Chapter 52: Chapter 52 – I Was Just Joking With You
"Renya-kun, why do you look so distracted?"
A few days later, within the merchant caravan.
Koharu Utatane looked at Renya, who was sitting in the carriage dazed, with a puzzled expression.
Their mission this time was to escort the merchant caravan to the Land of Earth.
But along the way, Renya had been holding his weapon in silence, seemingly lost in thought.
At first, she didn't want to pry. After all, everyone has their own worries—no need to dig too deep.
But Renya was different. He was the core of their team. If something was off with him, it could lead to danger during the mission.
Shimura Danzō turned to glance at Renya. This was the first time he'd seen Renya like this.
He was curious—what could possibly make Renya so absentminded the whole journey?
Renya had been thinking about awakening his Sharingan. Upon hearing the question, he finally snapped out of it.
He turned his head toward the two curious faces and explained,
"I was wondering how to quickly evolve my single tomoe into a double tomoe… or even three tomoe…"
"Renya-kun, is it really that difficult for you Uchiha to awaken your Sharingan?" Koharu asked.
Hearing that, Danzō instinctively frowned and looked at Koharu with displeasure.
To him, her question was rather inappropriate. Asking about another clan's eye awakening method? That was basically spy behavior.
Thankfully, Renya was their teammate. If it were another Uchiha, they might've arrested this foolish woman and interrogated her on the spot.
After all, awakening the Sharingan was a top secret of the Uchiha clan!
Renya didn't seem to mind. As far as he was concerned, the Uchiha's method of awakening their Sharingan wasn't exactly a secret—not something worth hiding.
"It is rather difficult..."
Danzō was a bit surprised. He hadn't expected Renya to answer such a sensitive topic and immediately perked up.
This was a rare opportunity to understand the Uchiha.
"The Sharingan evolves through intense emotional stimulation, combined with sufficient chakra. Then, the evolution happens naturally."
It sounded simple, but in practice, it was anything but.
Among the Uchiha, most members stopped at the double tomoe stage. Those who could awaken three tomoe were rare.
Because 'intense emotion' was an abstract concept.
Some members had such strong mental endurance that ordinary emotions couldn't trigger their eye evolution. Only witnessing a loved one die before their eyes might trigger the transformation.
So for the Uchiha, having too much emotional resilience wasn't necessarily a good thing.
For Renya, evolving his eyes was even harder.
He was a transmigrator, and had always felt a certain detachment from this world. He couldn't fully integrate or form deep emotional bonds quickly.
This very detachment was a source of frustration for him.
Ordinary emotions hardly stirred him. Unless... he witnessed the death of a comrade or a close friend, it was unlikely his Sharingan would evolve.
Of course, it wasn't just anger—intense emotions like happiness, excitement, or fear could also do the trick.
A life-and-death crisis could also trigger the evolution.
"So that's how it works—the Sharingan needs intense emotion to evolve?" Koharu murmured with sudden understanding.
Danzō was stunned and muttered, "It only takes emotion?"
He had assumed the Sharingan's evolution was extremely complex. Who knew it only took strong emotions?
That made him a little jealous.
Damn it. It was so much easier for those from powerful clans to grow stronger...
For those from small clans without powerful kekkei genkai, the only way to become strong was through endless hard work and training.
After all that exhausting effort just to grow stronger, only to see some Uchiha awaken their Sharingan in a burst of anger and instantly surpass you—it felt like the sky was collapsing!
Renya had no idea what Danzō was thinking, or he would've definitely refuted him.
The Sharingan awakening wasn't that easy!
Renya ran his fingers along the blade, gazing thoughtfully at the two.
"What do you think... if you died in front of me, would I awaken my Sharingan?"
The two of them instantly widened their eyes, faces filled with disbelief.
Was this guy... so desperate to awaken his Sharingan that he'd lost his mind?!
"Re-Renya-kun, don't say things like that." Koharu swallowed nervously.
"Haha, Renya, you don't have to joke around with us like that." Danzō forced a couple of dry laughs.
Renya's idea was too dangerous—they had to make sure he dropped it.
Otherwise, they were genuinely afraid he'd either stage an act during a mission or just stand by and watch them die… all for the sake of awakening his Sharingan.
At that moment, they finally understood what Tobirama-sensei meant back then.
[The Uchiha clan is emotionally unstable and prone to extremes.]
Renya looked quietly at the two, his voice cold.
"I wasn't joking."
As he spoke, he placed his hand on the hilt of his blade. With a metallic hum, the blade slid out more than three inches from the sheath.
Koharu and Danzō's eyes bulged with terror.
Holy crap—this was worse than selling out your teammates. He was about to actually attack them?!
"Renya, calm down!"
"Even if you kill us, it might not awaken your Sharingan!"
They hadn't expected Renya to really consider attacking them.
Seeing the crimson glow of his eyes and the cold, indifferent expression, cold sweat broke out all over their bodies.
If it came to a fight, they knew they weren't Renya's match.
Alarms blared in both their minds.
We're going to die—we're really going to die!
The fear was so overwhelming their legs went weak, and they even forgot to run.
Looking at their pale faces, Renya smiled slightly, then sheathed his sword with a click.
"Tch. Don't be so nervous—I was just joking with you."
Hearing that, the corners of their mouths twitched.
If they weren't so much weaker than Renya, they would've beaten the crap out of this bastard!
Damn it—that joke wasn't funny at all.
They'd nearly wet themselves just now.
"Renya-kun, you really are... that scared the hell out of me!" Koharu punched Renya lightly in the chest, half angry, half embarrassed.
"Haha, sorry about that," Renya said, scratching his head with a grin.
Danzō stared at Renya with a complicated expression. He couldn't shake the feeling that Renya hadn't been joking earlier.
In that moment, Renya really seemed like he was going to strike.
That overwhelming killing intent couldn't have been faked...
"Tobirama-sensei was right. The Uchiha clan really is crazy!"
No wonder the sensei had always warned them about the Uchiha. After what just happened, who'd dare let an Uchiha go unchecked?
At that moment, he fully understood his teacher's intentions.
Thinking that, Danzō instinctively put more distance between himself and Renya.
If Renya ever showed signs of that behavior again, he was out of there.
Renya's behavior had made him truly fear the Uchiha.
Unstable elements like this should be dealt with early—before they hurt anyone else!
"Danzō, don't be so nervous. I really was just joking with you two," Renya said, a little helpless as he noticed Danzō edging away.
The road had been boring, so he'd thought he'd liven things up with a joke—he didn't expect it would scare them so badly.
Danzō didn't reply, and stepped even further away.
Seeing this, Renya didn't know what else to say.
As for whether or not it really was a joke...
Perhaps only he knew the truth.
