Strange Paths to Immortality

Chapter 107: Chapter 108: Into the Abyssal Keep

The group stood at the threshold of the ancient structure, its imposing entrance carved with strange symbols that seemed to shift and writhe in the dim light. Chen Jiuzhang tightened his grip on the crystal - key, which now pulsed with a steady, golden glow, as if it was both eager and wary of what lay inside. The air was thick with a sense of foreboding, and a faint, mournful melody echoed through the corridors, sending shivers down their spines."Stay on your guard," Chen Jiuzhang murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "We don't know what's waiting for us in there."Su Nian nodded, her newly repaired chains slung over her shoulder. "Let's just hope it's nothing worse than that Abyssal Keeper." But her words lacked conviction, and her eyes betrayed the nervousness she felt.As they stepped inside, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble. Torches along the walls flared to life, revealing a long, winding hallway lined with statues of hooded figures. Each statue held a staff similar to the one wielded by the Abyssal Keeper, and their empty eye sockets seemed to follow the group's every move.Suddenly, Lyra stopped short. "I can sense a powerful magic source up ahead," she said, her eyes closed in concentration. "But it's... different. It feels like a combination of both light and darkness, as if two opposing forces are trapped in a never - ending struggle."Just then, the statues began to stir. Their stone limbs creaked as they came to life, and they raised their staffs in unison. A wave of dark energy surged towards the group, forcing them to scatter. Zhang Chengying dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the blast, while Luna quickly summoned a shield of starlight to protect herself and the others."These things are everywhere!" Su Nian shouted, swinging her chains at one of the statues. The metal links wrapped around its neck, but instead of breaking, the statue merely shrugged off the attack and retaliated with a blast of energy from its staff.Chen Jiuzhang, realizing that brute force wasn't going to work, focused on the crystal - key. He could feel a connection between the key and the symbols on the walls. As he traced his finger along one of the symbols, the key emitted a bright flash of light, and the statue closest to him froze in place."Everyone, look for the symbols!" he called out. "The key can disable these statues if we find the right ones!"The group split up, searching the hallway for the mysterious symbols. Lyra, her knowledge of ancient magic giving her an edge, was the first to find one. With a wave of her hand, she activated the symbol, and another statue stopped its attack. But as they made their way deeper into the keep, the statues became more powerful, and the symbols grew harder to find.Just when it seemed like they were making progress, a deafening roar echoed through the keep. The ground shook violently, and a figure emerged from the shadows at the end of the hallway. It was larger than the Abyssal Keeper, its body covered in a strange, armor - like plating that glowed with an otherworldly purple light. In its hands, it held a massive sword, the blade crackling with dark energy."The Guardian of the Abyss," Lyra gasped, her face pale. "We're in serious trouble."The Guardian let out another roar and charged towards them, its massive footsteps shaking the very foundation of the keep. The group braced themselves for the fight of their lives, knowing that if they failed here, all hope of restoring balance to the Gui Xu Secret Realm would be lost.
