Starting from Prototype to Immortality

Chapter 52: Chapter 53: Dead and Gone

Chapter 53: Dead and Gone

On the outskirts of Raccoon City, Umbrella's temporary base.

Gunfire rang out fiercely in the air!

"What's going on out there?"

Supervisor Cain pressed his earpiece in frustration as he heard the gunshots and screams outside the tent, demanding answers from his subordinates.

"Sir, a B.O.W. (Bio-Organic Weapon) has broken through the defensive line!"

The squad leader on the other end of the earpiece responded in panic.

It was understandable. The terrifying and grotesque appearance of B.O.W.s would unnerve anyone.

"Is it a Licker?"

Supervisor Cain's mind immediately jumped to the most plausible culprit capable of breaching their defenses—a Licker. The Nemesis was under their control and posed no threat, so it couldn't be the one attacking them.

"No, it's an unidentified B.O.W.!"

Before the squad leader could finish, his voice was cut off by a scream.

"Monster! Die! Bang, bang, bang! Stay back! Aaaah—!!"

The transmission ended abruptly, leaving behind only the horrifying sounds of chewing and the ripping of fibers.

Supervisor Cain's expression darkened. He quickly ordered his team to pack up the data and prepare for evacuation.

With the squad leader commanding from the rear now dead, it was evident that this base could not be held any longer.

Fortunately, they still had helicopters. Regardless of the type of B.O.W., none could reach the altitude of their aircraft.

"Get Nemesis over here immediately!"

Cain also instructed his subordinates to deploy Nemesis to provide backup. An unidentified B.O.W.? That meant a new mutation had emerged.

Lickers were deliberately cultivated through mutations, and considering the scale of an urban outbreak, there were likely hundreds or even thousands of them. However, a new variant was invaluable experimental data!

He had initially believed that all T-virus mutations had been thoroughly understood. Now it seemed they weren't as stable as assumed. Yet, these new variants might just elevate his status in the company.

Just as this thought crossed his mind, a Black Hawk helicopter plummeted from the sky and crashed right outside his tent. The massive shockwave from the crash sent Cain sprawling to the ground.

Looking up, he saw several creatures resembling Lickers yet distinctly different.

The T-Virus Hunters inherited the Lickers' gruesome, skinless appearance, but there were notable differences in their build and features.

"We're finished!"

Despair overwhelmed Supervisor Cain. He was still young, with a promising future in Umbrella Corporation. How could his life end here?

A female technician nearby was so frightened she wet herself. It was easy to mock the frailty and cold indifference of others when watching B.O.W. attacks through a screen. But when faced with death themselves, even those who prided themselves on being elites were no different.

Cain watched in horror as another Black Hawk helicopter was seized by several of the same monsters. They clung to the aircraft, forcing it to spin uncontrollably before it crashed into a wall and exploded.

To his shock, the creatures leapt unharmed from the wreckage, landing on the ground with a thud that left deep craters.

If not for the sight of the broken ground, Cain might have thought he was dreaming.

Then the T-Virus Hunters pounced on him and his team.

"NOOOO—!!"

---

"Shit! The T-virus can do that?"

The group was stunned by the revelation that the T-virus could resurrect long-dead corpses.

Alice took the opportunity to explain how the T-virus could reanimate dead cells, giving them new vitality.

While the others were astonished, Chang Wei remained silent, resisting the urge to question her explanation. After all, Alice's knowledge came from the Red Queen AI. She wasn't particularly educated in this area herself, so arguing with her would lead nowhere. If anything, it would only direct him back to Umbrella's Red Queen.

Jill and Peyton were both shocked that humanity had reached such a level of scientific achievement. They couldn't help but glance at Chang Wei.

Could it be that humanity's defiance of the Creator's domain had led God to send Chang Wei as punishment?

Chang Wei quickly dismissed their assumptions, insisting he knew nothing of divine plans. He was merely a trainee priest, uninformed about heavenly decrees.

"I'm part of the Vatican's Secret Division Thirteen—Betrayer Judas. Our job is to fight demons and devils for eternity. As for the Creator, who knows? Honestly, He's pretty petty. Judas betrayed Him, and He created an entire division just to humiliate him. And now we're stuck paying for it."

Jill and Alice exchanged uneasy glances. If they listened to him any longer, would they be dragged to hell as well?

"Alright, Dante, that's enough. Let's focus on getting to the gun shop," someone interrupted, eager to move on.

The group soon arrived at the gun shop without incident. The weapons available were mostly manufactured by Umbrella Corporation. Even the classic models featured ammunition with the company's logo engraved on the cartridge base.

Despite the grim situation, the group felt less tense. With Chang Wei, an unconventional priest, among them, his unique demeanor brought a strange sense of security.
