means letting both forces exist—just not consume each other?"

But as he spoke, Zhang Chengying stumbled back, his eyes briefly flashing pitch black. "Maybe chaos is the natural order," he said, his voice slightly deeper than usual. "Why fight what's inevitable?"

The group froze, staring at their friend. The memory crystals swirled faster, projecting images of the realm dissolving into nothingness. The shadow fragment had found its host, and the battle for the Gui Xu Secret Realm was about to shift from external to internal.
