Starshine Chronicles: The Exiled Heir

Chapter 6: Arrival at the City of Zephyros (Chapter-6)

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm amber glow over the towering walls of Zephyros—the famed City of Whispers. Known across the realm for its intricate network of traders, adventurers, and mercenaries, Zephyros was a melting pot of culture, mystery, and opportunity. Its skyline was dotted with spires and domes, each reflecting the fading light of day. The air buzzed with energy, as if the city itself was alive.

Denver stared in awe as they approached the massive gates guarded by armored sentinels. The gates themselves were a work of art, adorned with carvings of mythical creatures and runes glowing faintly with magic.

"Impressive, isn't it?" Lena said, smirking at Denver's wide-eyed expression. Luna trotted beside her, the spirit wolf's glowing form catching the attention of passersby. "Welcome to Zephyros. A place where fortunes are made... or lost."

Astrael perched on Denver's shoulder, its static energy crackling softly. "Do you think they'll be weirded out by a lightning dragon hatchling and a wind spirit wolf?" Denver asked, glancing nervously at the crowd gathering near the gates.

Lena chuckled. "Here? Unlikely. Zephyros attracts all kinds. Just don't do anything to draw unnecessary attention. The last thing we need is trouble."

As they stepped through the gates, the city's chaos enveloped them. Merchants shouted over each other, advertising exotic goods from faraway lands. Street performers dazzled onlookers with feats of magic and acrobatics. The aroma of spiced meats and freshly baked bread wafted through the air, mingling with the scent of leather and metal from the bustling blacksmith shops.

"Stick close," Lena said, her tone firm. "This place may seem welcoming, but it can be unforgiving to the unprepared."

Denver nodded, his eyes darting from stall to stall. His curiosity got the better of him as he approached a merchant displaying an array of enchanted trinkets. "How much for this?" he asked, picking up a small amulet etched with swirling patterns.

The merchant, a grizzled man with a twinkle in his eye, leaned forward. "Ah, young adventurer! That there is the Amulet of Zephyr. Perfect for someone with an affinity for wind magic. Just 200 silvers."

"200?" Denver exclaimed, placing the amulet back carefully. "That's more than we've got combined!"

Lena pulled him away with a sigh. "Rule number one: don't show how desperate you are. They'll take advantage of that in a heartbeat."

They made their way to the Adventurer's Guild, a sprawling building at the center of the city. Its grand entrance was flanked by statues of legendary warriors, and its banner—a sword crossed with a staff—fluttered in the evening breeze.

Inside, the guild was a hive of activity. Adventurers of all ranks gathered around large quest boards, discussing missions and forming parties. A burly man behind the counter greeted them. "New arrivals, eh? Welcome to the Zephyros Adventurer's Guild. Looking to register or just passing through?"

"Register," Lena said firmly. "We'll need access to quests and resources if we're going to survive here."

As they filled out the necessary paperwork, Denver couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. This city was unlike anything he'd experienced before—a place of endless possibilities, but also countless dangers.

Their registration complete, the guild master handed them their official badges. "Congratulations. You're now recognized adventurers of Zephyros. But a word of advice—this city isn't for the faint of heart. Watch your backs."

Lena nodded, her expression serious. "We'll keep that in mind."

As they stepped out of the guild, the city's lights sparkled like a sea of stars. Denver glanced at Lena, a newfound determination in his eyes. "This place is incredible. I think we're going to find more than just fortune here."

Lena smiled faintly. "Let's hope we find what we're looking for—and not something that'll get us killed."

With Luna and Astrael by their sides, they set off into the bustling streets of Zephyros, ready to face whatever challenges—and opportunities—the city had in store.

Denver and Lena navigated the winding streets of Zephyros, eventually arriving at a modest shop tucked away in a quieter corner of the bustling marketplace. A wooden sign creaked above the entrance, reading "Fletcher's Emporium—Buy, Sell, Trade."

The bell above the door jingled as they entered. The interior of the shop was cluttered but organized, with shelves lined with potions, trinkets, and magical oddities. Behind the counter stood a wiry man with sharp eyes and an even sharper grin. "Welcome, travelers! Fletcher's the name. What can I do for you?"

Lena placed the loot they had gathered on the counter: goblin daggers, chunks of monster hide, a few shattered pieces of the Orc Chieftain's armor, and the treasure from the dungeon. "Looking to sell," she said curtly.

