Chapter 9: Shadows of Avaris

The maze surrounding the third trial's island was a shifting labyrinth of traps, illusions, and hidden truths. As the Embarkers battled through the crystalline corridors, a sense of urgency drove them forward. The Writh, their objective, pulsed somewhere deep within the maze, its energy calling to them.

Pol's group, led with relentless determination, advanced toward the maze's glowing core. Alongside him, Nira, Lamin, and Sonia maneuvered through deadly puzzles and triggered traps, solving riddles under pressure and dodging falling debris. With each obstacle, Pol's focus only sharpened.

Kaiden, Mirae, and Sorin faced their own hellish path. Shadowy beings—twisted reflections of themselves—lashed out with uncanny precision. It was Mirae who first noticed the inscriptions on the dark stone walls. Between the combat and chaos, she found meaning etched into the crystalline maze.

"These aren't just designs," she whispered, tracing her hand over glowing runes. "They're records. History."

The wall depicted ethereal warriors with white, luminous eyes and ghostlike forms, standing against fire-bearing clans in apocalyptic battles. Mirae stepped back in awe. "This must be the EL Clan. And their true form... they're not ordinary beings. They're SoulSnatchers."

Kaiden turned sharply toward her. "SoulSnatchers?"

"Beings who control energy, memories, and souls themselves," she explained. "They don't just fight their enemies—they consume them. It's why they crave power. They want total dominance."

Sorin gritted his teeth. "Then we can't let them get the Writh. Not if it means giving that kind of power to monsters."

The Reunion

Both groups, bruised but unbroken, reunited at the center of the labyrinth. A pulsating glow bathed the chamber in light. Atop a pedestal floated the Writh—an orb of coalescing energy, shifting between hues of orange and gold. It felt ancient and alive.

The moment of triumph was short-lived.

From the swirling shadows behind the pedestal, a figure emerged. Tall and broad-shouldered, clad in jagged obsidian armor etched with runes, he radiated menace. A blackened blade hung at his side, humming with an aura of decay.

"So, you've made it," the man sneered.

Pol stepped forward instinctively, his hand bursting into flame. "Who are you?"

"Captain Darion Valros," the man replied, voice deep and mocking. "Fifty-first captain of the Order of Eclipsia's Grand Fleet. And you, child of the Flamingers, have trespassed far enough."

Weapons came up. Tension crackled in the air.

Valros continued with an unsettling calm. "You're brave, I'll grant you that. But you stand at the edge of a war that began long before your time. That Writh belongs to the Order. You will not leave here alive."

The Writh's Warning

As Valros drew his blade, the Writh glowed more intensely. A wave of energy struck Pol, pulling him into a vision.

He stood among his ancestors, fire-wielding warriors locked in battle against the EL Clan. He watched the Writh passed down through generations, always hidden, always protected. The voice of a long-dead guardian echoed in his mind:

"The Writh is not just power. It is legacy. Protect it... or all will be lost."

Pol gasped, snapping back to reality. Sweat beaded his forehead.

"Pol?" Nira asked, alarmed.

He steadied himself, eyes burning with resolve. "We're not backing down. This Writh doesn't belong to you or your clan. It's ours to protect."

Valros laughed coldly and unsheathed his weapon. "Then die with your legacy."

---

The Embarkers readied themselves. Kaiden drew his twin blades, Mirae summoned runes of defense, and Sorin formed a barrier around the group. Pol, flames swirling around him, took the front.

The Writh's glow intensified, a silent observer to what was to come.

The battle for Avaris had begun.