Fletcher's eyes gleamed as he examined the items, picking up a goblin dagger and turning it over in his hands. "Good craftsmanship, considering the source.

the sacks weighed down by the spoils of their recent battles. The counter groaned under the weight of 25 goblin daggers, 10 hobgoblin hide pieces, and fragments of the Orc Chieftain's armor. Fletcher's sharp eyes gleamed with excitement as he inspected the haul.

"These daggers are in decent shape—10 silvers apiece. Hobgoblin hides, excellent quality, those are 30 silvers each. And the chieftain's armor fragments? Rare material, worth 150 silvers," Fletcher said, tallying the total. Denver and Lena watched as the merchant counted their earnings.

When the negotiation was done, Fletcher handed over the coins, which shimmered in the light: 250 silvers from goblin daggers, 300 silvers from hobgoblin hides, and 150 silvers from the Orc Chieftain's armor fragments, totaling 700 silvers.

"How do you want it?" Fletcher asked, motioning to a coin exchange device behind the counter. "I can split this into denominations."

"That'd be helpful," Lena said.

Fletcher carefully distributed the coins into different pouches, explaining as he worked.

Bronze coins: The most common and smallest denomination, good for cheap supplies and minor expenses.

Silver coins: A mid-tier currency, widely accepted and useful for moderate purchases.

Gold coins: High-value currency, often used for significant transactions or rare items.

Platinum coins: Rare and exceedingly valuable, typically reserved for the wealthiest traders and high-stakes deals.

Fletcher then gestured to his coin exchange counter. "I can convert this into higher denominations if you'd like."

"Yes, please," Lena replied.

Fletcher began the process of converting the silvers based on the currency system:

1000 bronze = 1 silver

1000 silver = 1 gold

1000 gold = 1 platinum

After careful calculations, he split their earnings into:

700,000 bronze coins, which converted to 700 silvers. Since they didn't reach 1000 silvers, there was no further conversion into gold or platinum.

Lena leaned forward. "We want to keep 500 silvers as-is and convert the remaining 200 into bronze coins."

Fletcher nodded, heading to the coin exchange counter. "Easy enough." With steady hands, he counted out 200 silvers and began the conversion. Given the currency system (1 silver = 1,000 bronze coins), Fletcher handed them a pouch containing 200,000 bronze coins, alongside their 500 silver coins in another pouch.

"Here you go," he said, sliding the bags across the counter. "Spend wisely, travelers. In a city like Zephyros, coins have a way of vanishing quicker than you'd think."

Denver picked up the heavy pouch of bronze coins. "This is going to be... fun to carry around."

Lena smirked. "Better get used to it. It's part of the adventurer's life."

With their earnings sorted, they stepped back into the bustling streets. Lena considered their options. "We should hit the armory and potion shop first. Better gear and supplies will make the next fight easier."

"Agreed," Denver replied. "And with some bronze coins to spare, we can also stock up on smaller essentials. Let's see what this city has to offer."

After leaving Fletcher's Emporium with their earnings—500 silvers and 200,000 bronze coins neatly packed into separate pouches—Denver and Lena found a quiet spot in a shaded alley to divide the money.

Lena placed the two pouches on the ground. "Alright, let's split this up fairly. We earned it together."

Denver nodded, crouching beside her. "Makes sense. How do you want to divide it?"

"We'll split the silvers evenly—250 silvers each," Lena said, carefully counting out the coins and handing Denver his share. "As for the bronze coins, let's split it 50-50 as well, so we each get 100,000 bronze."

"That's fair," Denver agreed, tying his share of bronze coins into his own pouch. "Though carrying all this bronze feels like hauling rocks. But hey, it's a good problem to have."

Astrael perched on Denver's shoulder, flickering with faint sparks of electricity as if intrigued by the process. Luna sat beside Lena, her glowing eyes watching the proceedings closely, her tail flicking in the breeze.

With the coins distributed, Lena tightened the drawstrings on her pouch. "This city isn't cheap, and we'll need every coin for gear, potions, and maybe even some intel. Let's make sure we use this wisely."

Denver stood, slinging his bag of coins over his shoulder. "Agreed. And hey, if we play our cards right, we might even be able to save some for upgrades down the line."

They shared a nod, a newfound sense of camaraderie between them. Together, they ventured back into the bustling streets of Zephyros, their spirits high and their pockets full, ready to take on whatever challenges this city of wonders had to offer.
